57. Though recognized for heroism as a lad, Ned Kelly can not escape the stigma of being the eldest of a brood sired by a known criminal. In days when an arrest equaled guilt and a conviction, his unfair imprisonment for horse thievery puts him steadfast, in the eyes of Victorian police, on the wrong side of things for life. With a sister unable to dissuade the unwanted advances of Constable Fitzpatrick, Ned, his brother Dan, and friends Joe Byrne and Steve Hart soon find themselves labeled "an outlaw gang" by the less-than-honorable constable. It's a designation they're apt to live up to after Ned's mother is unfairly arrested and sentenced to three years hard labor. In retaliation, the Kelly Gang strikes out against the oppressive Victorian government, with ultimately tragic results and passage into Australian folklore.
 58. An innocent man becomes one of the most wanted criminals the world has ever known.
 59. There can be few more enduring myths than the myth of the Celt: earthy, emotional, fun-loving, loyal, brave, against the system, irresistible to women, and also persecuted, the latter by another stereotypical type, the cold, heartless, cruel, authority-wielding Englishman. I didn't know a lot about Ned Kelly (an Australian outlaw of Irish descent) before watching this film, and having watched it, I feel I still don't know a lot about his story; except that, supposedly, it is exactly the same as that of William Wallace, or of just about any character in any film who joined the I.R.A. (the fact that the villains in this story may have been Australian born is a minor point; they're spiritually English in every way that counts). It's a narrative that never seems to die: there are echoes of it even in 'Titanic', or, with a different persecuted minority, 'The Last of the Mohicans'. Now, I'm English but I'm not a blind patriot; I know my country has done some pretty shameful things and I'm quite willing to watch any story of English perfidy providing it has something new to tell me about the human condition. But even on the off chance that this film actually tells me the truth about the Kelly gang, that's still no defence for a lazy, clichéd story that allows its audience the comfort of imagining themselves as heroic rebels instead of asking how and why they themselves are part of the same system they would affect to decry. Judged purely as a film, 'Ned Kelly' is competent, even dramatic; but a story about the man who shot him might have been so much more interesting.
 60. This movie never made it to theaters in our area, so when it became available on DVD I was one of the first to rent it. For once, I should listened to the critics and passed on this one.

Despite the excellent line up of actors the movie was very disappointing. I can see now why it went straight to video.

I had thought that with Bloom, Ledger, and Rush it could have some value. All have done wonderful work in the past.

The movie was slow moving and never pulled me in. I failed to develop much empathy for the characters and had to fight the urge to fast-forward just to get to the end.

I do not recommend this film even if you are thinking of renting it for only for 'eye candy' purposes. It won't satisfy even that.
 61. Expertly combining the personal and the epic, Jordan has crafted an excellent historical saga that doesn't collapse under the weight of too much history.
