Pokemon White 2 Baton Pass FAQ
2
3-
Q: Why are you running this game again?
3+
Q: What is Baton Pass?
4-
A: The primrary answer is actually because I'm running this game for an AusSpeedruns marathon this week.
4+
A: Baton Pass speedruns are runs where you change the Pokemon used for every major battle.
5-
You can find the schedule to that marathon here: https://horaro.org/fast2020/schedule
5+
6-
I'm actually the first run, so make sure to follow the channel so you don't miss it: https://www.twitch.tv/ausspeedruns
6+
Q: What are the exact rules:
7
A: Each major battle (Gym Leader, Ghetsis, E4 member, Champion) needs to be defeated with a different Pokemon. A Pokémon which takes part in a major battle (that is, the Pokémon is sent out in the fight) can not be used to battle in a future major battle (that is, the Pokémon can not use an attack.)
8-
Q: So are you actually trying to improve your time?
8+
9-
A: Yes I absolutely want to improve. Ideally I'd like a 3:11.
9+
A Pokémon which has been used in a major battle can be sent out in a future major battle provided that it does not attack. (for example, to use a Revive on the Pokemon you are using for that battle.)
10
11-
---
11+
A different Pokemon is defined as a Pokemon that is of a different species, and not evolved directly from a Pokemon used prior (for example, you can not use a Tepig for one Gym Leader, and then evolve it to Pignite and use it again.)
12
13
There are no restrictions for non-major battles.
14
15
Q: What Pokemon will you use for each major fight?
16-
Q: Why do you choose Tepig?
16+
A: There are a couple of fights where different Pokemon are used on a "catch whichever shows up first" basis, but the current route is as follows:
17-
A: Because the Tepig evolution family is the best for the speedrun. He isn't used for the whole run, however.
17+
18
Cheren: Lillipup / Pidove / Azurill
19-
Q: What do you use instead?
19+
Roxie: Magnemite / Pidove
20-
A: I catch a Drilbur before Burgh, and use Excadrill throughout the game. I still use Pignite for Burgh's Gym (giving Drilbur exp Share), but then switch to Drilbur straight after as my main Pokemon.
20+
Burgh: Pignite
21
Elesa: Sandslash / Trapinch
22-
Q: Are Drilbur/Excadrill's stats manipulated?
22+
Clay: Deerling / Sawsbuck
23-
A: Yes! I manipulate both the dust cloud appearance and Drilbur's stats at the same time.
23+
Skyla: Zebstrika
24
Drayden: Cobalion
25-
Q: How does this run compare to Challenge Mode?
25+
Marlon: Amoonguss
26-
A: All of the Gym Leaders and E4 are much quicker (1 less poke, and also lower IVs, worse moves/items), but all of the 'standard' trainers are a little bit harder, just because you are slightly lower level.
26+
Ghetsis: Weavile / Mamoswine
27
Caitlin: Crustle
28
Shauntal: Zoroark
29-
A: The worst fight in this run honestly is Cheren, just because you speedtie his Lillipup, making it generally a 50/50 win as I'll play risky there to save time. Other than that, Charles/Rood can be a bit annoying with Drilbur, and Hugh 3 is the worst fight with Excadrill.
29+
Marshal: Gligar
30
Grimsley: Mienshao / Golduck / Bouffalant
31-
Q: Why do you keep resetting and changing the time?
31+
Iris: Excadrill
32-
A: I need to use a specific time in order to use RNG manipulation, so I set the clock in such a way that I can use it. The timer counts down to when I need to start the game for the correct second.
32+
33
-
34-
Q: What is RNG?
34+
35-
A: Random Number Generator, the thing that determines everything random within the game, such as stats, encounters and pokerus.
35+
For reference, I am doing this run Manipless. This is because I've prepared this route for races more than anything else, this run is to make sure the route works. Using manips would obviously be faster, however there are quite a few Pokes that would be better to get without manips, just to save the time from saving and restarting the game, given some of the Pokemon are only used for a handful of fights, gambling on the stats would be a better strat on average.
36
37-
Q: What is RNG Manipulation?
