　ルーデウスの温情により神子が無事だった事。
The Miko was safe thanks to Rudeus.
　事故の責任はミリス教団にあること。
The Milis religious community was held responsible for the incident.
　ミリス教団は責任を取り、以後『龍神』オルステッド、及びルーデウス・グレイラットの行動を全面的に協力し、また支援する事。
The church took responsibility, and proclaimed that they would fully cooperate with Dragon God Orsted and Rudeus Greyrat, and, moreover, support them.
　この『行動』には魔族に関する事も含まれるが、法律上問題のある行為は含まれないものとする。
There was no formal decision regarding the treatment of the demon race, that was left as a legal question to be settled at a later time.

　という感じだ。
It was that kind of thing.

　今回の主犯の二人、教皇と枢機卿は、当然のようにサインした。
The two principal offenders, the Pope and the Cardinal, naturally signed the contract.
　枢機卿の額に流れる冷や汗が実にキュートだ。

　証文と引き換えに、神子の返還が行われ、解散となった。
The Miko was returned in exchange for the contract.
　関係者各位は先ほどの簡易裁判の決定通り、この後また別に評定会議によって、今回の失態の責任を取らされるのだそうだ。
As for the parties responsible, it was decided that a trial would be held at a later date in order to have them take responsibility for this incident.
　どういう罰になるのかわからないが、枢機卿はうまく逃げるのだろうな。
I don't know how that will turn out, the Cardinal might flee before receiving his sentence.

　まあ、追い詰めるのは俺の仕事じゃあない。
Well, tracking people down is part of my job description.
　ヒトガミの手先でないのなら、邪魔者であっても敵ではないし、
If they're not one of Hitogami's lackeys, then they're just a minor nuisance.
　枢機卿一人を潰した所で、魔族排斥派が消滅するわけではないのだから。
Even after the Cardinal was taken out of the picture, the Expulsion Faction didn't disappear.

　その後、ゼニスとクリフを連れて、家に戻った。
Afterwards, Zenith, Cliff, and I returned to the house.
　帰る途中、クリフがぽつりと言った。
On the way back, Cliff sighed and apologized.

「すまなかった」
"Sorry."

　きょとんとする俺に、クリフは言った。
I looked back at him, puzzled.

「なんですか、急に」
"What's this, suddenly?"
「考えてみれば、今回の誘拐は僕の不用意な発言から起きたものだった。
"If you think about it, this kidnapping incident originated from my careless remarks.
　最終的にいい形に収まったけど、

　口先だけで偉そうなことばかり言って、引っ掻き回してただけな気がするよ」

　クリフは肩を落としていたが……そんな事より、今回の一件でのクリフの立場の方が心配だよ。

　家では、ウェンディが待っていた。
Wendy was waiting for us when we arrived home.

「あ、おかえりなさい」

　にわかに、アイシャとギースは無事だろうかという気持ちが湧き上がる。
I suddenly started to worry about Aisha and Gisu, they're safe right?
　証文を書く時に、それとなく探ってみたが、枢機卿や神殿騎士団は「知らない」としか言わなかった。
While we were drawing up the contract, I asked the Cardinal and the Temple Knights but they just responded with [We don't know.]

　なんて心配は杞憂に終わった。
My worries were groundless.
　二人は床下から出てきた。
Two people came out from under the floor.

「ふぅ、お帰りなさい、お兄ちゃん……に、ゼニスお母さん」
"Phew, welcome home, Oniichan... and Zenith-okaasan."

