  1. “The meeting of the Paranormal Investigation Club is now in session.” a girl with glasses and long, braided green hair, who sat at the front of the table formation, proclaimed. She pushed an open hand against the top of her chest. “Though absent I may have been, the one to take the lead will be as usual I, your dear club president, Kuroko Utsuro.”
  2.
  3. “First order of business: Reportedly there has been a string of students feeling weak and under the weather, a regular cold or is there more to it?” she said, pointing at the first club member that fell under her gaze. “Go!”
  4.
  5. “Ehm… they are feeling under the weather?” the club member responded, having paid just enough attention to be able to consider what she just asked.
  6.
  7. Kuroko put a hand to her face, lightly shaking her head.
  8. “Anyone else?” she asked into the group as she looked around the room. “No? Figures.”
  9.
  10. “Second order of business: Marina has a boyfriend now, huh?” she said, putting on a grin and getting a laugh out of a bunch of club members, while one of the girls sunk back into her chair and blushed.
  11.
  12. “It’s not like that… It’s nothing serious yet!” Marina said, hiding half of her face beneath the edge of the table. “Why are you always like this, pres?”
  13.
  14. Kuroko shrugged innocently. “Well, if the members of my club don’t do their work properly anymore I have to investigate what’s keeping them, don’t I?” Some more snickers followed and the members seemed to be actually focusing more on the club meeting now.
  15.
  16. That’s how the meeting went on. Kuroko talked with the club members about recent happenings at the school and rumors that could be of relevance to them. More than once she leaned back and let out a sigh when inevitably the Demon Hunter Club was mentioned and that, while she was gone, her club handed over some investigations to them, when those became too much for them.
  17.
  18. Then the club meeting was over. When most of the club members had left or were in the process of leaving, Kuroko turned to Marina once more.
  19. “So what’s he like?” she asked with a friendly smile, looking at the girl with tired but attentive eyes.
  20.
  21. “Well, don’t freak out, pres, but he is actually a member of the Demon Hunter Club and he is so cool! His name is Asai.” Marina responded, now way more open and excited to talk about it than in the middle of the club meeting.
  22.
  23. “The one who took over those investigations?” Kuroko tilted her head, staring off into nothing as she thought.
  24.
  25. Marina sighed. “I knew you wouldn’t like that, pres, but there was some pretty weird stuff going on while you were gone and he has been super helpful.”
  26. The edges of Kuroko’s mouth curled into a smile again. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound ungrateful… and anyway, I’m happy for you.”
  27.
  28. “I… I know. It’s good that you’re back, pres.” Marina said after she had packed her stuff and got up to leave. “See you around! Oh, and don’t forget to take a break once in a while, yea?”
  29. Then she closed the door behind her and was gone. The club president sighed, rubbing her eyes.
  30.
  31. Over the next few days Kuroko investigated the students that got sick. After a bit of asking around and even talking to some of them personally, she found out that most of the time it was only one student that got sick like this at a time, two at most, and always girls.
  32. None of them were able to point to a specific event that could’ve caused them to end up like this - No rain shower or contact with another sick person, it was always “suddenly”. It was all too strange, but there was also no real lead to follow.
  33.
  34. After the next club meeting Kuroko spotted a little envelope held shut by a heart sticker sticking out of Marina’s bag and took the chance to poke her teasingly into the side.
  35. “What’s this then? Nothing serious, hm?” she asked with a wide grin. “I think one of those shady Demon Hunters is about to steal away my precious, little Marina.”
  36.
  37. Marina giggled, winding her body away from Kuroko’s tickling fingers. “Hihihi!~ Heey, stop it, pres! I’m not gonna leave the club, I promise! It’s just… I-”
  38.
  39. “Ah, well, guess then I can make a little exception.” Kuroko finally stopped and leaned down to listen to her.
  40.
  41. “It’s just that I think it’s time for me to be brave and take my chance, you know! I told him that I found something interesting behind the school to investigate and then… then I’ll confess to him.” Marina explained. It was difficult for her to even say that out loud.
  42.
  43. Kuroko took her by both of her shoulders. “You can do it, Marina! You are part of the Paranormal Investigation Club, you are ready to face scarier things than this! And it’s not like it’s just coming from anyone, you two are already close, right?”
  44.
  45. “Eh? Y-yeah, we-” There was a knock on the door to the club room. “Oh, that must be him! I gotta go. Thanks, pres, you are the best!”
  46. She quickly got up, took her things and walked to the door to open it.
  47.
  48. This was the first time the club president saw that member of the Demon Hunter Club Marina was infatuated with. He was tall, pale and had long black hair. Marina, showing again when she was comfortable with someone, started talking about all kinds of things to him, while Kuroko just watched from the back of the club room.
  49. Eventually, as Marina kept going on and just moments before they left, the club president’s eyes met with those of the boy.
  50.
  51. Now alone in the club room, Kuroko's head swayed from one side to the other and she started whistling a little tune as her lips pulled into a thin smile.
  52.
  53. “What is it you wanted to show me, Marina?” Asai asked behind the school building, walking ahead of Marina. The girl stopped, fidgeting the envelope from her bag as Asai turned around towards her.
  54. “The truth is I… I really like you a lot, Asai-senpai! Please accept my feelings!” she blurted out with all her might and bowed down deeply to hide her bright red face while holding the letter towards him with outstretched arms.
