  1. This is for folks who don't want to connect their TVs to the internet
  2. We live in a crazy world. I don't judge.
  3.
  4.
  5. Requirements:
  6.
  7. A laptop with windows
  8. their may be some desktops that are able to open hotspot
  9. if you have one, just know that I envy you
  10. An android TV that has VLC installed
  11. and connected to the hotspot from laptop/desktop
  12.
  13.
  14. Instructions:
  15.
  16. The first two steps are the same as in instructions.txt
  17. Except, in the third step you'll check both public and private. Allow access.
  18. Now check VLC in TV
  19.
  20.
  21. An obvious "Windows sucks at doing stuff" section:
  22.
  23. Windows turns off your hotspot after sometime like a dunce despite having a device connected
  24.
  25. after opening a hotspot,
  26. you'll see a "power saving section" turn it off
  27. type devmgmt.msc (in run)
  28. under network adapters
  29. find a "Microsoft Wi-Fi direct virtual adapter" (might have a number at the end)
  30. right-click > properties > power management
  31. uncheck "allow computer to turn of this device to save power". "OK".
  32. additional measures if you want https://beebom.com/windows-10-mobile-hotspot-keeps-turning-off-fix/
  33.
  34.
  35. Tangent:
  36.
  37. People would argue that some TVs are capable of opening a hotspot
  38. I'm aware of that if it weren't for the fact that
  39. VLC doesn't scan the network for things if the device that has VLC running
  40. isn't explicitly connected to "wi-fi"
  41.
  42. This is a long standing issue since android releases. I mean, there's a really easy fix for this.
  43. Just add a checkbox in setting saying "scan network irrespective of connection" and we'd all be happy.
  44. But no. We're all kinds of stubborn.
  45.
  46. There's a different way but that involves bubbleupnp app being installed on the TV
  47. opening TV's hotspot and connecting your laptop to that but "dms" way of exposing subtitle isn't
  48. recognized by bubbleupnp. So you'll have to make mkv containers for videos
  49. or make a pull request to the project fixing the issue (Bonus points if you can do this)
  50. or just find some other software but I doubt you'll find something close to ease of use and zero setup dms provides.
  51. Trust me. I'd know. I browsed through 300+ projects under github topics upnp,dlna,ftp-server combined.
  52. What did I lose? a weekend and some sanity.
  53.
  54.
  55. Another tangent:
  56.
  57. Why open a hotspot? can't we do something like.....
  58. blacklisting TV's mac address and not allowing internet access for it?
  59. disabling internet on a particular ethernet port and connecting that to the TV using ethernet cable?
  60. setting up virtual overlay network without internet just for the laptop and TV?
  61.
  62. Sure. Knock yourself out. I highly doubt that I could write a "one size fits all instructions"
  63. for those questions across vendors, feature support, outdated things among other variables.
  64. But yes, they are possible. With enough time sunk into it, Im sure its possible but Im very lazy
  65. to check the feasibility of it all. So please, DIY to your heart's content.
  66.
  67. IMHO, its just easier to buy a cheap wifi router and not connecting the internet cable to that.
  68. if you're willing to ignore the wires, its even cheaper to just connect
  69. your laptop/desktop with TV using a long ethernet cable.
