Pokemon Fire Red Trainer Tower FAQ

Pokemon Fire Red any% (Manipless) FAQ
2
3-
Reminder, I am running this category for ASM (Aus Speedruns Marathon), which is running from July 12-16.
3+
Q: Is this the glitched run?
4-
Make sure to follow them at: twitch.tv/ausspeedruns
4+
A: Yes
5-
And you can see the schedule at: https://ausspeedruns.com/ASM2023/schedule
5+
6
Q: Why are you running this?
7
A: I'm planning on submitting it for the AusSpeedruns event at Dreamhack (which is in April 26-28). So I need a submission video to do that, so I gotta do at least a run now.
8
9-
Q: What does Trainer Tower mean?
9+
Q: So how does this run work?
10-
A: The Trainer Tower is a battle facility in these games. There are 4 different modes with 8 battles each, and the aim is to clear the tower as fast as possible.
10+
A: This run is based around a Mail Corruption glitch you can activate in double battles. It requires the use of the moves Recycle, and Knock Off.
11
As such, it means you have to get a Mr Mime up to level 33 (for Recycle), and a Farfetch'd to Level 21 (for Knock Off). As such, you gotta catch an Abra, trade it for Mr Mime as soon as you get to Vermillion, and then use it as your main until it reaches Level 33.
12-
The Trainer Tower is located on Seven Island, meaning to access it you have to get the National Dex, which means you first have to catch 60 Pokes and beat the Elite Four (and get the Ruby, but NOT the Sapphire or the second Round of E4, which means no boring Mewtwo stuff =))
12+
13
So the route is a bit different in that regard for quite a bit of the run. After doing the glitch, you can warp straight to the end.
14-
Q: How does the Trainer Tower work? Is it like the Battle Tower?
14+
15-
A: It's a bit different. There is only 8 battle per mode *total*. The aim of the Trainer Tower is to clear it as fast as possible, rather than win continuously (though if you blackout, you do have to restart)
15+
16
A: Uhh I mean eventually it'll probably be sub 1:20, but for now anything I complete is fine.
17-
Each of those trainers use Pokemon at the same level as your highest Pokemon, so if you enter with a team that has a L57 Blastoise, all their Pokemon are at L57 too. Their Pokemon are in general stronger than others in the games - they have Held Items, EVs, and somewhat "decent" movesets.
17+
18
Q: What are the hardest fights in this run?
19-
But, you can use items in and between fights (and even go down the stairs and take the center/buy more items, but that's slow). The fights are always the same instead of being from a random pool. It is similar though in that you don't get money/experience from winning.
19+
A: Mostly the early game fights as usual. Mr Mime actually does pretty well for it's fights - the most annoying by far is actually the final one where you setup the glitch, mostly because it's the only one Mr Mime can disobey you on.
20
21-
The 4 different modes are: Singles, Doubles, Knockout (doing 3 1v1 fights in a row), and Mixed (a few of all 3 of the others)
21+
22
23-
Q: What is the team you are going to use for the Trainer Tower? Blastoise and Zapdos?
23+
24-
A: While that was my original plan, no. Instead I'm actually going to use a team of Level 3s.
24+
25

26-
If you catch a Level 3 Pikachu and evolve it, you can trade it for an Electrode. And since In-Game trades come at the same level as the Pokemon you traded in this game, you end up with a Level 3 Electrode. And Electrode starts with a move called Sonicboom, which always does 20 damage, allowing it to OHKO the majority of the Trainer Tower.
26+
27
A: Cause it beats the early game the best.
28-
It means I need at *least* 2 (and ideally 3+) other Level 2/3 Pokemon though, as I need Revive slaves. The options are: Rattata, Pidgey, Weedle, Caterpie, Wigglytuff, and Mankey. Wigglytuff is the most ideal, but rarest, because all of the other Pokemon would ideally evolve for extra Pokemon even if I did catch them.
28+
29
Q: Why AREN'T you doing manip for starter stats?
30
A: Because the "manip" in this game involves following the instructions of external tools, which to me personally crosses the line of having tools assisting your speedrun. So I choose to play the game in a way that actually feels legitimate to me, so all my runs of FR/LG are manipless.
31-
A: It was just to get Sub 4 hours, ultimately I'm just going to play this for the time leading up to ASM, and whatever improvement I get, I will take
31+
32
Q: What stats do you need on Squirtle?
33
A: At least 11 Special Attack, and I'm looking for Attack + Sp Att + Speed to be at least 31 (So 10/11/10, or 11/11/9, or 9/12/10, or 10/12/9 or better)
34-
A: There are quite a few tricky fights in the Trainer Tower, especially in Doubles. The very last fight is probably the hardest, a Double fight with Rhydon (21 HP, Quick Claw, and Lightningrod) and Gyarados.
34+
35
Q: Why do you play as the girl?
36
A: She's cute.
37

38
Q: Why do you name yourself and Squirtle 'I'?
39
A: Because it's faster to name them one character for text purposes, and the letter 'I' gives a nice spin as if the game was self-narrating
40
41
Q: What is WR?
42-
A: Cause it beats the game the best.
42+
A: You can see the any% record here: https://www.speedrun.com/pkmnfrlg?h=any-eng-console&x=mke1e5j2-6njye7vn.q759ydp1-yn23p9gl.1py4rov1
43
However, I am running without manip, which the runon this board use. Technically if I request any% Manipless, it'd just be whatever I get.
44
45
Q: Why is the screen so blurry??
46
A: Because Spain currently holds the soccer world cup, Vine just launched, Djokovic is about to win his 6th slam, SM64 records are held by siglemic, Gangnam Style just reached 1 billion views, the best way to reach me is to message me on Skype, Snowden is still in the US, and this is what things look like in 2013.
47
Enjoy your stay.
