Polygon 2012 Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony Reviews Analysis

  1. Analysis of Polygon Reviews from 2012 Regarding Games Published or Developed by Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony.

  4. Criteria:
  5. 1. Only titles with US releases were included.
  6. 2. Only titles published or developed by Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony were included.
  7. 3. Cross-platform titles were excluded unless there was a long period of exclusivity. Explanations are included for these.
  8. 4. Even if a game was later released on other consoles, only their state in 2012 is considered.
  9. 5. Only titles in 2012 and from the date of Microsoft's first published game on Polygon were considered. This is to provide an advantage to Microsoft due to possible bias on my part.
  10. 6. I may revise this later to include third party exclusives (third party published games exclusive to Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony) in the future. Those were excluded to provide a generous playing field for Microsoft due to the large amount of Wii third party exclusives in 2012 that were not reviewed by Polygon. Microsoft did not rely on third party exclusives. (This would only provide further disadvantage to Microsoft if included)
  11. 7. Even though Polygon did not launch until October 2012 and was a part of The Verge before then, I set the beginning timetable to be the first Microsoft published / developed game that is reviewed and listed on Polygon.
  12. 8. I did not see any Microsoft game reviews that were PC only, but they would have been excluded anyway due to the fact that neither Nintendo nor Sony have a PC only line.
  13. 9. Even though some Vita titles were on mulitiple Sony consoles, if they were only on the Vita handheld in 2012 - they were counted as Vita titles.

  24. Conclusions:
  25. 48% of "all" the games published by Microsoft were reviewed by Polygon in 2012, 24.2% for Nintendo and 27% for Sony. The average scores are Microsoft with the lowest at 6.25, Nintendo higher at 7.25 and Sony the highest with 8.4. When the reviews for games published by Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony are combined into one figure, Microsoft accounts for 47% of those reviews, Nintendo the lowest at 23.5%, and Sony in the middle with 29.4% (16, 8, 10). Among Nintendo titles, no Nintendo published titles for the Wii were reviewed in 2012. 17 published titles by Microsoft were not reviewed by Polygon in 2012, 11 from Nintendo and finally 27 from Sony (When including Vita titles, apps, along with PS3 Sony published titles).
