  1. Kythra blinked, and then broke into a massive grin. "Frisk..." He bowed his head a long moment, and fingered the chain around his neck again as he murmured something. Frisk's sharp ears picked up what sounded like, "Baruch atah, Adonai Elohenu, melekh ha-olam, shehecheyanu vekiymanu vehigi-anu lazman hazeh." When he was done, he slid his glasses down so his eyes could sparkle at Frisk over them. "You are a treasure, Frisk. You are welcome to show me you're happy in whatever way comes naturally. Crying because you're happy can't possibly be selfish."
  2. Frisk took a slow breath. "I know you're right."
  3. Kythra shook his head. "Chara's lucky to have someone like you to travel with. I really hope they appreciate you."
  4. Frisk smiled shyly. "They're helping me. And they call me 'Free' sometimes." They tilted their head. "Kythra? What was that thing you said?"
  5. Kythra smiled sheepishly. "Oh, that? A blessing, in thanks for getting the chance to meet you. Have you not heard Hebrew before?"
  6. Frisk gasped. "Not much, but... that means you're..."
  7. Kythra drew his chain out. "I did say there's a reason I should know that you've probably had a rough time." He shook his head. "I mean, technically I'm a convert, but." He paused. "I do probably have a smidgen of heritage, really. I have family in Salonika. But my parents weren't practicing or anything like that."
  8. Frisk leaned a little closer, staring at the brass six-pointed star that hung from the chain. "That's really important, huh?" they whispered.
  9. Kythra nodded. "You're right, it'd have to be to show up without me thinking about it." He shifted. "This was a gift to me from the rabbi who taught me and... well, when you convert, you're supposed to go before a group of three called a beit din, but all we had on the island was a single old synagogue and one rabbi who'd come by every few weeks to hold lessons and oversee services, especially for the holidays." He smiled sheepishly. "She seemed a little skeptical when an eight-year old who was a different gender pretty much every time she saw them said they wanted to convert, but after the first three times she would give me books and told me each time things to work on until the next time we met."
  10. Frisk smiled. "She didn't mind?"
  11. Kythra shrugged helplessly. "Honestly? I think my fluidity confused her to no end, but she did her best to roll with it. Thanks to a certain group neither of us needs or wants to mention, the island had so few of us anyway that I imagine she was just glad to hear someone actually wanting to join. And either way, believe me, it was miles better than how my classmates acted. I kept at it, and when I turned twelve she gave me this and told me that as far as she was concerned, I was one of her people, and if I wanted to make it official once I was thirteen she'd vouch for me any time." He scratched his cheek. "We were talking about taking a trip to the mainland to try and scrounge up a proper beit din there, but then I started chasing the rumors about Ebott, and, well..."