　ほっと息をつく二人。
The two of them let out a sigh of relief.
　事情を聞いてみると、
Hearing their circumstances,
　彼らは、朝早くにクレアとカーライルが家を出て教団本部に移動した、という情報を得て、俺に知らせようと教団本部に行こうとしたらしい。
Apparently Claire and Carlyle left for the religious headquarters early this morning, and after learning that, they immediately set out to inform me.
　だが、時すでに遅かった。
But, it was already too late.
　彼らが教団本部に到着した頃には、神殿騎士団が騒ぎ出していた。
By the time they arrived at the headquarters, the Temple Knights had already begun to move.
　教団本部に移動したクレア、テレーズと接触を図っている俺。
I had already moved to make contact with Therese, and Claire was already inside the headquarters.
　二人が接触し、何かが起こったに違いない。
With all these pieces moving, they knew something must have happened.
　そう考えた彼らは、俺からの命令を思い出し、クリフ邸に帰還。
Thinking that, they remembered my instructions, and returned to Cliff's house.
　荷造りをしてから家の奥に隠れ、夜になったら町の外に脱出しようとしていたそうだ。
They planned to wait until night, and then make their escape from the town.

「途中、なんどか神殿騎士団の人がきたけど、今度はちゃんと追い返しました！」
"The Temple Knights came looking here several times, and I properly turned them away!"

　ウェンディは、今回はちゃんと仕事をしてくれたようだ。
Wendy seems to have done her job correctly this time.
　しかし、やはり枢機卿はアイシャ・ギースにも手を回そうとしていたのか。
However, the Cardinal was targeting Aisha and Gisu as suspected.
　危ない所だった。

「それにしてもお兄ちゃん、お母さんが帰ってきたって事は……？」

「ああ、終わったよ」

　アイシャとギースに事の詳細を話した。
I explained the details to Aisha and Gisu.
　アイシャは全てを聞き終えた後、感嘆の声を漏らし、目をキラキラさせながら言った。
After I'd finished explaining, Aisha's eyes were twinkling, and she started talking in a voice of admiration.

「なんか、お兄ちゃんってさ、英雄みたいだよね。

　回りが失敗して窮地に陥ってもさ、

　馬鹿な事を言う。

The next day.
　ゼニスを神子に診てもらうため、教団本部へ。
I took Zenith to the religious headquarters for the Miko to give her a neurological exam.

　カーライルとクレアの二人がクリフ邸まで迎えに来て、共に馬車で移動した。
Two people, Carlyle and Claire, came to pick us up at Cliff's house in a horse-drawn carriage.

　馬車の中では、カーライルと会話した。
While we were riding in the carriage, I was chatting with Carlyle.

　彼は、今回の事を深く悔恨しているようで、何度も俺に謝罪をした。
He seems to deeply regret what had happened, and apologized profusely.
　俺は失敗を咎めるつもりはない。

　五人も乗っている馬車の中で、沈黙を保っていた。
Out of the five people riding in the carriage, only she was silent.

　迷っているうちに、教団本部へと到着してしまった。
While I was procrastinating, we arrived at the headquarters.


　正式な手続きを取り、教団本部の中枢での拝謁を許された。
I went through the normal formalities, and was granted an audience in the center of the headquarters.

　連れて来られたのは、恐らくいつも神子が使われる部屋なのだろう。
We were brought to a room, this is probably the room the Miko normally uses.
　教皇と会った時のように、中央に透明な障壁の張られた場所に、椅子が二つ、窓は一つ。
Just like when I met with the Pope, it was a room divided by a transparent barrier with two chairs and a window.
　やや薄暗い室内に、護衛が６人。
It was a little dim, six escorts stood guard.
　テレーズの姿は無い。
Therese wasn't among them.
　更迭されたのだろうか。
I wonder if she was replaced...

　ともあれ、護衛の取り巻きたちに囲まれての診察だ。
Anyway, it looks like the escorts are going to stay for the examination.
　もっとも、今回はさほど警戒されてはいなかった。
Well, I shouldn't need to be particularly cautious of them this time.
　護衛達は誰もがバツの悪そうな顔で、俺から顔を逸らした。
All of them had embarrassed expressions and avoided looking in my direction.