  55.
  56. For a moment he did nothing as he looked at her. Then, without saying a word, he reached his hand out towards her. Past the letter, towards her head.
  57.
  58. “Kyaaa!~ Asai-senpai, how could you?! Don’t you already have Marina-chan?” a different voice broke the silence as the boy found his hand stopped and held by another. One that was reaching right out of the now open envelope.
  59.
  60. Asai hastily pulled his hand away and took a step back, causing Marina to stumble backwards and letting go of the letter, as somebody somehow emerged from it.
  61. There now stood a figure with light green hair bound to a long braid.
  62.
  63. “Wait, you are-... Who are you?” Asai asked, losing his previous calmness. “Marina, wait, I’ll-”
  64.
  65. “You should probably leave now, it’s not safe here.”, Kuroko interrupted him, turning her head to look at her, resulting in a scream as Marina looked back into a face of nothingness, that yet still smiled all the same. Then the member of the Paranormal Investigation Club took off running.
  66.
  67. “You won’t get away with this, monster!” Asai declared, pointing at the president.
  68.
  69. “Monster? Me?” Kuroko laughed. “Fah, I expected something a bit more fun from a member of the Demon Hunter Club - Where are the dramatic poses? The elaborate chants? But then again, something tells me that’s not what you are, despite all of those girls taking it for a fact.”
  70.
  71. With those words the presence of Asai seemed to shift, his hair growing even messier and his uniform becoming worn.
  72. “But you know what really tipped me off? I’m gone for a few days and suddenly Marina has a boy she wants to confess to and somehow I didn’t know that she was interested in someone in the first place.” Kuroko made a few casual steps off to the side and shrugged. “That just doesn’t add up, I mean, you listened to her, right? So what are you, some kinda ghost? Maybe an alien?”
  73.
  74. The being that called itself Azai grew increasingly irritated at her. “I understand now, fleshling. You are a gifted one. So allow me to state the obvious while I rid you of your miserable life force. I am a de-”
  75. The hands of the boy became rough and leathery as his nails lengthed and sharpened, before he suddenly leaped towards the president with a swipe.
  76. Kuroko evaded by a hair’s breadth by ducking behind the corner of the school building she had moved towards. Azai’s claws ripped through the stone as he chased after her. Only to suddenly find himself in one of the school’s long hallways.
  77.
  78. Whistling filled the new found quietness around him. The source was Kuroko, standing further down the strangely empty corridor. The demon was confused enough to stop in his tracks to rationalize the situation he found himself in.
  79. “Oh, you shouldn’t have done that. Don’t you know anything?” Kuroko gloated with a smug grin on her unreadable face, despite having made that same mistake once before herself. “Can you feel it? You just stepped over the boundary. I hate to sound like a cliche, but you and I are not so different, ghost boy.”
  80.
  81. Azai roared and rampaged down the hallway towards Kuroko without a second thought, who simply put one hand into her pocket in anticipation of it.
  82. The instant he reached her his left arm shot forward like a lance, but the club president side-stepped it once again with no room to spare. He followed up with his other claw at an equally inhuman speed. This time however, instead of dodging away, Kuroko stepped past the swing towards him and with one swift movement pulled her fist from her pocket and hit him square in the face.
  83.
  84. At first it seemed to have no effect, like hitting an iron statue, but then the demon flailed backwards, screaming in agony as a strange, still fuming branding became visible on his skin. “AAAAHH, WHAT IS THIS?!”
  85.
  86. Kuroko smiled, pulling back her fist that was wrapped in small chains with a multitude of different charms and trinkets attached to them. “Well, one of those was bound to have an effect on ghosts.”
  87.
  88. “I’M NOT A GHOST, YOU LITTLE-!” Azai now fully took on his demonic form, nothing more than shreds of his uniform hanging off his malformed body as dark spikes protruded from his gray skin and his face now a grimace of teeth and hellish eyes beneath blackened hair.
  89. And just this whirlwind of teeth, spike and claw now came towards the president of Paranormal Investigation Club faster and even more filled with destructive power than before.
  90.
  91. In a last ditch effort Kuroko threw herself towards a nearby open door as the demon scraped past her body into it, leaving painful reminders of her human nature as she pulled in air through her teeth, trying not to show what she felt.
  92. “I’M A DEMON!”, Azai let out a terrifying cry as he came to a momentary stop, now assured of his coming victory over his prey.
  93. To his surprise however the silence of this place was disturbed another time as the room was filled with students, who looked up from what they were doing as a clock on the wall softly ticked away.
  94.
  95. “Fine then, if that is how you want it, I will take the life force of these innocent students before I take yours!” he said accompanied by an ugly, demonic laugh. “You will be responsible for their screams so listen well!”
  96. Just then the bell rang to signal the end of school. And the students, who had remained strangely stoic in the presence of the huge demon, blinked their igniting eyes as their weapons clicked free.
  97.
  98. Outside there was now a different hallway and a small sign above the closing door read:
  99.
  100. “Demon Hunter Club”
  101.
  102. Kuroko waited just long enough for his death screams to set in, before she walked down the hallway, putting both hands behind her back and beginning to whistle another tune with a thin smile on her lips.
