- Assumptions Through Conformity
- In a World of Ideas, Lee A. Jacobus writes:
- Perhaps the most useful tool that one can use to understand the conflict between conformity and nonconformity is critical thinking.
- In order to understand Jacobus’ argument, there are three terms that must be defined that show us the basic logic in Jacobus’ statement. The first term to define is conformity, which is the agreement to an idea without a full understanding as to why one is following that idea. The idea of nonconformity is focused on the individual and one’s ability to challenge the collective’s idea. As stated in Jacobus’ argument critical thinking allows one to be able to think rationally about the conflict that is between conformity and nonconformity. This argument presented by Jacobus holds to be true and is able to explain how we may make mistakes in judgement. This is shown through examples of conflict of conformity and nonconformity in the secondary texts and how critical thinking is important to use as a tool when one may possibly conform to an idea. The film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest shows clears the conflict between conformity and nonconformity. Secondly, the text “The Ones Who Walk Away From the Omelas” presents how conformity may possibly be negative. Lastly, we can see “The Lottery” as an example of tradition, another form of conformity, and how it may be irrational. Using these ideas and examples makes Jacobus’ argument both valid and a good tool to learn from.
- Firstly, in the film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, it can be seen that there are many examples of the conflict between conformity and nonconformity through the main characters that are Mac and Nurse Ratched when mac chooses not to conform to the mini-society that is the hospital, which Nurse Ratched essentially controls. For example, Mac is able to display to us nonconformity when he wants watch the World Series, he challenges the conformity which is Nurse Ratched's schedule that everyone follows and ends up losing the vote casted twice. What is happening in this scene is that Mac does not want to conform to the schedule that is set by Nurse Ratched and tries to get the patients on his side, however Nurse Ratched shows an exercise of her power over the medical ward and essentially turns down this idea by the individual that is Mac. The above scene that has been described shows this conflict that is Mac and Nurse Ratched. This is an example of the conflict between conformity and nonconformity through the challenge of Mac against Nurse Ratched’s schedule. The above concept is able to relate to Jacobus’ argument, because of how Mac is able to think critically and challenge Nurse Ratched's schedule. Through these examples the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is able to clearly illustrate to us the dynamic between conformity and nonconformity.
- Secondly, the text “The Ones Who Walk Away From the Omelas” presents how conformity may possibly be negative through the foundation that hold up the utopian society.
- For example, when people are shown the child locked in the basement, they either choose to stay and conform to this idea or silently leave of somewhere. What is happening is that the citizens who see the child are in a predicament because their morals are challenged and they do not know if they should stay or leave the city.
