- An Island Called Despair
- ---
- Desmond’s head felt dull as he came to. Looking around, he saw he was in an unfamiliar room.
- “W-Where am I?”
- Judging from the sound, it appeared he was on a boat.
- “Oh, you’ve woken up.”
- He quickly turned his head to see a strange girl sitting near a window, her focus almost entirely on the laptop on a small desk. She looked rather shabby, with messy hair, bags under her eyes, black beanie, and a long black shirt with the shoulder parts of the sleeves cut.
- “W-Who are you?” He asked,
- “Name’s Neme. You seem to be a new face.”
- “New face?”
- “Yeah.” The girl reached off to her side and pulled out a pamphlet, her attention still on the laptop. “Go ahead and check this out if you want.”
- Hesitantly, Desmond got off from the bed he had been lying on, and took the pamphlet.
- “Huh…’Welcome to your home away from home. The island of Nobad is where you can come to relax after working hard with your Creator.’ Creator?!”
- “Yeah, the guy that’s made your life hell. Remember him?”
- The boy could vaguely recall a strange voice that seemed to state that his life would be full of suffering.
- “Sorta.”
- The girl chuckled, “Well, this place we’re going to is like a vacation home, where we can rest before he makes us suffer again.”
- “O-Oh.”
- “You’ll find out more about it once we get there.”
- For the first time since they started talking, the girl looked at Desmond, then giggled, “Believe me, you’re going to find this place to be a godsend.”
- Desmond swallowed hard.
- ----
- As the boar prepared to make landing, Desmond looked around the small crowd that seemed to form on the deck of the ship. Most of them he didn’t recognize, but one…
- “D-Devon!”
- The youth in question was tackled to the ground, his little brother sobbing into his shoulder.
- “I-I can’t believe it….y-you’re ok….”
- The young man hesitantly moved the boy off of him as he sat up.
- “Umm, I’m sorry, but…do I know you?”
- “What do you mean?!” Desmond cried, “I-I’m your little brother!”
- Devon looked at his father, who seemed to try and avoid his gaze,
- “Well, that explains why he looks like my spitting image.” The man said, embarrassment in his tone.
- “I didn’t know I had a brother.”
- “Well, we considered having a second child, but after you got really sick during your 4th birthday, we decided not to. I guess wherever this boy comes from, that incident never happened.”
- Desmond looked at Devon, tears still in his eyes, “S-Someone took you from us in my world, so this is the first time I’ve ever seen you.”
- “Wait, if this is the first time you’ve seen me, how did you know who I am?”
- Desmond blushed a bit, “I guess you can say it’s a brother’s intuition.”
- Before the two could talk anymore, the boat let out a loud horn, signaling its arrival.
