For linux, Inotify can help you detect file modifications. You can monitor changes under a specific directory or optionally monitor recursively. You can write a script and automate for specific events.


For example, you can detect if a file was written(which could be modify or create) and after x interval trigger a backup. Useful for Continuous Data Protection like backup services.

You could also write a small script to hash the files in the directory at an interval and report somehow perhaps mail if one of them changes from original value.
