  1. This rant talks about spoilers for Dragon Ball Super, covering the entire Tournament of Power arc, including the ending. Listen at your discretion. You have been warned.
  2.
  3. So about a couple of weeks back, Dragon Ball Super episode 103 aired stateside, and we know how this is where Universe 10 gets eliminated, and thus Mr. Lucifer analogue got his points vindicated with Universe 10's placing showing that they did indeed suck and die in general, Koos is a show of how being part of the erasure is not needed for somebody to suffer a tragedy, etc. I could go into a comment about this event that would have its word count get Vegeta to break his scouter yet again, but nah, FUNimation wanted to be stupid, so the same episode decided to have the dub change a line to be objectifying to females.
  4.
  5. In the original version, when Jimiz arrived to bail out Ribrianne and Rosie, he simply said, and I quote: "Maidens, let us retreat." I will grant that coming across as boring, but it would fit with Jimiz being stoic, which would fit with Japan, at least apparently, favoring stoicism, especially when it's going to involve a knight motif with a guy who amounts to being a Fragile Speedster. The English version decided to, what else, spice it up. But hey, while subtlety IS something the dub could stand to be more watchful with, it does at least have some points about when nuances are either too opaque like Universe 9 Hop's selfishness, or just laughably ineffective like the Maiden Squadron's Moral Myopia getting to the point where Android 17's believe me added snark about it was actually very welcome. So what's the absolutely sparkling gem we get for Jimiz's dub line?
  6.
  7. The line is, and I quote: "take my hand, ladies, let me steal you away."
  8.
  9. .....steal.....no. Just....no. So the dub is implying that what knights do to women is just plain objectify them and turn them into trophies to fight over? Why? Wouldn't it be better to expect females to be, you know? Awesome PEOPLE? Hey, here's a line that would be MUCH better: "maidens, shall we depart together?" THERE! Something that still fits the knight motif and doesn't exceed 10 syllables, but ACTUALLY INVOLVES CONSENT VIA A NON-OBJECTIFYING QUESTION, HOWEVER RHETORICAL. Really, it wouldn't take much effort to come up with a better line.
  10.
  11. Really, what about tropes like Back-To-Back, or even Battle Couple? You know: tropes where BOTH genders win, not just the one that has a track record of focusing on the mind more than the body in comparison. For crying out loud, the Maiden Squadron's 2 remaining members being cornered is because they had just fought tooth and nail against Goku and 17 at that point. Yet the dub exploits how Ribrianne and Rosie throw hearts at Jimiz. And that's another thing: I have of course seen the sub, so I can tell you how Ribrianne and Rosie already prove shallow enough to need a major dose of humility, and fortunately, they get theirs. And by the way, I couldn't help but notice that they in their Moral Myopia spend episode 103 starkly contrasting Gohan, who took out Obuni with little in the way of choice while seeing evidence after evidence of Obuni being an honorable family man who had simply ended up the lynchpin of Universe 10.
  12.
  13. Jimiz, however, only has to put up with running afoul of Freeza, the guy who is supposed to be a HATE SINK SADIST. Really, at least what happened to Roselle of Universe 9 was Actually Pretty Funny simply because of the jumpcut from Goku and Vegeta's overcoming their adversities to Freeza's ease of how he was handling his target while the music remain unchanged. Jimiz's pain against Freeza, however, is supposed to be a stark reminder that sadism is sadism, and the dub making him into a philanderer is going to make Freeza's cruelty toward him fall flat on its face.
  14.
  15. Oh but wait, I forgot about the point of karma itself. Actually, that's yet ANOTHER thing, and of course, this delves into THE spoiler, even if it proves, SORT OF, to be The Untwist. What else will I bring up, but the Universe Restoration wish. The whole point is that any decent in their right mind would want to do it realizing that enemies can very easily be just as human as us too. And yes, I realize what I say given the actual twist. The dub decided to cheapen that by making Jimiz into an automaton by his own choice, the sort who would outright just call the Genki Girl an idiot behind her back at that as I actually witnessed in real life. Basically just another bite of target practice getting his lumps. Jimiz's personality wasn't deep in the sub either, but at least there, his treatment of the Maiden Squadron was inoffensive, so we could get the feeling that he was an okay guy just turned into another Chess piece to remove from play in order to nab the King. Or Queen as the case may be, although the Queen is simply the strongest singular ally instead of the primary objective in Chess itself. But either way, the Tournament of Power isn't some simple Chess match, the stakes alone proving as much if you're wondering my point with the analogy.
  16.
  17. This gets even more glaring in light of the Vic Mignogna situation, because FUNimation, the company behind the show's dub, had gone and thrown about accusations toward Vic Mignogna of being less than honorable toward the opposite sex. The accusations are, of course, unproven and show signs of being lies, and meanwhile, FUNimation's mooks had decided to also bash on fans, commit fake SWATtings, and other such nonsense. Even if Vic Mignogna could be guilty, he hadn't been given due process, and he sure as HFIL is going through the very problems I've lived in fear of, the damage done when it's proven that females can and will throw about false accusations exploiting how society has problems with being gynocentric beyond belief. FUNimation, meanwhile, ends up showing absolute disregard to the morality showcased by the Tournament of Power's ending, where Android 17, a proven pragmatist who had literally been designed to be a Hero Killer, would CHOOSE to restore the Universes, well after stating that he'd consider using the Super Dragon Balls for a freaking boat ride, for his family or no. And yes, that it's 17, not Goku, who would get to make the wish, makes a surprising difference in showing the art behind the whole concept. Of course, when we have the likes of Sean Schemmel throwing about abusive treatment of fans in the name of their inner circle, that's the Most Triumphant Example of Nice Character Mean Actor, and it particularly hurts when the Tournament of Power's In Universe purpose was a Secret Test Of Character to us mortals with the penalty of failure by the MVP being myopic or some such with the ultimate game changer being full cosmos erasure.
