  1.
  2. READ THIS SHIT NEWBROS: (some stuff might be outdated)
  3. _______________________________________________________________________________
  4.
  5. > Buddy Invite Mechanics
  6.
  7. First off, get a buddy invite from a friend that already plays or make an alt account and refer yourself (you will need an alt some day anyways) or click on the link in the OP and remember the name of the recruited (read more below (3)), depending on who he is, they might give you some free isk once you upgrade to Omega.
  8.
  9.
  10. (1) If you use a buddy invite and then later subscribe with real money, your
  11. inviter is rewarded with a PLEX, which he *might* sell and split with you
  12. (significant cash for a newbro). (2) If you subscribe by getting enough ISK
  13. to buy and activate a PLEX, your inviter is rewarded with 30 nontransferrable
  14. days of game time.
  15.
  16. In /eog/, a 50/50 reward split is common courtesy, though some offer better.
  17.
  18.
  19. (3)
  20. The ONLY way you can be sure of the name of your recruiter is if they enable
  21. "Friend Connect" on their end. Click the link in your invite mail to check if
  22. a player's name is on the invite webpage: http://i.imgur.com/YJ2s9zG.jpg If
  23. you are hoping to get a reward split, don't use any invites without names!
  24.
  25. The ONLY way your recruiter can be sure of who you are is if you do NOT tick
  26. the box on the account creation page labelled "Do NOT connect me with my
  27. inviter". If you are hoping to get a reward split, don't tick this box!
  28.
  29. _______________________________________________________________________________
  30.
  31. > Where do I find you guys?
  32.
  33. There are 2 in-game public chat channels that many players from this thread
  34. use:
  35.
  36. "/v/ bros" - has been around the longest, is larger and has diverse
  37. membership. Tends towards nullsec discussion and perspective. Owned by
  38. Broski North, a small but high-SP null group with a long history on 4chan and
  39. Reddit.
  40.
  41. "/eog/ BROS" - Owned by Oruze Cruise, a small WH group that thinks too hard.
  42.
  43. _______________________________________________________________________________
  44.
  45. > Can I play the full game without paying for it?
  46.
  47. Yes, Eve is F2P with some restrictions and you can earn enough money ingame to get a subscription.
  48. _______________________________________________________________________________
  49.
  50. > I just started, what should I do?
  51.
  52. Complete all the Tutorial, it gives you valuable free Skill points, then mess with the Opportunities, then press F12 > "Show Career Agents" and run ALL
  53. of their missions (yes, run the mining missions even if you're planning to
  54. PVP, the industry missions even if you're planning to explore, etc); they give
  55. you ISK, ships, skillbooks and teach you the basics.
  56. _______________________________________________________________________________
  57.
  58. > Is it too late to get into EVE?
  59.
  60. No.
  61. _______________________________________________________________________________
  62.
  63. > You have to have high SP to play EVE, so it's too late.
  64.
  65. This is incorrect on many levels.
  66.
  67. 1) Anyone can be useful with even under 1M SP, and there is nothing stopping
  68. you from doing some cheap T1 frig solo pvp, which some argue is some of the
  69. most fun to be had in the game. A tackler and scout is a necessary addition to
  70. any small, medium or large sized gang, and you can scout in a rookie ship.
  71. Specializing 1M SP in the right place can beat 100M SP in the wrong place. Not
  72. to mention that new players can get into very useful (and arguably
  73. overpowered) ewar and logistics frigates/cruisers very fast.
  74.
  75. 2) SP does NOT equate skill. Skill comes through experience, not having
  76. overpowered ships, characters and implants. Someone with 100M+ SP, a high
  77. grade slave set and a full officer fit can be killed by a new player under the
  78. right circumstances. And easily by a group of new players. 3) If you are so
  79. concerned about SP, you can simply buy a high SP character on the bazaar. P2W?
  80. Just make enough isk to afford it.
  81. _______________________________________________________________________________
  82.
  83. > What is a PLEX?
  84.
  85. PLEX is short for 30 Day Concord Pilot License Extension. It's an in-game item
  86. that can be used to pay for your subscription without using more traditional
  87. payment methods.
  88.
  89. EVE players can pay for their account with in-game money, ISK, by buying
  90. PLEXes off the market. When you sign up for a trial via an invite link, the
  91. person who invited you can get transferred a PLEX if you upgrade to a paying
  92. subscription, and he can then sell it and transfer funds to you, which can be
  93. a great asset for a new player.
  94. _______________________________________________________________________________
  95.
  96. > A primer as to why /eog/ does not need tripcodes, -fags and -friends
  97.
  98. In EVE online, the meta of who you are, your corp, what alliance you belong
  99. to, your history, and what you personally have done is important. Therefore,
  100. each post will never be judged on its weight alone, but on who posted it. Each
  101. post will have needless amounts of meta which will throw off actual game
  102. discussion. Say a hisec carebear has an opinion? Yell at him for mining.
  103. Someone in nullsec? Make fun of him for being a nullbabby. Someone in X shitty
  104. alliance? Make fun of them and disregard their post.
  105.
  106. In addition to the fact that in earlier threads (like last year) 90% of the
  107. posts would be only 3-4 people, it would magnify the shitposting to a grand
  108. degree. People would simply post to rile people up (hello mr. unclaimed) and
  109. to ignite shitposting (we already have enough of this with race).
  110.
  111. So it goes beyond the whole '4chan hates trips' thing. It doesn't matter
  112. whether in this particular thread *you* make some 'quality' posts. We've
  113. consistently yelled at trips until they stop, because without this we descend
  114. to become the tripfag circlejerk that plagues /vg/ (though apparently
  115. moderation is kicking up, I don't know since this is the only /vg/ thread I
  116. visit on a regular basis)
  117.
  118. So, in short, that's why. If you want to post with your name, there is kugu,
  119. FHC, hell the fucking news sites and god forbid evegate.
  120. _______________________________________________________________________________
  121.
  122. > Starter PvP guide:
  123.
  124. There's close-range play (for frigates, some 1km-14km); and there's keeping
  125. range (with the option for disengage and for mitigating damage through
  126. proximity and powerful modules).
  127.
  128. It's probably best starting out with videos of one of the most interesting
  129. playstyles, manual piloting. Here's a video discussing real flight techniques
  130. and their relevance in-game.
  131.
  132. Note: quite a few of this videos are outdated, even from before the implementation of F2P,
  133. but the playstyle is still essentially the same, and the mechanics are mostly unchanged.
  134. Note that as an alpha you will be locked to flying ships of your race and some modules
  135. are also locked behind Omega.

