HG/SS All In Game Trades FAQ (Manipless)
2
3
Q: What is this run?
4-
A: This run is to win a Master Rank Contest, in any of the 5 categories (NOT all 5)
4+
A: This run is to complete all 10 In Game Trades in HG/SS. No Glitches are allowed in this category.
5
6
Q: Why are you doing this run?
7-
A: Mostly because it's one of the 10 bounties that Sakharu put up in the DS Speedrunning Discord recently. The bounty was for manipless runs of this category, so that's why I'm running manipless.
7+
A: Mostly because it's one of the 10 bounties that Sakharu put up in the DS Speedrunning Discord recently. This is a manipless run (I might do the manipped version later since both have a bounty, the route is quite different since it'd use Raikou)

9
More information about those bounties here: https://pastebin.com/UR1pC7Hj
10
11
Q: Do you plan on doing any of the other bounties?
12
A: Yes, but given the timeline ends on July 1st, I won't get a chance to do all of them. But I'd like to try a couple.

16-
Q: What do you have to do to win a Master Rank contest??
16+
Q: What are the 10 in game trades? Where do you do them? Anything you need to trigger them?
17-
A: To enter in the Master Rank, you have to win all the ranks below. So once you reach the Contest Hall in Hearthome, you have to win a Normal Rank, Great Rank, Ultra Rank, and finally a Master Rank contest - all the the same category (Cool/Beauty/Cute/Smart/Tough)
17+
A: They are as follows:
18
1) Bellsprout for Onix (Rocky) | Violet City
19
2) Drowzee for Machop (Muscle) | Goldenrod Dept Store
20-
A: There are two different routes you can do.
20+
3) Krabby for Voltorb (Billy) | Olivine City
21-
The more reasonable route (that WR does, and I'm doing for this run), plays a manipless run up to Veilstone (minus catching a flier, plus getting Poffin Case). At Veilstone Dept Store, you can buy Level 32 Poffins for 6400 each, and by getting a bunch of Vitamins to sell for money, you can buy a whole lot of them to increase the condition of the Pokemon you enter (Monferno), giving you enough to somewhat comfortably win while playing reasonably well.
21+
4) Anything for Steelix (Rusty) | Olivine City | Requires Jasmine's Phone Number (Obtained at the Olivine Cafe from 1pm - 2pm)
22
5) Female Dragonair for Dodrio (Doris) | Blackthorn City
23-
The far more luck dependant route (that I was doing), plays mostly the same as a manipless run, but only to Hearthome. It saves about 19 minutes by not playing up to Veilstone, but tries to win the Contests without raising the condition of Monferno to get any hearts for the Master Rank contest. To compensate for this - you have to get a few more accessories in Floraroma and the Flag after Cycling Road to try and get a couple of hearts from them (ideally you get 3 hearts in Master, if you get a super lucky theme you can get 4).
23+
6) Dugtrio for Magneton (Maggie) | Kanto Power Plant
24
7) Bonsly for Rhyhorn (Hornlette) | Diglett's Cave, 5pm-8pm | Requires Brock's Phone Number (Obtained at Diglett's Cave from 12pm - 3pm)
25-
In addition, you try to keep Taunt on Monferno for the whole run because it's a good contest move, which changes a few of the battles. Because this route doesn't play past Hearthome it can just give both Cut and Rock Smash to Monferno, so it doesn't need to catch anything either. As a result the best move for the 4th slot ends up being Grass Knot and playing in the Smart contest - as that allows you to pivot to try and fluke a max Voltage bonus from one of the judges too (since both Taunt and Grass Knot are Smart moves)
25+
8) Forretress for Beldum (Iron) | Saffron City, Silph Co | Requires triggering Steven at Vermillion by obtaining the Lost Item (only doable after fixing the Power Plant and talking to the Copycat in Saffron), then again at Silph Co and receiving a Hoenn Starter (only doable after defeating Red), then again in Pewter Museum.
26
9) Pikachu for Pikachu (Volty) | Saffron City, Train Station | Requires Surge's Phone Number (Obtained at Kanto Power Plant, after capturing Zapdos (which requires beating Blue), from 9am - 11am)
27-
You are heavily favoured to *not* win doing this strategy, you are playing from well behind going into the final part of the contest (Acting, where you use moves), and need really good luck from the AI to either not choose the same judge as you but the same as each other, so you get more hearts from bonuses, or to someone fluke a max bonus.
27+
10) Haunter for Xatu (Paul) | Pewter City
28
29-
My win rate on the Master Rank doing this strat so far has been about 5% (as in I've tried 20 times and won once). No idea what the actual chance of winning would be.

