- or go back to the newest paste.
The streets were loud that day. Orgol was a particularly dark region of the Ring, and more often than not seemed rather silent. This day was different. |
|
The people coming out of their homes, or looking at it from a balcony would see the fairly respectable Mr.Crabmaster run past Avras street, and into central Orgol. Crabmaster was exactly what his name suggested. A large crustacean lower half, skin made of gray rock and covered in moss. A muscular human torso, and a human arm a swell, also made of cracked rock. The other arm ended in a large pincer, whereas his face had a pair of chelicera, at the edges of the mouth, with long, green hair (or was it just algae?) growing out from behind. |
|
Crabmaster was a renown salesman of various goods that he acquired from his trade with an Avatar crew, the Cauldron Hunters. Specializing in goods that were extracted from the bodies of slain Cauldron creatures, these fellows had a very specific and regular clientele. Rather popular around Orgol of course, they were apparently considered odd around other parts of Dormina and other Avatars. |
|
Firing at people that were running his way, with an antiquated hand-cannon (perhaps it was meant to be used with two hands, but Crabmaster was larger than a human), loaded with...skulls, it seemed, the skull of creature. He had a bag, full of them holding it over his back. The people were wearing dark clothing, and had the lower half of their faces covered. Some carried rifles. Others, pistols and even bladed weapons. More than one knife, coated in some thick ooze. As they struck the wall, the ooze ate through the brick like it was nothing. |
|
Crabmaster fired his cannon once,as the skull exploded on contact with a wall across the street, releasing an explosion of green smoke that seemed to choke the men out for most part. Crabmaster then ran further down the alley, deeper into Orgol. Now there was a separation even within such a dark alley. |
|
Orgol was built right next to a large rock formation very close to the edge of Dormina. The edges were uneven, and sometimes they ate into the city a bit. Not noticeable in the grand scheme of things, barring that one neighborhood that gets built right next to it. Worse, the space right next to it was a large pit, and that is exactly where Old Orgol was built in. As new settlers were forced in, from the constant conflict in the nearby Varesh, buildings were placed on top of the old ones, forming a new layer of the area. |
|
New Orgol. And that is where these events were happening, a nicer area than what was below. Tradesmen like Crabmaster or the Cauldron Hunters found themselves in a lovely position, as the economy of New Orgol was relatively stable. Most of the population either lived there from the start, or had done whatever it could to move from the Old to New. Visiting the darkness below was considered unpleasant and was to be avoided. |

+ | Crabmaster, however was running straight at the entrance of Old Orgol. The last few people who saw him on the surface would later report to the law enforcement officials that he leaped right past the winding stairway, that lead below.

|
"Whhhhhat do you want?"-the tall Automaton turned to ask. Standing at the end of a dark alley, where a single stand selling various bottled liquids (each and every one of them having an odd glow, not to mention the variety in color, from bright yellow and fuchsia, to simple brown tones, and the occasional colorless sample), was Crabmaster, with a large cloth draped over him, dirty and worn, yet still functional to hide his identity. |
|
The tall stone-coated crustacean would have stood out in new Orgol, but down there very few things surprised, and a particularly large Incarnate barely bothered anyone. "The Scorpion prick. As well as that Hsanth venom. Two samples. Water. Salt. Airship fuel."-Crabmaster listed. |
|
"Airship fuel? You are going to have to be more specific."-The Automaton spoke up. While the request would have been eyebrow-rising in most other parts of Dormina, here nobody questioned what one would do with the fuel. In fact, it was probably the least dangerous ingredient on the list. Yes, even compared to water (and especially to salt), at least in Old Orgol. |
|
"The Aestland Flier, 990s model."-a bit old, at least by 20 years, nearing 30. A racing vessel however, remains a racing vessel and both men trading knew why this request was made. This was the only stand that sold such fuel. |
