  1. Here's how blindfolded Mario 3 works.
  2.
  3. I will be using the All-Stars version of Mario 3, for two important audio cue reasons:
  4. > I will be able to hear if I bonk my head on anything. (The NES version makes no sound for this.) This will be important for determining my position in quite a number of stages using audio cues.
  5. > I will be able to hear when I successfully enter a door. (Again, the NES version makes no sound for this.) This is extremely important in fortresses.
  6.
  7. The basic premise for the rules is twofold:
  8. * All meaningful progress must be made blindfolded.
  9. * However, I don't want to game over if possible, nor do I want to take 3 weeks to clear a world.
  10. The rules below are in place with the above two premises in mind.

  15.
  16. -Stay Blindfolded In-Stage-
  17. * In general, I am not allowed to remove my blindfold while in-stage. If I do so, it counts as a Peek (see below).
  18.
  19. -Peek Counter-
  20. * The following things will count toward the Peek Counter:
  21. > Removing my blindfold in-stage at ANY TIME to check my current situation. (I may then do the segment sighted to determine/practice strats before replacing my blindfold without additional penalty, but once I put it back on, if I remove it again, it counts against me again.)
  22. > Removing my blindfold on the world map to figure out my inventory. (Removing it on the map to read donation comments is fine.)
  23. > Getting a Game Over counts as a Peek (see Special Circumstances, below).
  24.
  25. -Save States-
  26. * Save states are allowed to assure that what is hopefully meaningful progress is kept (to make sure we don't take 3 weeks to clear the world). Sure, this does take a bit away from the "holy crap"-ness of the run, but in its own way, if I'm not saving where I THINK I'm saving, then using save states could have the potential to ruin a stage (by placing me in an unwinnable situation, such as saving right before falling in a pit or right before getting hit as small Mario); if this happens, I can take a death and start the stage over. Thus, where to save becomes a strategic decision, as it can hurt me as much as it could help me.
  27.
  28. -World Map Rules-
  29. * For the purpose of reading donations and what-not, checking those things while on the map does not count as a Peek, so long as I do not look at my inventory.
  30. * However, since no Warp Whistles will be collected in this run (thus I can't accidentally use one), I must make all map progress blindfolded as well. If I intend to use a power-up before a stage, I must guess at what I think I might have, and where it may be in my inventory. Looking at my inventory to determine button presses in order to pick a desired item counts as a Peek.
  31.
  32. -Special Circumstances-
  33. * Game Over - If I lose all my lives, I may play sighted back to the stage where I last was. This counts as a Peek.
  34. * State Reset - This has yet to happen in 4 completed worlds of play. However, if I get multiple Game Overs in a world and feel it's because I cannot skip stages I would normally be capable of skipping, or don't have resources that my sighted run would generally have, then I can reset the entire game and play the game in its entirety to the stage I was having such immense difficulty with. This counts as a peek point for EACH world I replay, ON TOP of whichever Game Over occurred last. I may collect resources as I like, with the understanding that when the blindfold goes back on, the more stuff I have, the harder it's going to be to track my inventory. However, I should have a trove of lives and stuff, hopefully ensuring I can get past the obstacles I was having trouble with.
