38. A local scientist is often regarded as a failure until he invents a machine that can make food fall from the sky. But little does he know, that things are about to take a turn for the worst.
 39. A local scientist, (Bill Hader), has always been a failure, but when his town is stuck eating gross sardines, Flint wants to help the town so that they don't have to eat sardines anymore. So he invents a machine called The FLDSMDFR, (Flint Lockwood Diatomic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator), a machine that can turn water into food. And he sends it up into the atmosphere and makes food rain from the sky. But suddenly, things get out of hand when The FLDSMDFR creates dangerous food storms. It's up to Flint to stop The FLDSMDFR before it turns the world into a monstrous Foodtopia.
 40. In all honesty I wasn't expecting much when going to see this movie. My lack of anticipation was most probably due to the movies trailer and how storyless it presented this movie as being. I was perhaps expecting something along the lines of 'Bee movie' with a messy plot and a directionless outcome. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised.

The inventiveness of this movie was what won me over. Countless times I was amazed by the sheer novelty of ideas and their perfect execution. Additionally, once you've adjusted to the protagonists voice (which I initially perceived as being a bit miscast), the characters were mostly endearing creating a strongly fuelled interest in the outcome of the film.

'Meatball's' structure also deserves a mention. In general, animated movies seem to follow the tried and tested 'Hero vs villain' model which to any film veteran fast becomes tiresome. The development of this film's plot took a somewhat different approach and was considerably uniquely structured and paced very well. The lack of story in the trailer is guessedly due to the desire of the producers to keep the plot developments as unanticipated turns (and rightly so).

Many many times throughout I found myself laughing loudly in unison with the rest of the audience who seemed to be having as much fun as the crowd I was with. Most of the jokes worked and the repeating comedy themes (the hilarious 'rat-birds' to name one) never failed to bring out a fit of laughter.

My only complaint is that at some points there was perhaps an excess of originality creating the feeling that they were trying to cram as many ideas into the space of an hour and a half as conceivably possible. I sporadically found myself overwhelmed and desiring some filler scenes to give the movie more of a flow.

Well, if the trailer hasn't won you over and you're deliberating as to whether or not you think you'll enjoy, take my advice, forget the trailer and go and watch the most inventive and hysterical movie you'll see in quite some time...
 41. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs: a fun movie, even the second time around.

This film created one of those rare instances when, during the closing credits, I thought to myself "Wow, I really enjoyed that movie". At a first glance that was entirely based on the trailer, it seemed like one of those movies where I wasn't convinced that the story would be strong enough to last the entire film. Even after viewing the first 5 minutes, I was still a little uneasy about how the rest of the film would entertain. I shouldn't have been. After the next 10 minutes, I was deeply into the characters and the plot, and I remained this way until the end.

The animation suited the movie very well. Each character was so distinctively different from the other and the voice acting was phenomenal. It was humorous throughout with a lot of original comedy but it didn't overdue it to the degree of 'slapstick'. It provided a good amount of laughter for both the young children and the older, more mature ones in the audience. It's story was both funny and serious at the same time...'a perfect combination'.

You really have to see this movie for yourself to appreciate it. You have to be willing to give it a chance and NOT subconsciously assume that it is "just another movie for kids". Those people who aren't willing to do that will probably not enjoy this movie to its full and will miss the big picture...which is really a shame.

So go ahead and give this movie a watching if you think it's your type of film. I did, and consequently gave it two!...you gotta love the theatre

Jimmy,
 42. Eye-popping and mouth-watering in one, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs spins a 30-page children's book into a 90-minute all-you-can-laugh buffet.
 43. The town is fed up with eating sardines all the time so Flint Lockwood invents a machine that turns water into food and rains it down on the world three times a day. Unfortunately, Flint's machine has a mind of its own, and Flint must stop it before it destroys the world. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a 1978 children's book written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett. The book was adapted for the animated movie by Philip Lord and Christopher Miller who also co-directed the film. It is followed by Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013) (2013). Yes, in fact as early as 1965 American scientists held an experiment in which, for 4 months, they fed 24 men nothing but synthetic chemicals created in a lab (amino acids, vitamins, glucose, salts, and the fat ethyl linoeate), in the form of a tasteless goo. But food made in a lab is much more expensive than food produced in the normal way. However, Flint's methods as presented in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs are not meant to be taken seriously: more than water would be needed to create synthetic food, and making it into something that looked like real food would be extremely difficult. However the plot was heavily changed: (1) Changed from fantasy to slight science fiction; (2) They never actually try to stop the food weather; (3) The weather was isolated to the island without any part of the world knowing about it, whereas in the movie, it becomes a tourist attraction and the food even spreads around the world; (4) Flint Lockwood, the girl meteorologist, the corrupt mayor, and most of the other characters in the movie don't exist in the book; (5) The island had no association with sardines, it always rained food at the island; (6) There was no mount leftovers; (7) They never ever come back to the island; (8) The kids don't get excited with the no school; and (9) The book plot had nothing to do with many themes in the movie i.e. fame, family, individuality. a5c7b9f00b
