  1. Good afternoon! It’s currently MINUS ONE degree, with light freezing rain, at the Loyola Campus of Concordia University. I’m Holly Cabrera. AND HERE ARE TODAY’S HEADLINES: The potential ramifications of Bill 21. Bike helmets and bike lanes give Montrealers headaches. And… why buy food, when you can grow it?
  2. 01 / BILL 21 / RAZZAK / FEATURE
  3. A former teacher at Beaconsfield High School believes that it’s time to take a strong stand against Bill 21, Quebec’s new secularism law. She claims that the law limits many of her personal freedoms. Our reporters Nikita Razzak and Clara Gepner have the story.
  4. 02 / BILL 21/ RAZZAK/ DEBRIEF
  5. Nikita Razzak now joins us in studio with more information. Q1: Nikita, have there been any legal challenges made to stop the implementation of Bill 21?
  6. Q2: So two different court cases. Why has the E-M-S-B decided to also fight this legislation?
  7. Q3: We have seen a lot of reactions inside of the province. What has been the reaction from the rest of Canada?
  8. 03 / Immigrants / GIROUX / VOSOT
  9. Thank you, Nikita. Data from Elections Canada shows that close to SIXTY-FIVE PER CENT of ELIGIBLE voters cast their ballot during last month’s federal election. Among those who voted were new Canadians citizens. Our reporter Jean-Phillipe Giroux has the story.
  10. 04 / FOOD SECURITY/ GOLDBERG/ FEATURE
  11. Snow is on the ground and that means that community gardens are now closed for the season.
  12. But before the snowflakes fell, C-J-C-N looked into the work of ONE local organisation in Ville-Émard-Côte-Saint-Paul that was in full bloom. Reporters Naomi Goldberg, Lucie Laumonier, and Cécile Riche have the story.
  13.
  14. TAG: Naomi Goldberg was one of the producers of that story and now joins us with more. Q1: Naomi, the manager of the collective garden talks about food deserts. What is a food desert?
  15. Q2: And where are food deserts typically located?
  16. 05 / BIKE HELMETS / CABRERA / STORY
  17. It sure is. That’s some food for thought. Thanks Naomi. During better weather… many Montrealers commute by bicycle. But despite helmets preventing injuries and saving lives … cyclists often don’t wear them. Should wearing helmets be mandatory? Clara Gepner and Astrid Rousselin explain.
  18. 06 / BIKE LANE / LAUMONIER / STORY
  19. A new bicycle lane on Verdun street has shop owners and cyclists on opposite sides. The pilot project started last year. It turned nearly THREE HUNDRED parking spots into a THREE-kilometer bike lane. This spring, a dozen shop owners sued the Verdun borough but were unsuccessful. THEY claimed that the lack of parking spaces was driving customers away. The Association pour la mobilité active de Verdun has since launched initiatives with the hope that shop owners and cyclists can work in tandem. Our reporters Lucie Laumonier and Andrei Venter have more.
  20.
  21. TAG: Our reporter Lucie Laumonier now joins us in studio. Q1: Lucie ... How unhappy are the shop owners?
  22. Q2: What are the Association pour la mobilité de Verdun’s plans for the bike lane?
  23. 7 / COOPERATHON/ CABRERA/ STORY
  24. Thank you, Lucie. The Cooperathon is one of the largest international innovation contests. Teams compete for one month to create a viable and innovative business start-up. Nicolas Delivre has more.
  25. 08 / Life of a Pumpkin / GIROUX / Feature
  26. Halloween means pumpkins and this year’s had no shortage on display around the city. Over EIGHTY thousand metric tons of pumpkins are grown each year for cooking and decorating. Our Reporter Jean-Philippe Giroux looked into what you can do
  27. with your jack-o-latern.
  28.
  29. TAG: Our reporter Jean-Philippe Giroux now joins me with more. Q1: It seems that this year’s Halloween postponement by the city of Montreal... had a NEGATIVE impact on the Pumpkin Parade?
  30. os.
  31. Q2: Why was the turnout so much worse if... all the city did was ...push back Halloween by one day?
  32. Q3: You also found out that PUMPKIN WASTE is … a bit of a myth... is that true?
  33. 9 / Weather / Extro / CABRERA
  34. Thank you, Jean-Philippe. And that’s your news for today. Thanks for watching. For C-J-C-N, I’m Holly Cabrera. [Main Newsbed Theme]
