+ | Pocket Monsters Stadium FAQ:
|
Q: What is this game? |
- | A: Because the restrictions in running this game involve only using rental Pokemon (as otherwise it would be incredibly easy and not at all challenging) Generally speaking, worse stat Pokemon have better moves, it's about finding the right combinations. So in a lot of cases you will see me use for example, Kadabra (Has Psychic/Thunder Punch), but never Alakazam (Has Psybeam/Theif)
+ | A: Pocket Monsters Stadium, which was only released in Japan (alternatively referred to as Pokemon Stadium 0). It was the first Stadium game, and was built kinda as a prototype, to hold battles for the competitive formats at the time.
It only has 2 modes, Nintendo Cup '97 (Poke Cup, lvls 50-55) and Nintendo Cup '98 (Lvl 30 only). The selection of Pokemon also made it so only Pokemon that are competitively viable (i.e. fully evolved Pokes) are available, as they are the only ones in the game at this point. Also Pikachu, lol. Some fully evolved Pokemon are excluded also, as they evolve after level 30, which was the max level in the main Cup in this game. However Dragonite, the Starters, and Legendary birds still feature. |
- | Q: What is this category?
+ | '97 only has 1 cup, and '98 has 4, making 5 in total.
- | A: This is the Gym Leader Castle, specifically Round 1. So basically beat everyone in there. They can be done in any order (so long as Red is last), so I start with some of the better fights to get out of the way early. (GLC R1 stands for Gym Leader Castle, Round 1)
+ |
Q: What is this run? |
- | Q: Why is the order scrambled like that?
+ | A: Well, the speedcategories are basically "Do all 5 cups", "Do all 4 '98 cups" and "Do the '97 cup" (With each individual '98 cup being a misc category). So the category I'm 'trying' to do is doing all of the cups, but I'll switch around what I start with to try and get good individual cups as well whilst optimising the full run.
- | A: It's allowed because doing it from a fresh file would be really annoying to reset the save data for (given you'd have to remake the teams every reset as well), so it's stupid to not allow play on a completed save. And since that's allowed, no reason to restrict order either. Red still must be done last because timing ends during the cutscene after his battle (would be slower to not do him last because of that anyway).
+ | I'm currently leading with Great Ball '98, as it's the only single cup record I don't have atm.
|
- | I fight Brock first because getting a 3 turn fight on him saves a bunch of time, but relies on him picking a team without Pinsir/Forretress, and resetting for a specific team is not something you want to do during the run. Jasmine is second because I use Horn Drill on her a bunch (it's actually the most consistent way to get a reasonably fast fight, though not entirely consistent at all), then head off to the more difficult fights (E4, rest of Kanto, then backwards through Johto so that Falkner is second last before Red) | (I used to do Misty 1st/2nd and try to manipulate a fast fight on her, but she's too bs for that, so I fight her after E4 now and accept a more consistent fight)

A: The restrictions in running this game involve only using rental Pokemon (as otherwise it would be incredibly easy and not at all challenging). |
- | Q: Why does that gym leader have a Pokemon that isn't of their type??
+ | For '97, you mainly use electric Pokemon (Zapdos/Jolteon/Electrode) and Golem for their electrics. Alakazam and Tauros also occasionally feature as they matchup a little better on some fights.
- | A: Because if every leader had only their type, all these fights would be easy. It's not like in the games where you only have a small team, since you have access to every Pokemon, they need coverage in order to be a challenge at all.
+ | For '98, a more well rounded team is used with pretty obvious purpose.
|
- | Q: Can you manipulate the Pokemon the trainers use by using other Pokemon? Does it effect it at all?
+ | Q: Anything else unique about this run?
- | A: Yes and no. The team of 6 Pokemon that you show -does- impact the Pokemon the trainer you fight use. However, it is both A) Never completely reliable, as they can always choose multiple teams, and B) Not as simple as you might think. For example, just having a team full of Fire types does not mean Misty won't choose Sunflora. They act differently seeing different Pokemon, but not in any coherent way. For example, one of my newer strats is to swap out Hitmonlee on my team against Erika for a Haunter, that I never use. This changes Erika from leading Bellosom/Tangela 99% of the time, to leading Venusaur/Jumpluff 99% of the time. To find good combinations is just a lot of trial and error. But most of the team, your focus is simply on being able to pick a team of 3 that can always win, very rarely do you have to space to try and manipulate like that anyway (but sometimes it's a tradeoff between the two)
+ | A: Yeah so '98 with it's 4 cups actually has the exact same Pokemon as the opponents all the way through (albeit with different moves/stats, and also levels for the first 4 fights).
However '97 has more variance even though it's only one cup. You do 8 fights, but the 8 trainers you battle are randomised from a pool of 15 trainers, so the order and which fights you even do are up to chance. |

+ | Q: Can you manipulate the Pokemon the trainers use by using other Pokemon?
A: I don't know with this game tbh. I get very similar fights a lot of the time, but they can always choose more than 1 team, so it's still not true manip. |

- | A: Sub 2:15 would be nice.

- | Q: What does "Round 2" or "Round 1" mean in this game?
+ |
- | A: This game repeats itself over, after you beat Round 1 of the game you unlock Round 2. Round 2 gives the opponent different pokes, with different moves, and better stats. It is in general, much much harder.
+ |
A: For the full game run, I want a deathless run, which would be around 2:30. For Great Ball, just the record.
