- Take 3 minutes to read the integrated writing text from DELTS 7 test 2
- ---
- R0 (main point) = hydropower is better than other forms of power generation
- R1 = convenient, responds quickly to demands
- R2 = “clean and green”, doesn’t use fossil fuels
- R3 = efficient and cheap, energy source is renewable
- ---
- Before listening, you can make some guesses about the points the lecture might make.
- - The main point is likely to oppose the main point of the reading (hydropower is not so great)
- ---
- Listen to the lecture and take notes on the main points.
- L0 = hydropower has many disadvantages
- L1 = not convenient for the people who live in the flooded area, who have to move somewhere else
- L2 = silt and toxic heavy metals concentrate at the dam, which will be a dangerous and expensive mess to clean
- L3 = causes problems for fish and insects and birds; also may not be reliable in the long run if weather patterns change
- ---
- Note that the R2 paragraph also mentions waste, and R3 talks about how water is and always will be renewable into the future.
- The relevant points from the reading may not be what you thought at first.
- ---
- A point-by-point response has four paragraphs:
- 1 Introduction: state the topic and what the reading and listening say about it, make their relationship to each other clear
- 2 First point: summarize R1 and L1, and explain how they’re related
- 3 Second point: summarize R2 and L2, and explain how they’re related
- 4 Third point: summarize R3 and L3, and explain how they’re related
- ---
- A block format response has three paragraphs:
- 1 Introduction: same as in point-by-point
- 2 Reading summary: summarize all three main points from the reading
- 3 Listening and relationship: summarize the points from the listening and be clear about which points from the reading they relate to

- Write about otters.

- With your partner, look at the example responses from another class. What’s good and bad about each one? What score should it receive?
- ---
- When the text mentions two options/explanations/choices and then argues for one, the lecture probably argues for the other.
- ---
- A - 1 point at most - This doesn’t mention any of the points from the lecture and it’s incorrect in its summary of what the text says.
- B - 5 points - This includes all the points, and though there is some awkward wording, it also demonstrates a variety of vocabulary and correct complex grammar structures.
- C - 1.5 points - The first point from the lecture is missing, the other two are incomplete (and lack the key information that connects them to points from the text). In addition, the grammar is very bad.
- D - 3 points - While this is generally pretty good, it doesn’t correctly summarize the first point from the lecture. There are also a lot more grammar problems in this one than in B.

- In addition to reading and listening about academic topics you’re unfamiliar with, there are many local museums you could go to.
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ether_Dome - Medical history museum at MGH.
- Harvard Natural History Museum / Peabody Museum - Biology, zoology, geology, botany (glass flowers), and anthropology (in the Peabody)
- MFA - Museum of Fine Arts - art history, American art, indigenous art
- Museum of Science - all areas of science
- New England Aquarium - marine biology

- Homework (optional): If you want more feedback on today’s writing than a score and a sentence or two, email me with a self-evaluation of your response. What did you do well? (What did you do better than previous writing practice?) What did you do poorly? (Did you do anything worse than previously? What will you try to improve for next time?)