37+
-
38-
A: RNG manipulation is used in this speedrun, which involves resetting on a specific second starting the game at a specific time, a to hit a specific seed.
38+
39
Q: What are you playing on, it is emulator?
40-
Q: What causes the resets?
40+
41-
A: I missed initial starting seed. There are 2 ways to check whether I hit the correct seed:
41+
42-
1) After setting my and my rivals name, the game sets up a save. At this point, there is a "clock hand" that rotates clockwise. Where it starts is determined by the seed. So I know that unless it starts by pointing diagonally Up-Right, I missed it
42+
43-
2) I check the movement of the NPCs in Aspertia City. Because their movement is derived from the RNG, I can tell I hit it based on their movements. This is used as a second check, most runs that get to this check will progress
43+
A: There are quite a few fights that are really tricky depending on your stats. Ghetsis and Iris stand out as really tough ones imo.
44
45-
Hitting the seed is only based off the second, not the frame in gen 5, so it's a lot easier to hit than it is in gen 4/3. However there is another mechanic at play, the "Timer0" fluctuates seemingly randomly, and is what causes the inconsistencies. If you want a rough estimate of the chance of it being the one I want, I can't give you one because it isn't actually a random chance (as far as we know), but so far I've only hit 5 different Timer0s
45+
Q: Do you catch anything that isn't used in fights?
46
A: Generally speaking I need a Surf and a Fly slave. One of them is the Pokemon that beats Cheren (Pidove for Fly, Azurill/Herdier for Surf), so I need to catch another to do the other. This can be a wide variety of things too, from one of those 3 listed if they both show up, or Psyduck/Audino or Zubat/Ducklett
47-
For Manipulated Drilbur, the first thing I can use as a guide is whether the Dust Cloud shows up. If it doesn't show up when I know it should, then I know I missed the Timer0 I want. There's also a chance that one will show up but in a different spot, which also means I missed the Timer0 I want, and have to reset regardless.
47+
48
Q: Why White 2 and not Black 2?
49-
Q: Why don't you check Tepigs stats? What are Tepigs stats like?
49+
50-
A: Tepigs starting stats are the same every time RNG manipulation is used, and due to the huge number of possible seeds, are almost perfect in this game (31/31/31/30/25/30). The nature however is decided independently to the IVs, and is based on the RNG Frame when I pick him. If I do movement correctly, so that the NPCs move around the right amount, it should be the target: Rash.
50+
51
Q: Why do you play as the boy/girl?
52-
Q: What are Drilbur's stats like?
52+
A: Both play the same. I prefer the girl design, so I pick her.
53-
A: Drilbur has 31 IV is everything but Sp Att (which is 13). Drilbur only uses Sp Att in one fight, the first fight it does against Colress, but because it's ability is manipulated to be Sand Force, it's Sp Att does not matter much for that fight (it needs to be 7+ IV to 2HKO). It's also an Adamant nature, highest level (19 out of 16-19) and a Female, to avoid Attract from Skyla/Grimsley.
53+
54
Q: Why do you name yourself and NOT Tepig 'I'?
55-
Q: What encounters will you get?
55+
A: Because it's faster to name myself one character for text purposes. Most Pokemon aren't used enough to be worth nicknaming, Excadrill is the only exception.
56-
A: If I do the manipulation for encounters correctly, I should get both a Pidove, and a Psyduck before Cheren as HM Slaves (for Fly, and Surf/Strength)
56+
57

58-
Q: Do you catch anything else?
58+
59-
A: No, just those 2. I leave Pignite in the box so it doesn't come out in the triple fights, or register in the Hall of Fame
59+
A: See: Splits | https://www.speedrun.com/pkmnbw2ext#Baton_Pass
60

61-
Q: So why don't you just manipulate everything in the game?
61+
62-
A: Quite simply, nothing else is really worth it. There's no roamer/legendary worth getting, no Master Ball lottery, etc. There's also different types, while you are in battles certain RNGs advance making it impossible to control for any length of time.
62+
A: Would be nice to get under 4:10, and maybe even push to sub 4 with a really great run.
