  1. Antarctica is a large (big) continent (a large piece of land) located at the far south of the world. It is larger than Europe. The weather (what it feels like outside) there is very cold. About 98% of Antarctica is covered with snow and ice (water that is solid). This means that it is mostly white. Very few people live there, except in the small towns of McMurdo and Palmer on the coast (the beach). There is a science station (town with science people) at the South Pole where experiments (trying different things) are done. These experiments have to do with the weather and outer space stuff.
  2. People who want to go to Antarctica most of the time go there in something that flies, like an Airplane (a thing that flies because of Bernoulli's princple). But you (collective) can take a boat (a thing on the water because of Archimedes' principle) to visit the continent. Boats can leave from Australia (also a continent and it has kangaroos), New Zealand (an island near Australia), Argentina (A country in South America).
  3. Antarctica is the only continent with no countries (people who decide to give up some freedom (being able to do what ever you want) for other freedoms) in it. By international (between other countries) treaty (another word for agreement), none of the land (not covered in water) in Antarctica belongs to any country.
  4. There are very few plants in Antarctica; the only large air breathing animals are penguins (a type of bird that doesnt fly), seals and whales (mammals). There are no polar bears (white bears that live at the north pole) living in Antarctica.
  5. Antarctica is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean, but the seas right around it are also called the Southern Ocean. The nearest continent is South America.
  6. In Antarctica, it is always dark (no light) during the winter, but in the summer the sun (the thing in the sky that makes light) shines 24 (two times the number ten, plus four more) hours a day.
  7. There is one volcano (mountain of fire) in Antarctica. It is named Mount Erebus. Mount Erebus is very high and sometimes hot.
