2 | ||
3 | Q: What is Manipless? | |
4 | A: Manipless is, as the name implies, not using manip. So beating the game with no RNG Manipulation. It's also a glitchless run.
5 | ||
6 | Q: How much changes in a Manipless run?
7 | - | A: A lot! Because you can't get an early Master Ball to use on a (manipped) Raikou, the route changes a fair bit. There's a number of routes available actually. Those are: |
7 | + | A: A lot! Because you can't manipulate really good stats, just picking a starter and going with it is very risky - especially in a race. Along with the fact you can't manipulate Pokerus and wild held items to assist you (the Metronome and Lucky Egg), it means there are a number of different viable routes to use. |

9 | - | Solo Typhoslion, but catch Mewtwo for Red (my PB from 2013 did this) |
9 | + | Q: What routes are there? |
10 | - | Solo Typholsion |
10 | + | A: So currently there are 5 different "ideas" of good routes. They are: |
11 | - | Quilava, then catch L50 Magikarp and Gyarados |
11 | + | |
12 | - | Quilava, then Kenya for Whitney/Morty, then catch L50 Magikarp for Gyarados (what I will do in these runs) |
12 | + | Empoleon |
13 | - | Quilava, then catch Raikou with a Fast Ball (~1.5% chance to work. But would still be the best strat if it worked, but super unlikely, and only faster by a small amount) |
13 | + | Infernape |
14 | Staraptor | |
15 | - | Q: Any other change aside from the Pokemon you use? |
15 | + | Kazza |
16 | - | A: Well, yeah. Because there's no RNG manip, Cyndaquil's stats are random. Which means all of the early fights are different each run. Kenya always has the same stats, however. |
16 | + | Monferno -> Bibarel |
17 | - | There's no Voltorb Flip too, which means no Abra, or Dratini. As such, I also catch a Sentret early game for Surf/Whirlpool (Surf also goes to Gyarados, but I need to get on the water first to catch it) |
17 | + | |
18 | Currently the record is over 4 hours, and I think all of these routes are capable of getting under 4 hours. So all of them are currently capable of getting the record.
19 | ||
20 | You may also see some people do some other cool routes in these races that are definitely slower but still pretty good, such as using Gliscor.
21 | ||
22 | - | A: No, I'm playing on a 3DS with a capture board installed allowing me to record game footage. Usually I use a DS, but because there is not resetting here, a 3DS works the same for run, and has the circle pad, which is useful for catching Magikarp. |
22 | + | Q: What route will you be doing? |
23 | A: I have not yet decided and will be making the route up as I go. I've also never run manipless before, as the first time I ran this game was after RNG Manip was used.
24 | - | Q: Why do you choose Cyndaquil? |
24 | + | |
25 | - | A: Because the Cyndaquil evolution family is the best for start of the speedrun. |
25 | + | |
26 | ||
27 | - | Q: Why not Soul Silver? |
27 | + | |
28 | - | A: Heart Gold and Soul Silver are the same for one key difference, the legendary Pokemon you must visit. Visiting Ho-Oh and Lugia take almost the exact same amount of time, but Lugia is faster by like ~2 seconds assuming you have good movement. However in this run, you need Max Revives, and the Max Revive at Bell Tower is faster to pick up. |
28 | + | A: No, I'm playing on a 3DS with a capture board installed allowing me to record game footage. Usually I use a DS, but for races I prefer using a 3DS because my capture board captures audio as well, and given it's manipless there's no downside to using the 3DS. |
29 | - | Additionally, because I'm not going to be using a manipped Raikou, it's possible that I will be slower than the Ho-Oh/Lugia, which means there is a chance I won't be able to run away. As such, visiting Ho-Oh is preferred, as it has lower speed, meaning there's more chance I will be able to run away first turn. |

30 | Q: Why do you play as the girl?
31 | A: The counterpart talks less if they are the boy.
32 | - | A: The counterpart does the catching tutorial, and the male does it faster, so it’s faster to choose the female for yourself. |

33 | - | See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI1-PJ7Sy1w |
33 | + | Q: Why do you name yourself 'I'? |
34 | A: Because it's faster to name them one character for text purposes, and the letter 'I' gives a nice spin as if the game was self-narrating
35 | - | Q: Why do you name yourself and Cyndaquil 'I'? |
35 | + | |
36 | Q: What is WR? | |
37 | A: https://www.speedrun.com/pkmnplatext#Manipless
38 | - | Q: Do you catch anything else? Mewtwo maybe? |
38 | + | |
39 | - | A: I catch a Sentret (for Surf/Whirlpool), and obtain Kenya (for Fly), and Snorlax (for Rock Climb, and Red). |
39 | + | |
40 | A: To win the race. Ideally I'd like a sub 4:00 at some point, but I'm not planning on grinding this category out, much prefer doing the races. |
