After Merlin had put the young lady back in the bed from which he had taken her, he went back to his own bed and lay down. Then he undid his spell and everyone in the castle awoke, and it was already quite late. So the squires and the serving men got up, put on their armor, saddled their horses, and packed up chests and trunks. And Merlin came straight to King Ban, who was still asleep. The spell that made him fall in love with the young lady had been broken; he was well aware that he had lain with her, but he did not know how it had happened, although he did believe that it had been brought about by Merlin.