　神子とゼニスは向かい合わせに椅子に座った。
Miko and Zenith were sitting in the two chairs, facing each other.
　ダストがゼニスの頭を掴んで、頭を固定させ、目を見開かせた。
Dust held Zenith's head, and had her meet the Miko's eyes.
　そこを、神子が顔を近づけて覗き込む。
Then, the Miko brought her face closer and had a look.

　まるで眼科の検診みたいだ。
It almost seems like an eye exam.

"...Oh."

　神子と、ゼニスの目線が光った。
Looking at the Miko, Zenith's eyes glistened.
　目線が光る。
Her eyes seemed brighter.
　……としか言い様がない。
... Still no expression though.
　見つめ合う目と目の間に、うっすらとした光の筋が走っているのだ。

　今まで、こんな光は出なかった。
Until now, I'd never seen such a light.

「さすがミコ様……」
"As one would expect of Miko-sama..."
「いつもながら神々しい……」

　取り巻き連中がほうとため息をつく。
Her lackeys were gushing under their breath.
　今まで、こうした光は出なかった。

　演出だろうか。

　クレアが、胸の前できゅっと拳を握ったのが見える。
Claire was tightly grasping her hands in front of her chest as she watched.
　祈るようなそのポーズに、俺も気を引き締める。
She had a pose like she was in prayer, I braced myself as well.

　今、ゼニスは過去の記憶を赤裸々に暴かれている。
Right now, the Miko is looking into Zenith's memories.
　あの迷宮の奥底。
The depths of the labyrinth...
　魔力結晶の中へと飛んだ時の記憶も見えるかもしれない。
Maybe a memory of being trapped in the magic crystal...
　ゼニスの記憶から、何かが原因だったとわかれば、解決の方法も見つかるかもしれない。
If she can find whatever caused this in Zenith's memories, then we might be able to figure out a cure.

　神子が小さな声を上げ、びくりと震える。
The Miko raised a small voice, and trembled with a start.
　即座にダストがゼニスの頭を離し、スッと神子の肩に触れた。
Dust immediately let go of Zenith and put his hand on the Miko's shoulder to comfort her.

　神子は目を見開いたまま、ゆっくりと立ち上がった。
The Miko stood up, wide eyed.
　俺の方をまっすぐに見てくる。
Looking directly at me.

「ルーデウス・グレイラット」
"Rudeus Greyrat."
「はい」
"Yes."

　フルネームで呼ばれて居住まいを正す。
I straightened myself up after hearing my full name being called.

「ゼニス・グレイラットの記憶を見ました」
"I have seen the memories of Zenith Greyrat."
「どうでしたか？」
"How is she?"
「転移事件まで、彼女はフィットア領のブエナ村にて、ノルンとアイシャを育てながら、村の治療院を手伝う日々を送っていました」
"Before the Metastasis Event, she lived in Buena village, part of the Fedoa Territory, raising Norn and Aisha while working in the village's clinic."

"After she was separated from you, Zenith thought about you every day. Did Rudy eat properly, is he properly changing his clothes, how many girls has he called out to..."

　おう。

　ごめんなさい。
I'm sorry.
　いやでも、あの頃は浮気とかしてなかったよ。
Well, it's not like I was really fooling around back then.
　下半身に支配される前のルーデウス大陸は平和だった。

　無防備なシルフィ国に対しても侵攻せずに数年を過ごすことが出来たぐらいだからな。
That was still several years before the invasion of the defenseless Sylphy Country.
　この数年のシルフィへの接し方からは想像もできない。
I can hardly remember a time before Sylphy.

「彼女の記憶は、あなたを心配している時に真っ白に染まり、一度途切れます」
"Her memory, dyed pure white in worry about you, and then it's temporarily interrupted."

　転移事件だ。
The Metastasis Event.
　俺はあの瞬間を目撃した。
I was an eye-witness to that moment.
　だが、ほとんどの人間は、何が起こったかわからぬまま、気づいたら転移していたという。
But, most people didn't even survive long enough to comprehend what had happened, being teleported before they noticed...
　パウロもそうだったし、リーリャもそうだったらしい。
Paul was in his prime, and so was Lilia.