|
"Hold on just a second."-the automaton said, getting everything ready. The fuel itself was not going to be used for anything. Crabmaster was a merchant first and foremost, but in a past life he too had tangled in various unsightly enterprises. In the underbelly of Dormina he had learned how to tell apart poisons from one another, how to extract and neutralize them, how to make them in some cases. |
|
The fuel contained a processed variation of Deep Chamber Gas, which normally kept Aether in a liquid state. Various means were required to keep Aether in the desired state, whether it was gas, liquid, solid, a volatile plasma or alternate states like deep blue, white, black and the apocryphal purple. The Hsanth venom tended to neutralize the other irrelevant components in the fuel mixture, the Scorpion prick was then- |
|
"Here it is. That'll cost you. 1500 Elians."-the automaton said. A hefty price, but Crabmaster was prepared. He took out the money and handed it over, taking the supply with him. The small pouch of salt, the vial of water, a full bottle of airship fuel... all of it...hmm.. |
|
"Can I get them packaged?" |
|
"Hmm...40 Elians for that."-the automaton added. He took back the supplies and then after a few minutes, returned them in a cardboard box. Crabmaster thanked him and made off. Sneaking off into the shadows, through the alleys and finally making it to some open space. There he could try to set up the process. |
|
Taking out the fuel bottle, and then slowly pouring in the venom. He'd keep the compound as was, and wait for the teal liquid to slowly take on a greener hue. That was when he would need to mix in the Scorpion prick. Once the dust was all in, he took out a pistol and begun disassembling it. |
|
Crabmaster had little knowledge of weaponry, but he had learned this trick a while ago. For making the compound he wanted, he extracted the Aether injection mechanism, which was also responsible for accelerating the Aether to a level where firing it would actually cause damage. |
|
A simple side effect of this was that it produced heat. Sufficient heat to carry out the next process, and transform the compound to a state from which he could extract the type C gas. |
|
"FREEZE!"-wait...what? |
|
A large number of men flooded the alley. Covered from head to toe in black equipment, large caliber rifles as well as visor equipment, they surrounded Crabmaster, who could only leave behind his canon, the box, and put his hands up. There was no winning here, their weapons were quicker, and they had already taken aim at his joints and vitals. |
|
From the crowd, two men dressed in dark longcoats and glasses came in. Underneath, a black shirt and pants for both, likely capable of having the defensive equipment manifest. The Special Investigations Division? But why here? Why with him? The vial shouldn't have been such a big issue... |
|
"Sir, are you the merchant registered as 'Crabmaster', owning a business situated in New Orgol, Avras Street, number 34?"-the first of the two men spoke. He had blonde hair, neatly cut, with a rather cold expression and a loud voice. The fellow's skin was rather pale, and his jaw was clenched tight. He was a bit shorter than his companion, a taller man with brown hair, sticking just a bit upward, a little bit of a stubble as well as a more relaxed disposition. |
|
Crabmaster immediately recognized the former as a rookie. The later was harder to read of course. "Yes."-he simply replied. |
|
"And were you, earlier today given possession of a vial of green liquid, obtained illegally?"-the rookie asked again. |
|
"Illegally? No, I don't..."-Crabmaster put his hands up, waving them defensively. |
|
"Mr.Crabmaster, please be aware that we can and will screen all of your responses for potential falsities. If you are proven to have lied to a member of the Special Investigations Division of the Dorminan Law Enforcement, the consequences will be dire." |
|
"I do not deal in illegal goods. I have never stolen anything in my life. I do not buy from shady people. I have a list of trusted customers, and I make sure not to add people in it without good reason. So if I obtained something illegally, I'd be as surprised as you are. Is this about...the vial?"-Crabmaster said that last bit with a hint of curiosity. The people hunting him... They had to have been after it. |
|
Just what was this all about? |
|
