  1. >No seriously, what is this game?
  2. It's a third person shooter with ARPG/Roguelike level generation and character progression.
  3.
  4. >How does it work?
  5. When you start a new game a random seed generates your campaign. There is a linear story progression with specific mandatory bosses but everything in between is filled with semi-randomized levels, bosses and gear.
  6.
  7. >So it's a loot shooter?
  8. No, unlike Destiny or The Division every item in RftA is unique which means gear progression doesn't revolve around finding better versions of weapons you already have, the locations and how you acquire them are partially randomized and some of them are only obtainable through specific bosses. In that sense it has some similarities to certain roguelikes where you primarily improve your character through unique item pick-ups but there is still a skill system that allows you to manually assign points to traits.
  9.
  10. >If it's like a roguelike does it have permadeath?
  11. No. As of right now the similarities only pertain to how levels are generated and how you acquire your gear.
  12.
  13. >How replayable is it?
  14. There are bosses and optional areas that you will not see in a regular playthrough. Each area has a boss-pool with their own unique items generated by your seed. However, you can reroll your campaign and keep your character progression whenever you want which is essentially like starting new game+. Rerolling also allows you to increase your campaign's difficulty with the added benefit of higher exp gain. You can also join other people's worlds in coop if they have access to bosses in their seed that you don't have. It has decent replayability and build variety although don't expect this to match the content of games with similar gameplay loops. Continuous content updates are planned according to the developer.
  15.
  16. >If you can just reroll your campaign how does the game stay challenging if you keep your character progression?
  17. If you enter a new area it will scale the content to your average gear score plus one. For example, if your gear score is 5 then the area will be adjusted to match gear score 6.
  18.
  19. >What's even the point in upgrading my gear if enemies will always scale with me?
  20. Once you entered an area that area will always stay at that gear score until you reroll the campaign or start new game+. The scaling only happens when you enter an area for the first time. Also, the maximum gear score is currently 20 and enemies don't scale with your traits. The area adjusting to your gear score is only there so the game can still provide a decent challenge to a player who constantly rerolls their campaign and to keep powerfarming in check, although the system has some issues in multiplayer when people with significant gear score gaps play in the same session since the area will try to adjust itself to the player with the highest average gear score.
