Assorted Nethack Tips for Nethack-Newfags:
2
3
1a. AC - Armour class. Starts at 10(naked) and goes to -40 to -50 for end-game players. The lower you have, the greater damage reduction after damage roll you take on a separate die/dice that DOES contain 0's. (meaning lowers the chance of getting hit high)
4
5
1b. B/U/C - Stands for Blessed/Uncursed/Cursed. One way to find out if an item's cursed is to wear it/use it. If you can't take it off/acts irregular (wands aim in different directions, scroll does opposite to it's intended action), it's cursed.
6
7
1c. St = Strength. Determines damage and how much you can carry unburdened. Ranges from 8-18, to 18/00- 18/**. and up to 25.
8
Dx = Dexterity. Used for calculating chance to hit. ranges from 3(-3 to hit) to 25(+11)
9
Co = Constitution. Used for regen, calculating bonus to hp upon leveling and plays a part with how much weight you can carry too.
10
In = Intelligence. Used for learning spells from spell books (unless you're a healer, valkyrie, knight, priest or monk, then its rolled from wisdom).
11
Wi = Wisdom. Determines power regen and used for learning spells from spell books with certain classes (see above)
12
Ch = Charisma. Used only for getting better prices at shops. Females always start with +1-2 bonus over men.
13
14
1. The most important tip: NEVER, EVER wear an unidentified amulet.
15
16
1i. NEVER, EVER read an unidentified scroll unless it sells for $17-23 in a shop.
17
18
2. Scrolls of ID sell for 17-23$ in a shop. Always.
19
20
3. Never eat kobold corpses as a new player.
21
22
4. Never polymorph at level 1.
23
24
5. Always start as a female.
25
26
6. Always start as a Dwarf. If not possible (depending on class), go elf>human>orc
27
28
7. Food rations give you 800 'turns' of movement, tins give you -50 to 100 (to memory, depending on content), lichen corpses give 300.
29
30
8. lichen corpses never rot or go off and are really, really light. Lichens will drop corpses %50 of the time, however.
31
32
9. Don't fuck a foocubi at level 1. (yes, you can do that.)
33
34
10. If you have more than 0 AC and you see ants, FUCKING RUN!
35
36
11. you can tame cavernous animals with a tripe ration (don't eat that man)
37
38
12. If a lamp buys for $60-ish, buy it. That shit's magic, yo. save for altar B/U/C (blessed/uncursed/cursed) status identification. (see tip 16.)
39
40
13. #rub a magic lamp to summon a djinn. Only works once per magic lamp then it turns into a regular one
41
42
13. Never #rub a cursed or uncursed lamp.
43
44
14. Save your lamps until you're of decent strength or defence.
45
46
15. Magic lamps also work as an unlimited supply of light.
47
48
16. Dropping an item on an altar(regardless of alignment) when not blind will give it's B/U/C status. (Black flash = cursed, No flash = Uncursed, Amber Flash = Blessed)
49
50
17. Don't B/U/C altar identify while hallucinating.
51
52
18. Never kick an altar. Never kick a sink (as a new character).
53
54
18. You're first wish will be for 'blessed +5 gray dragon scale mail' (yes, must be spelt 'gray' or you'll get nothing) (magic resistance) or for wizards, 'blessed +5 silver dragon scale mail' (reflection). Your second wish will be for a 'blessed greased bag of holding'.
55
56
19. #offer a freshly killed corpse in your inventory(within 50-75 turns) to appease your merciful god. Repeat donators will gain gifts in the form of artefacts (unique named weapons.)
57
58
20. Never drink from a fountain when starting off.
59
60
21. If the game asks you for conformation when attacking something, you probably shouldn't hurt it.
61
62
22. Keep your pet with you for as long as possible when starting. If it's standing next to you when going down stairs, it will follow you down a level.
63
64
23. If you have access to a pick axe or a spell book of force bolt (100% starting item for wizards), destroy every statue you see, it may contain a random spell book.
65
66
24. Eating certain items can give you permanent or temporary intrinsic properties.
67
68
25. Eating a floating eye corpse gives you telepathy.
69
70
26. Eating a newt corpse at full power (Pw) gives you a 1/3 chance of increasing your max Pw by 1.
71
72
27. Quaffing potions of healing, extra healing or full healing at full hp will increase your maximum hp by 1-3, 2-5 and 4-9 respectivly.
73
74
28. Attempting to wish for more wishes (by any means) doesn't work and you'll lose your wish. Wishing for tons of money doesn't work either (max you can wish for that works %100 of the time is 4999 gold, which is not a lot. After that you're chance of success goes down at a pretty fast rate to about 6500-7000 for %0.)