「その後、しばらく彼女の記憶は真っ黒な視界に閉ざされます」
"Afterwards, her memory becomes pitch black."
「……しばらく、ですか？」
"... For a while, what?"
「そうですね。長い時間、夢を見ずに寝ていた時のような、そんな時間が流れます」
"That's right. For a long time, like time passing by in a dream."

　記憶が無い。
So there's no memory of becoming trapped.
　ということは、やはり転移事件で、そのまま迷宮の中に転移してしまった形なのだろうか。
That means she must have been teleported directly into the crystal in the labyrinth.
　そうなる確率は低いはずだが……。
But something like that should be really unlikely...
　しかし、低くてもありうる。
However, it's still possible even if it's unlikely.
　テレポート後、壁の中にいる可能性はいつだってありうる。
After a teleport, there's always the possibility of ending up buried in a wall somewhere.

　ちゃんと転移魔法陣の入り口と出口を設定しておけば、ランダム転移なんてそう起こらないんだが……。
Well that shouldn't happen if the magic circles are properly linked, but that's not the case for random teleportation circles...
　あの転移事件は、本当に不意打ちだったからな。
That Metastasis Event really was a surprise attack.
　確か、ナナホシがこの世界に来た時の余波か何かだって話だが……。
If I remember correctly, it was caused because Nanahoshi was teleported to this world...

　まぁ、過ぎた事はどうしようもない。

　人族も、転移魔法陣を禁忌として扱わず、きちんと管理すればよかったのだ。
Even as a person who was wrapped up in that incident, I don't think teleportation magic should be treated as a taboo, as long as it's properly managed.
　そうすれば、混乱せずに、対処も早かったはずだ。
If it were properly studied and implemented, then it would have been possible to deal with a disaster like the Metastasis Event more quickly.

　神子の言葉で思考が戻る。
I returned from my thoughts at the Miko's words.
　ひとまず、ギースへの詰問は後にしよう。
For the time being, let's postpone Gisu's cross-examination.

「夢ですか？」
"A dream?"
「はい。夢です。彼女はぬいぐるみになったかのような感覚で過ごし始めます」
"Yes. A dream. In it, she had the sensation of being carried like a stuffed toy."

"... A stuffed toy."<Ref>Talhand carrying her out of the labyrinth for those that don't remember.</Ref>
「でも、幸せな夢です」
"Yes, it was a pleasant dream."

　そこで神子は、目を閉じた。
Then, the Miko closed her eyes.
　まぶたの裏に映る絵を見るかのように、滔々を語りだす。
As if she were describing images on the backs of her eyelids, she began to speak fluidly.

「見知らぬ家で、ゆったりと暮らす夢。
"She had a dream of living comfortably in a strange house.
　リーリャと一緒に、ひなたぼっこをしたり、庭の手入れをしたり」
Spending time with Lilia, basking in the sun, caring for the garden..."

　そこで、神子の口調に変化があった。
Then, the Miko's tone changed.
　彼女は、ゼニスのような口調でしゃべりだしたのだ。
She began speaking from Zenith's perspective.