Q: Why Soul Silver for this run? Isn't Heart Gold normally used for Manipless?
30
A: Yes, Heart Gold is normally used for Manipless, as Bell Tower is seen as slightly better to do than Whirl Islands (easier to run from Ho-Oh, and an easier Max Revive in Bell Tower)
31
32-
A: 2:00:50 by Bounxii - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp8luHViozg

However in this run, you ideally catch a Krabby in Whirl Islands on the way to Lugia (you could fish for one in Olivine, but it's slower to do so). Additionally, the extra reasonably obtainable Rare Candy in Whirl Islands is also more beneficial, as there are a few extra Pokemon that need some Rare Candies (e.g. Pineco to evolve, and potentially Dratini -> Dragonair too)

39
Q: So what is the route for this run?
40
A: It's quite similar to a manipless run of the game, with a few other things added on. That means the generaly Pokemon route is
41
Cyndaquil -> Quilava until Goldenrod
42
Get Kenya, use Kenya to beat Morty
43
Catch L50 Magikarp above Mahogany, use Gyarados as main for the rest of the game.
44
45
The things that are added, are about preparing for the In Game trades. So obviously, I have to obtain the Pokemon required for those trades. That means I have to:
46
Catch a Bellsprout (Ideally on Route 31 before Violet, but it's only 20% here. If I don't get it there, I'll get it in Kanto on Route 24 where it's 35% to appear)
47
Catch a Drowzee (50% on Route 34, caught after exiting Ilex Forest, so it's in my party when I'm shopping during the Radio Tower segment)
48
Catch a Krabby (50% in Whirl Islands, done on the way to Lugia)
49
Catch a Female Dratini/Dragonair (Done after beating Blue, as I need the Super Rod from Kanto to fish one out)
50
Catch a Dugtrio (Done in Diglett's Cave)
51
Obtain a Bonsly, which requires catching a Sudowoodo (done on the respawned one, because catching with Poke Balls would be awful. I also get a female one to avoid catching a Ditto), and obtaining the Rock Incense (In Diglett's Cave, required Rock Climb so has to be after Brock), and hatching an Egg (given how late you obtain the Egg - you want a Pokemon that speeds up Egg Hatching. Because of this, I also obtain the Slugma Egg in Violet City at the start of the game to do just that)
52
Catch a Pineco, and evolve to Forretress (Done on Route 27, just before Victory Road)
53
Catch a Pikachu (~50% in Viridian Forest using Static Ability)
54
Catch a Haunter (Done on Route 8, right at the end of the run, because it required Night Time, and it only ticks over to night right after I trade Bonsly for Rhyhorn)
55
56
Also, since I have to catch Zapdos, I don't have a Master Ball to use for Red. As such, getting past Pikachu requires a different strategy, either using Shuckie Encore strats, or catching a Quagsire (I'm doing the former, other runs so far have done the latter)

60
Q: What are you playing on, it is emulator?
61
A: No, I'm playing on a 3DS with a capture board installed allowing me to record game footage. Usually I use a DS, but because there is not resetting here, a 3DS works the same for run, and has the circle pad, which is useful for catching Magikarp.
62

63
Q: Why do you choose Cyndaquil?
64
A: Because the Cyndaquil evolution family is the best for start of the speedrun.
65
66
Q: Why do you play as the girl?
67
A: The counterpart does the catching tutorial, and the male does it faster, so it’s faster to choose the female for yourself.

69

70
Q: Why do you name yourself 'I' and Cyndaquil and Gyarados 'J'?
71
A: Because it's faster to name them one character for text purposes, and the letter 'I' gives a nice spin as if the game was self-narrating. I use 'J' otherwise because it's a character really close to the "OK" button, so it's the easiest to select quickly.
