- “This is new,” Blue says, and when she turns back to the enclosure, she finds a swollen and ailing animal. Its face contorts, jaw distending as already sharp teeth grow sharper. “Holy shit, Richard, look.”
- The scientist jumps up from his seat and rushes over to watch the transformation. Short paws lengthen into sleek, avian legs, tipped with talons. Hair falls from its body in little tufts, and its skin suctions to its ribcage. Bones press through the surface of flesh, and it’s as if the creature is being flayed alive.
- This was supposed to be a litmus test—repair damaged cells and destroy malignant tumors. Blue isn’t sure about the cancer part, but the repairing is definitely happening. The rat’s body radiates heat like it’s cooking, some function of the pathogen’s incredible transformative capabilities. It’s hot enough to denature the rat muscle proteins, but Blue isn’t sure this is going to be a rat at the end of the day.