「パウロは亡くなったけど、ルディはシルフィちゃんと結婚して子供が生まれて。
"Paul died, Rudy married Sylphy-chan and had a daughter.
　でもやっぱりあの人の息子なのね、ルディったら、ロキシーちゃん、エリスちゃんと、どんどん増やしていって、でも、シルフィちゃんも、みんな幸せそう。
But as I thought, Rudy brought home more women. First Roxy-chan, then Eris-chan... however, everyone, even Sylphy-chan, was happy.
　ノルンも文句を言いながらも、きちんと学校に通って、顔を会わせたら、ちゃんと「お母さんいってきます」って忘れず声を掛けてくれて。
Although Norn complained, she properly went to school and made friends, and she would never forget to say [Okaasan, see you later!].
　アイシャとは気が合うのよ。彼女は花が好きなの。私は林檎と水仙が好きだって言ったら、ゼニス様も？　って。
In the meantime I got along well with Aisha. She really seems to like flowers. She would casually chat with me about things like [So does Zenith-sama like apples and daffodils too?]
　お母さんって呼んでくれてもいいのにって言ったら、リーリャが困った顔をしたわ。やっぱり彼女も、アイシャに対してはお母さんでいたいのね。
I think it would be fine if she called me Okaasan too, but then Lilia would make a troubled face. Aisha is still sensitive about that topic.
　ロキシーちゃんは、うちの近くの学校で教師をしているの。
Roxy-chan has started teaching at a school near the house.
　とても人気の教師なんだって、ノルンが教えてくれたわ。
According to Norn, she's a very popular teacher.
　あの子も、魔族だからいい年なのだろうけど……でも、ルディはロキシーちゃんの事が大好きだったから、年齢なんて関係ないのかしら。
Even though she still looks like a child, she's from a demon race that doesn't age quickly and has already lived for many years... But, Rudy loves Roxy-chan very much, so age doesn't matter.
　エリスちゃんとは初めてあったけど、とってもルディが好きなのが伝わってくるわ。
Then I met Eris-chan for the first time, she really loves Rudy as well.
　誰も見ていない所で、私の前にきて。顔を真っ赤にして、「ふつつか者ですが、よろしくお願いします」って。
When no one was looking, she came to me with a bright red face and said [I am still inexperienced, please treat me well!]
　私、思わず笑っちゃったの。それはルディの前で言わなきゃだめよって。私の前でそんなに畏まらなくても、いいのよって。
I couldn't help letting a smile out. I see why she didn't want to say that in front of Rudy; but being humble is good too.
　そしたら、エリスちゃんたら、顔を真っ赤にして縮こまっちゃってね。
Then, Eris-chan's face turned a deep red and she squeezed her arms.
　普段はあんなに勇ましいのに、すごく可愛いのよ」

　それは、この数年の記憶だ。
Those were her memories from the past several years.
　俺の記憶とは、少し違う。
But, I remember it slightly differently...
　ノルンがゼニスに声を掛けることは、殆ど無い。
Norn rarely called out to Zenith.
　アイシャは園芸の最中、ゼニスに話しかけても、答えることはない。
And even when Aisha talked with Zenith gardening, she never answered.

　でも、もしかすると、ゼニスの目からは……。
But, perhaps, from Zenith's perspective...
　みんなが返事して、自分も、会話をしているように見えているのだろうか。
She seemed to be engaged in everyone's conversations.

「それから、ルディの子供たち。
"And then, Rudy's children.
　ルーシーはおませさんなの。まだまだ小さいのに、お姉ちゃんじゃなきゃって思ってるのね。
Lucy is a precocious child. Though she's still small, she has to grow up to be a good Oneechan.
　シルフィちゃんの言うことを一生懸命聞いて、ルディに見てもらうために、毎日魔術の練習をしてるのよ。
Sylphy-chan has been working hard to teach her, practicing magic with her every day on Rudy's behalf.
　でもね、私の前では、ちょっと弱音を吐くの。お母さんたちみたいに、うまく出来ないって。がっかりしてるって。

The Miko rubbed her eyes and sighed.
　そして、先ほど座っていたイスに、崩れるように座った。
Then collapsed in her seat.

　即座に取り巻き連中が寄ってきた。
Her lackeys immediately went to her side.
　いつの間に用意したのか、蒸しタオルらしきものや、水の入ったコップ等が差し出される。
They gave her a cup of water and a hot towel, they must have prepared it beforehand.
　肩や腕を揉まれている。
Then massaged her shoulders and arms.
　大御所のような感じだ。
They're treating her just like an idol.

