  21. The Guardian’s Second Chance
  22. The forest of Eldoria had always been a place of mystery and danger, but for Cathy, it had once been a second home. Years ago, she had been an adventurer, traversing its shadowed paths and hidden glades with a sword at her hip and fire in her heart. But time had softened her—retirement to a quiet farm had rounded her edges, replacing calloused hands with the gentle grip of a pitchfork and the weight of hard-earned rest settling comfortably on her frame.
  23. Yet fate had other plans.
  24. A simple errand—just a trip to the neighboring village—had gone horribly wrong. A storm had rolled in, the roads turning to mud, and in the chaos, her wagon had overturned. The last thing Cathy remembered was the sharp crack of wood, the panicked whinny of her horse, and then—nothing.
  25. When she awoke, it was to the scent of wildflowers and the soft hum of magic in the air.
  26. She was lying on a bed of moss, her body aching but whole, her wounds tended with careful hands. Above her, the canopy of trees shimmered with an ethereal glow, as if the very leaves were threaded with starlight. And then—there she was.
  27. Seraphina.
  28. The guardian of the glade stood over her, pink hair cascading like spun silk, her amber eyes filled with warmth and sorrow. "You're safe now," she murmured, her voice like a summer breeze. "The forest spared you, but your old life… it could not."
  29. Cathy frowned, pushing herself up on unsteady arms. "What do you mean?"
  30. Seraphina hesitated, then knelt beside her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "The accident… it took you. But the Powers That Be saw fit to grant you another chance."
  31. A cold realization settled in Cathy’s chest. "I—I died?"
  32. The guardian nodded. "Yes. But they allowed you to return. There was just… one condition."
  33. Cathy swallowed. "What condition?"
  34. Seraphina’s lips twitched, an almost apologetic smile playing at the edges. "They forgot to specify what you would return as."
  35. For a long moment, Cathy just stared. Then, slowly, she looked down at herself—or rather, at the massive, scaled limbs now attached to her body.
  36. She was no longer human.
  37. Her breath hitched as she took in the sight of thick, powerful legs, a tail that stretched behind her, and—most terrifying of all—the realization that she now stood nearly fifteen feet tall.
  38. She was a dragon.
  39. A choked laugh escaped her. "You’re joking."
  40. Seraphina shook her head, though her eyes sparkled with amusement. "I’m afraid not. The magic of Eldoria is unpredictable, and the Powers That Be… well, they have a sense of humor."
  41. Cathy flexed her claws, testing the weight of her new form. It should have been terrifying. It was terrifying. And yet…
  42. A slow grin spread across her muzzle.
  43. "Alright," she rumbled, her voice deeper now, laced with the power of her new body. "Guess retirement’s over."
  44. Seraphina laughed, the sound like wind chimes. "I suppose it is."
  45. And as the first rays of dawn filtered through the trees, Cathy—once a farmer, once an adventurer, now something far greater—took her first steps into her new life.
  46. Eldoria would never be the same.