The rookie prepared to speak up again, but the other man stopped him. "So if you don't deal in illegal goods...I assume whoever sold it to you must have been int his trusted list of yours, right?"-the older investigator asked in a calm voice. |
|
Crabmaster nodded in response. |
|
"SO then I assume you have a name, an address, some information on him for us?"-the investigator asked. |
|
"Hmph... Is it necessary for me to provide such information?"-Crabmaster asked. "I'd love to help you all...but I do not want to betray my clients. Can you confirm that the vial was obtained illegally in the first place?" |
|
"It 'belongs' to infamous drug lord, Aligos Hansa. Is that proof enough for you?"-the rookie asked. |
|
"From...Hansa? I was under the impression it was some sort of poison. That is why I came here, to destroy it. I would get rid of whatever was inside it, and be done with it."-Crabmaster said. |
|
"How were you going to get rid of..."-the rookie was going to question, but Crabmaster preempted him by pointing at the compounds on the ground. |
|
"Old trick. You take some salt, water, Hsanth poison, Scorpion prick and airship fuel. I prefer the 990 Aestland Flier." |
|
For some reason this mention had both Investigators surprised, looking at one another. "Why that particular variety?"-the old investigator asked. |
|
"Hmmm? Well, it's the fourth best variety of fuel, and the top market pick at least from what's available. I had no better option."-Crabmaster said. |
|
"Fourth? What's the other..."-the rookie went ahead to ask. |
|
"Obviously, in 998 they altered the fuel composition. Which means most modern airships have a greater concentration of Deep Chamber Gas in their fuels. Type C. So that's one. |
|
Another is the fuel they put in the Atharom warships. They use what we call Deep Chamber Gas D. Dorminan technology isn't adapted to it, so we don't use it for fuels." |
|
"So why don't you get one of these Atharom warships?"-the rookie asked. "Or at least their fuel." |
|
The older one however shook his head. "Pardon this one. He's new."-and after that he turned to the blond rookie. "Atharom is the name of the imperial province of Keffar." |
|
"...R-right. Pardon that. Anyway... what's the..." |
|
"A project undertaken by the government. The Cauldron Explorer Prototype. CEP. It never came to be, but an amount of fuel was made for it. Funnily part of the reason for it was the fact that the fuel itself was highly volatile. That and the requirements for it to explore Cauldrons are a bit...expensive, to say the least."-Crabmaster said. |
|
"...Hmm...and how do you happen to know all of this? Pardon me, but I do not assume the job of a merchant in Old Orgol has you as too closely related to...airship fuel? At least that's not what I know New Orgol to generally trade in, but I could be mistaken."-the experienced investigator pointed out. |
|
"I have a thing for aeronautics. My entire species does, in fact. It is probably related to a memory from he days of the war, prior to our great division. I don't know much of it...I don't talk to many people of my species, and none of them that I know of live in Dormina. |
|
Something about flying makes us...happy? I enjoy attending races too, whenever I can. All the way to the other end of the city. It takes a while to get there, but it's worth it."-Crabmaster replied. |
|
"Right. So you expect us to believe you know nothing of the Vermillion St-"-the rookie was about to say, when the other investigator grabbed his arm firmly. "Not one more word out of you." |
|
"Vermillion St...what?"-Crabmaster asked. "Is that a ship? Hmm...but what could be so amazing about a ship? Perhaps it is the one those Jouberts are looking for in the Catacombs?" |
|
"You know about that?!"-the rookie asked. |
|
"Yes. I trade with Avatars, they speak...I listen. I know things." |
|
"The Vermillion Star is the ship that was used to retrieve that vial you carry. It was piloted by a great Avatar and it retrieved that sample."-the experienced investigator said. |
|
"...Hmm? This one?"-Crabmaster then took it out. The black liquid inside a small vial, lying right underneath his cloak. |
|
"Indeed. Which by the way, we'll be taking."-the rookie said, as one of the men surrounding Crabmaster picked the vial up. |
|
"Wait! What is in that bottle? I deserve to know."-Crabmaster said. |
|
"Hmm... The liquid was allegedly taken from the Underworld."-The older investigator said. |
|
"The Nobles?"-Crabmaster asked as the investigators cleared the ally. |
|
"No. The other Underworld."