「申し訳ありませんが、ここまでです。いかがでしたか」
"I'm sorry, that was everything. Was it of any help?"

　神子はぐったりとしていた。
The Miko looked dead tired.
　あの能力は、それほど疲れるのだろうか。
Using her ability must be really exhausting.
　疲れるだろうな。
I'm worn out just from watching her.
　ゼニスの記憶をさかのぼり、その記憶を自分の脳へとダウンロード。
Reading all of Zenith's memories, and downloading them into her brain.
　一瞬で情景が頭のなかをめぐり、即興でゼニスの芝居が出来る。
Then watching an entire impromptu play of Zenith's life.
　そんな情報量が一瞬で流れこんでくるのだとしたら、そりゃ疲れるだろう。
With that much information being processed in an instant, of course it's tiring.

　俺も肩の一つもお揉みしたい。
I could also use a shoulder massage.<!--Either that or he'd give her a shoulder massage, can't tell.-->

「いえ、ありがとうございました」
"No, but thank you very much."

　ゼニスの治療方法はわからなかった。
I still don't know a method to treat Zenith.
　でも、ゼニスは今の状態になった後の気持ちはわかった。
But, I was able to understand Zenith's feelings.
　それが聞けただけでも、今回、ミリスに来たかいがあったというものだ。
That alone makes my trip to Milis worthwhile.

「少なくとも、彼女は今、幸せを感じています。
"At least I know that she's happy.
　パウロさんが死んだ事も、きちんと知っています。
And that she remembers Paul, and that he has passed away.
　現状を理解していますよ」
I understand her present condition now."

　確かに彼女は現状を理解していた。
Zenith understands what's happening around her.
　思っていた以上にしっかりと。
She has thoughts.
　少し夢っぽさが残っていたし、神子の口調のせいかメルヘンナイズドされていたが、子供の数なんかに矛盾は無い。
Although the Miko's tone made it seem as though she was in a dream-like state, there were no contradictions in facts like the number of children.
　子供の性格は……ララだけちょっと違うか。
Or their personalities... But Lara was slightly different.
　でも、確かにララはゼニスに懐いている。
Lara is certainly attached to Zenith.
　ゼニスの目から見ると、ララは何かを一生懸命伝えている……のかもしれない。
In Zenith's eyes, Lara might be trying to convey something with all her might... possibly.

「それからもう一つ、分かった事があります」
"I was also able to learn something else."
「……？」
"...?"
「彼女は……どこまでかわかりませんが、人の思考が読めるようです」
"She... I don't know how, but she seems to be able to read peoples thoughts."

　思考が読める？
Read thoughts?

「こんな状態なので、全ての思考を正しく読んでいるわけではないですし、読めなかった部分は勝手に補完しているようなのですが……」
"Because she's in such a state I may not be reading her memories correctly, but there's  something I have to tell you..."

　そこで、神子は声を潜めた。
The Miko said so in a hushed voice.
　俺にちょいちょいと手招きして、耳を貸すようにジェスチャする。
Then gestured to me to lend her my ear.
　取り巻きたちが即座に耳を塞ぎ、後ろを向いた。
Her lackeys behind her immediately covered their ears.

　俺は神子に耳を近づける。
I brought my ear close to the Miko.
　すると彼女は小さな声で言った。
Then, she spoke in a very quiet voice.

「彼女は『神子』です」
"She is a [Miko]."

　俺はその言葉に、ゆっくりと頷いた。
At those words, I nodded slowly.
　最初から、わかっていた事だ。
I suspected as much.
　呪いが掛かっている可能性が高い、と。
It was very likely she had some sort off curse.

「知られれば、また一騒動起きますので、隠しておくことをお勧めします」
"If this becomes known, it will cause an uproar, so I recommend you keep this hidden."
「無論です。ただ、俺もオルステッドの配下としてやってきた身です。守り切ります」
"Of course. I swear, as Orsted's subordinate, I will defend her."
「言い切るとは、さすがですね」
"Truly, as one would expect."