75
76
29. Canned food has all the same properties as a fresh corpse.
77
78
30. For all foods: USE YOUR BRAIN, NOT YOUR STOMACH! If you wouldn't eat it in real life because it would kill you, don't eat it in game because it will hurt/kill you there too.
79
80
30. Never hit a cockatrice or chickatrice corpse without proper hand protection. Never eat it either. (You can, however, wield it for 300-400 turns and be able to 1-hit everything if you are wearing gloves before it rots completely)
81
82
31. If you're getting stoned by a cock/chickatrice, eat a lizard corpse. Lizard corpses never rot either and are very light, but give very little nutrition (50 turns).
83
84
32. Never #pray unless you have worded conformation that your god is happy with you except if you're about to die, it's worth having a shot anyway.
85
86
33. for the torso, you can wear shirt + armour + cloak. Shirts are rare and have no extrinsic properties, so disregard until mid-game for AC stacking.
87
88
34. Don't bother with sokoban (blue dungeon walls for graphical interface) unless starving. Come back when you're ready to hit the castle (dungeon level: 22-25)
89
90
35. Brown puddings will rot your leather armour. Black puddings will corrode your weapons and iron armour.
91
92
36. Never wear or use crystal armour. It's shit, breaks easy, heavy and the AC is bested by dragon armour anyway.
93
94
37. Rocks make good starter ammo. Get in the habit of using them. When in a bit of trouble, start throwing to weaken your enemies. Move onto darts ASAP.
95
96
38. On that note, always carry some ranged weapon regardless of class.
97
98
39. Never pick up grey rocks until you've kicked them. If they move, then it's okay for picking up. If it goes 'THUMP!' Don't touch it, it's a lodestone and will fuck up your day.
99
100
40. Kicking a door down will wake all sleeping monsters on that level. Although sometimes it's unavoidable.
101
102
41. Identify Scrolls > Tools > Helms and Gloves > Gems > Food > Armour > Weapons.
103
104
42. Aggressive play styles will get you killed very fast. Only kill when absolutely needed to stay alive. (Always kill lichen though)
105
106
43. Save your wands of digging until later on in the game.
107
108
44. Books, scrolls, armour and potions will be ruined by water. No swimming outside or inside the yellow flags.
109
110
45. Bag all semi-useful wands and potions. If you get hit by lighting, your wands will explode. If you get hit by a fire or ice bolt, your potions will freeze/explode. If it's the latter, you may experience their effects.
111
112
43. You will die. Accept and start again. Learn what killed you and never do it again. It's about..%90 of the learning curve in this game.
113
114
For everything else: The game is very....logical. No matter how smart you think you are, the mods have already thought of it before you. This can be used to your advantage, however.
115
116
This should be enough tips to get beginner players off to a better start. Don't forget this is just off the top of my head. There are hundreds more things out there that may kill/greatly inconvenience you that I've forgotten. Sorry!

Additional info:
123
124
I would like to add that in this part:
125
>1b. B/U/C - Stands for Blessed/Uncursed/Cursed. One way to find out if an item's cursed is to wear it/use it. If you can't take it off/acts irregular (wands aim in different directions, scroll does opposite to it's intended action), it's cursed.
126
Maybe you (or I, whatever) should add the pet trick [or is this too much spoiler?]: Pets detect curses. If you have a pet you can drop an item to the floor (not food or you risk the pet eating it!) and make the pet step in it. If it does so relluctantly, the item is cursed.
127
Another way of auto-detecting curses is playing a priest.
128
129
>you can tame cavernous animals with atripe ration (don't eat that man)
130
But orcs can eat them just fine, "Mmm, tripe! Not bad! Also, the tripe-taming trick only works for dogs/cats, not for the other d's and f's e.g. jackals and tigers and that jazz.
131
>You're first wish will be for 'blessed +5 gray dragon scale mail'
132
+5? Nigga that's crazy for a first wish. +2 is nearly 100% chance and if you're feeling ballsy, you should go for +3. +5 is definitely too much; there's too big of a chance of no bonus AC at all. Although for a new character a dragon scale mail's base AC is usually more than enough.
133
>Canned food has all the same properties as a fresh corpse
134
Tins also remove the poison from poisonous corpses, so you can even eat kobold meat if it's tinned.
135
>Don't bother with sokoban
136
Nigga it's a great place to gain experience and it has a guaranteed BoH or an AoR which are both pretty damn useful, even for a early game character.
137
>Bag all semi-useful wands and potions
138
ONLY IF YOU'VE IDENTIFIED THEM FIRST.
139
You really don't want to throw un-ID'd wands into your BoH, the result mind-BLOWING, if you know what I mean.
