- Tompa and Arner were speedrunners for Donkey Kong Country 1. But in addition, they also did speedruns with tools supported by emulators. This practice is known as TAS and in the future, here on the channel, there will be a dedicated video to explain what TAS is. Well, back in 2010, these two were playing Donkey Kong and looking for bugs in the game, just to have fun. On one of these afternoons in 2010, the two were testing the invisible barrel bug, which was already a well-known trick at the time. However, the trick was to just make the barrel invisible, nothing was known about the properties of what the invisible barrel did. But one thing was certain, Tompa and Arner knew that this trick caused the game to crash easily. So they decided to compete against each other to see who could get the furthest in the Elevator Antics phase with the bug active without causing the game to crash. Eventually Tompa managed to reach the end of the stage without the game crashing. When he reached the end of the level, he decided to release the invisible barrel and entered the bonus. And then, out of nowhere, he was teleported to the first phase of the game.
- This left the two players intrigued, after all, the tompa was in the fifth phase of the third world and out of nowhere he was teleported back to the first phase. This method of teleportation was something new and the two began to investigate.
- Arne, with the help of an emulator, tried to reproduce the bug to see what exactly it did with the game's memory and noticed that the Invisible Barrel was capable of changing the values of the game's inputs and outputs. He then spent afternoons testing and calculating all the teleportation possibilities that could occur using this bug. At the time, the best results were to make the barrel bug invisible in the first phase, make some specific moves and enter the game's first bonus. The exchange of information took the player from the first phase straight to the fifth phase of the fourth world. This discovery was incredible and in October 2010 Tompa did a speedrun aided by an emulator with save states and perfect control precision to finish Donkey Kong country 1 in 16 minutes and 22 seconds. This feat was revolutionary at the time, after all, the two had discovered the Wrong Warp, the wrong teleport from Donkey Kong Country 1. Months later, in February 2011, Tompa was talking to Arne and the two were thinking about whether it would be possible to improve this trick. Arne investigated some more and realized that if you managed to exit a bonus with two monkeys at the same time, the teleportation information could be exchanged even further.
- The problem was that then they would need some bonus that had a DK barrel so they could test this theory. A bonus with a DK barrel is very rare. There was one in the Millstone Mayhem stage, but the Dk barrel in the bonus stage here is up there. And by destroying the barrel up here it was impossible to exit the bonus with the monkeys at the same time, after all, for that to happen, you have to destroy the barrel at the same time as leaving the level. With this problem in hand, Tompa remembered this bonus from the orang utan gang phase. Here is a Dk barrel and an exit right next to it. The problem was... how were they going to get an invisible barrel here without crashing the game? And, by coincidence, miracle, luck or whatever, at this stage there is also an animal available. The ostrich. And at the time they already knew that it was possible to carry a barrel with an animal. And well, with all the pieces falling into place, the theory was tested and it worked. By entering the bonus with the invisible barrel and leaving it with both monkeys at the same time, Tompa was able to teleport to the last world. And right on April Fools' Day, on April 1, 2011, Tompa finished another speedrun aided by emulators that completed Donkey Kong Country 1 in 8 minutes and 13 seconds. A huge jump from the 16 minutes they had previously.
- With the discovery of the Wrong Warp trick and the pieces falling into place, what was once just a theory became reality. And a few years later, players started implementing the tricks discovered by Tompa and Arne and Donkey Kong was beaten in less than 10 minutes for the first time in 2013.
- And that's the story of this trick. People who love the game having fun with the bugs, testing random things and discovering one of the most powerful tricks in the game. I wanted to tell you this story because I know how curious you are about how you discover some tricks. One day there will be a video just about this topic.