　まぁ、今回は誘拐されちゃったから、そう言っても空々しいかもしれんが。
Well, after letting her get kidnapped, I might be a hypocrite for saying that.
　そういう気持ちではやってるつもりだ。
But I intend to live on such a feeling.

　しかし、今回で二つの事が分かった。
However, I have learned two things.

　一つは、ゼニスの能力。
One, Zenith's ability.
　思考を読めるという能力。
The ability to read thoughts.
　どこまでかは判明していないが、少なくとも、死に直結するようなものではない。
It's still not clear, but at least it doesn't seem like an ability that could lead directly to her death.<!--Like Elinalise dying if she doesn't get laid.-->
　以後、安心していられるという事だ。
That gives me a sense of relief.

　もう一つは、ギースだ。
The other thing, Gisu.
　あいつの言ってる事に、少し齟齬がある。
There's a discrepancy in something he said.
　考えてみれば、今回の一件、あいつの動きはどうにも妙だった。
Come to think of it, that guy's movements have been strange throughout this entire mess.
　ラトレイア家が魔族排斥派だと知っているにも関わらず、近寄ったり、言われるがままゼニスを連れだしたり。
Despite knowing the Latreia house is part of the Expulsion Faction, he approached them, then took Zenith out.
　今日中にでも、問い詰めなければいけない。
I'll have to question him thoroughly.

「神子様、あなたと会えてよかった。何か、お礼をしなければいけませんね」
"Miko-sama, I am very glad that we were able to meet. There must be something I can do as thanks."

　記憶を取り戻すというか、正気に戻す方法はわからなかった。
I still don't know how to cure Zenith.
　だが、思っていた以上に状態は悪くないように思える。
But, she seems to be in a better state than I thought.

　意識があるというのなら。
She is conscious.
　夢を見ているような感覚だというのなら。
Even if it's a feeling like watching a dream.
　あるいは、ここから先、ふと目が覚める事もあるかもしれない。
Perhaps she might suddenly wake up.

「ありがとうございます。では二つほど、よろしいですか？」
"Thank you. Then there are two things, is that okay?"
「なんでしょう」
"What can I do for you?"
「その腕輪をくださいませんか？」
"Could I have that bracelet?"

　俺は己の腕を見る。

　そこには、オルステッドの腕輪が輝いていた。
There, Orsted's bracelet was shining.

"Yes."
「……でも、この腕輪は外せないもので、他のものではいけませんか？」
"... But, this bracelet is not something I can remove, and it wouldn't have any use to you?"
「構いません。オルステッド様の配下と、一目でわかるようなものなら、なんでも」
"It doesn't matter. People already know you are working for Orsted-sama at a glance."

　オルステッドの配下とわかるようなもの。
I'm already identified as Orsted's subordinate pretty much everywhere.
　というと、つまり。
So, in other words...

「神子様も、オルステッド様に傘下に加わりたいと？」
"Miko-sama, do you also want to join Orsted Co.?"
「はい。私も３０になる前に死んでしまうのは、嫌ですからね」

　そういえば、彼女の運命は弱いという話だった。

　今回は彼女にも世話になった。
I need to repay her for her help properly.
　後日、龍神のマークの入った証だけでなく、守護魔獣でも召喚してあげるとしよう。
I'll get her something with the Dragon God's crest, I'll even throw in a free guardian beast summoning.

「もう一つは？」
"And your other request?"
「テレーズの減刑をお願いします。このままだと彼女は、また遠くに左遷させられてしまうでしょう」
"Please commute Therese's sentence. As it is, she'll be demoted and sent far away."
「それは、仕方ないのでは？」
"But, it can't be helped?"

　命令には従ったけど、遂行しきれなかったわけだし。
Although she was just carrying out her orders, she failed to protect you.

