Circle in action

Jodah took advantage of the pause and scraped an arc in front of him with his toe, digging into the soft dark earth while mentally pulling one of Wade’s spells to him.

The arc flickered with a white, then blue, then white radiance, and flared up all around him.

He had completed the circle of protection just in time, for a new attack blazed over him from his opponent. Something blue and fluid smashed into the circle, spattering against it like waves against a breakwater reef.

As the attack faded, Jodah was prepared. He tried fire again, this time hoping that his opponent would be worn out by the attack.