  145.
  146. (After the basics from the first video, it's helpful watching the mouse on the
  147. range-rulers for an idea of the angle that its producing. Spoiler: it's
  148. double-clicking in space, like a 3D ARPG.)

  155.
  156. ----
  157.
  158. This is a video on one of those "powerful modules" which can even out the
  159. learning experience, just like figuring how to approach (increasing
  160. transversal, how "click-approach" ships act, where to click the orbit button),
  161. and knowing which ships it effects most.

  165.
  166. ----
  167.
  168. Here are some trial-account PvP videos. They are mostly nullsec play, where
  169. many of the frigates are Interceptors - less tanky / gimmicky / blingy fit
  170. than frigates from faction-warfare space.

  179.
  180. Lastly, this video shows the flow of manual flight and discusses how the
  181. light-tackle role is one of the most over-suggested playstyles.

  198. (This is a bit obsolete since Fall '15 because of increased starter SP.)
  199.

  202.
  203. ----
  204.
  205. > Where do I find fights?
  206.
  207. If you are looking for PvP, you will find people most places in lowsec, but
  208. faction warfare space (use dotlan / the faction warfare windows in-client)
  209. will have more people and more places for you to hide.
  210.
  211. If you are wanting to make money, a defensive plex (in your own faction's
  212. space) is at best (99.9% contest) 3/4 the value of the equivalently sized
  213. offensive plex and at worst (0% contest) has no payout at all. Offensive
  214. plexes have a flat payout based on size; contest level doesn't matter.