「ええ、それは。でも今回、彼女がルーデウス様に敗北した事で、枢機卿猊下も痛手を被りました。遠くに飛ばされたら、殺されてしまいます。私、護衛はあの人がいいんです」
"Eh, well... Because she was defeated by Rudeus, the Cardinal suffered a hard blow. If she's sent away, she may end up being killed. And she was always a kind-hearted guard."

　役立たずに用はない。
She's already served her purpose.
　と、枢機卿派が腹いせのようにテレーズを殺してもおかしくはないか。
If the Cardinal's faction killed Therese as revenge, that wouldn't be funny.

　最終的に彼女はああいう形にはなってしまったが……。
Even though it turned out like this...
　それでも、それまでで世話になったのは確かだ。
She's still someone I'm indebted to.
　彼女も利用されただけ、命令を聞いただけなら、殺されるのはやり過ぎだろう。
She was used too, she had to follow her orders, being killed for something like that is too much.

"Okay."
「ありがとうございます。では嘆願書にサインを」

　すぐに取り巻きの一人が書類を持ってやってきた。
One of her lackeys immediately produced official-looking documents.
　用意がいいな。

　最初からそのつもりだったか。

　いくらゼニスのためとはいえ、あの治療法はやりすぎだ。

　もしやってたら、俺だってこんな所で呑気に話なんて聞いてない。
After all this, I don't want to have a carefree chat about it in a place like this.

「なので、罰を与えてください」
"So, please give me penance."
「罰ですか……？」

「そう、罰です。あなたからゼニスを奪い、非道な行いをしようとした者に、相応の罰を」
"Yes, penance. I took Zenith away from you, and tried to do something awful, such a crime requires a suitable punishment."
「謝罪だけでは、済みませんか？」

"Such a thing is not enough. The punishment must fit the crime."

　言わんとする事はわかる。
I can understand that.
　要するに、謝って済むなら警察はいらない、ってことだ。
If everything could be settled with an apology, the police would be unnecessary.
　今回の事件に関して、関係者は大体罰を受けることになった。
In an incident like this, the perpetrator would normally receive severe corporal punishment.
　でも、クレアはお咎め無しだ。
But, I don't blame Claire.
　それでは、クレアの気が済まないのだろう。
Even though Claire might not be satisfied with that.

「……どんな罰がいいと思いますか？」
"... What kind of punishment would be fitting?"
「ムチや棒で打つも良し、両腕を切り落とすのも良し……いっそ殺してくださっても構いません」

「先ほどのゼニスの話を聞いて、私がいかに一人よがりで自分勝手な振る舞いをしていたか、よくわかったでしょう？　赤子のように懐いている娘を、地獄に突き落とそうとしたのです。情けはいりません、愚かなる者には裁きの鉄槌が必要です」
"After listening to Zenith's story, how could I act so selfishly? Even considering doing something like that to my own daughter, I deserve to burn in hell. Such a stupid person only deserves the hammer of judgment."

　彼女は拳をぶるぶると震わせていた。
Her fist was trembling.

　先ほどの話、彼女はそう捉えたか。
Were we listening to the same story?
　でも、俺の耳には、そうは聞こえなかった。
I never heard such a thing.
　もっと別の形に聞こえた。
I heard something else.

　ゼニスは許してたんだ。
Zenith forgave her.
　自分が何をされるのか、理解していなかったと思う。
I didn't understand it at the time.
　でも、彼女はクレアの苦悩を感じ取っていた。
But, she could sense Claire's anguish.
　己のためだとちゃんと理解していた。
Now I properly understood.
　だからクレアが、あの裁判の場で、周囲に味方もなく、一人で泥を被ろうとした時点で、許したのだ。
Claire, at that trial, without a single ally, trying to bear the brunt of the blame yourself, you were forgiven.
　だから、ゼニスはあの場で、俺とカーライルを叩いて、クレアを叩かなかった。
That's why Zenith slapped Carlyle and I, but didn't slap Claire.

　ってのは、ちょっとこじつけがすぎるな。