  18.
  19. Now of course, that the dub turned Jimiz into a casanova wouldn't be QUITE enough to warrant a rant video on its own. No, what pushes it into that, is moderator response to what I ranted about with the mess on a Toonami forum. I had made a nice post about this farce, no spoilers due to the forum's policy of course. Unfortunately, it got deleted because I was, inevitably due to FUNimation's double standards, talking about the Vic Mignogna situation and thus it was claimed to be "flamebaiting" as the responsible moderator herself had put it. I would expect if people go on a Toonami forum they could be mature enough to handle discussion about the whole mess, not be tempted enough to respond with mindless bashing. Not seeing it coming was admittedly on me given the other users would make more generally gynocentric posts there too without problem, but the real problem is STILL those other users for being the sorts who make you walk on eggshells with gender talk getting all the way to the point of random insults screaming the What Measure Is A Non-Badass trope. The only way I'd have been flamebaiting would have been toward users who want to overfavor females to begin with. Look, I get it, users: Japan has a track record of Innocently Insensitive, and they don't show signs of stopping any time soon. Still, ignoring the nonsense that females themselves pull doesn't help your case.
  20.
  21. Speaking of not helping their case, you might have noticed when I talked about the moderator that I used a female pronoun to describe her. Yes, the moderator is female, and moreover, she's somebody who had proven irked by objectification of females. That'd be perfectly valid if it was handled rationally, but deleting the post tearing at dub Jimiz's casanova behavior is going to come across as hypocritical. The excuse that I brought up Vic Mignogna has the problem that it's impossible to say much about the dub-added objectifying without saying SOMETHING about the exact opposite problem from mistreatment of females, let alone when FUNimation is going to push bad messages. If anybody thinks otherwise, then prove as much, but just remember that Jimiz wasn't chauvinistic in the sub.
  22.
  23. This is even worse because this was within the forum's thread for the episode itself, and there, I had posted my length post about Universe 10's elimination/erasure, which spanned about 9700 words in total, and about 3400 of that went to Koos thanks to her Break The Cutie moment that is every single bit as shocking as I implied. Yes, Koos. Not Zamus, the Lucifer analogue who works as the definition of Villain Has A Point. Not Gowas, the Woobie who mostly had his problem be needlessly confusing to a protoge who like some kid would consider justice to be a weapon instead of a scale. And not even Rumoosh, the idiot who thought more muscle was somehow going to overcome the likes of a combat specialist capable of taking on deities. I'm referring to a bit character who I'm only noting after about maybe 4 scenes, all of which her input was pretty much flavor. Koos being the Sole Survivor for Universe 10 just shows that tragedy doesn't require the person to die from it to be a tragedy. And of course, I talked about why it's frustrating when you see a problem like seeing a vibrant female lose any reason to ever be the same coming a mile away, only to be unable to do ANYTHING about it. The most I get about it, really, is vague hostility from one other user for being "overanalytical." Because God, or All King as the case may be, forbid I would talk about the concept of art as the failing area of Universe 3 once they eventually get eliminated, no matter how welcome it is that they get on the podium at all. It's obvious I'm against treating females like jokes where they don't deserve it. Why is this point ignored to get rid of one of my length posts?
  24.
  25. Of course, this same moderator in the past had removed another of my posts in the past over a SINGLE word. I wish I was exaggerating, and the clincher was, the word's usage amounted to being a Precision F Strike in light of what happened over incidents like EVO 2018. And you know: I could have easily changed up the post too if it was that bothersome. I had already proved as much in the past with a post that initially had Iron Blooded Orphans' ending not spoiler tagged in a thread that wasn't about Iron Blooded Orphans, before a user kindly suggested I fix that and I complied. I did something similar with my Universe 10 elimination/erasure length post because it had eaten through literally 70% of the page it was on. But here I am being treated as the enemy anyway, because people don't really care about the truth. The problem was stupid enough that I showed my outrage on the forum's Discord and then stormed off of the forum and its Discord with no intent to look back. I may practically be feeling some withdrawal symptoms, but I think I had quit while I was ahead at this point, especially when I know how Universes 2 and 6 are next on the chopping block and both have significant involvement of females so things would all too likely have become even uglier with how rooted in the gynocentrism is there.
  26.
  27. But hey, I must be talking out my rear, because it's not like females could ever be abusi-
  28.
  29. ......NEVER MIND!
  30.
  31.
  32.
  33. Really, it just impresses me how seeped in God awful double standards people will get. What I just complained about isn't the worst case of forum moderation ever, not by a long shot. But the post deletion is still absolutely intemperate. I for one am supposed to believe that females would have compassion, a concept that BOTH genders can benefit from learning about, and we'd expect females to be better about it. Now I'm asking as I've actually been for years, certainly well before the #MeToo Movement was even given a name: who watches the watchmen? Because I know that the materialistic backstabbing ventures and general apathy are not compassion at all. They're just arrogant exploitation of an otherwise legitimate problem. That sounds familiar, actually, almost like Dragon Ball Super could say why in fact. And really, the end result is going to be the same: that nobody wins, except any bad guys when they're "proven" right, and I don't know about you but I'd rather not see more standing messages to guys to treat gals like mere property.
