Backstory:
Maximus Hammicus was inducted into Legion Ültra from a young age, training and studying its code of conduct, the Lex Legio, until he was of age. By the time of his initiation, he was a 7 foot tall, massively muscled Battle-Brother like many others of the Legion, with extensive knowledge of the Lex Legio and its doctrines.

On what should have been a glorious first mission under Colonel Custer's 7th Brigade to retake an orbital fortress, everything went terribly wrong when the fortress reactor's catastrophically exploded, launching it, the entire 7th Brigade, and the evil invaders into the oblivion of empty space. Except for Maximus, who arrived back at Nobelia in a escape pod. His battle-brothers much celebrated his miraculous return.

After a few more missions and a promotion to Battle-Corporal, Maximus showed promise as a great Ültramarine, but at the Battle of Teutoborger, both fighting armies succumbed to a disastrous mishap involving subterranean explosions and a massive ravine. Maximus was once again the only survivor, limping back to the Legion Ültra's encampment. His battle-brothers rejoiced but started becoming suspicious.

His military career strangely stagnated after this, despite Maximus being perfectly compliant with the Lex Legio (as he frequently stated loudly to his companions). He still was able to gloriously fight with the Legion until Maximus' platoon was assigned to recover an experimental device from a pirate spaceship. A massive storm engulfed the Legion and pirate fleets, obliterating them, except for Maximus' fighter wing. Maximus triumphantly returned with the device to the Ültraheadquarters, or so he thought, as his battle-brothers immediately put him in Ültrajail and demanded an investigation into Maximus' actions.

In spite of whatever anyone may think, the Ültrainquisitors found no fault in Maximus' course of actions during any of these disasters, as they were all adherent to the letter of the Lex Legio (as Maximus kept loudly asserting), and released him from jail. However, no battle-brother would want to be assigned to his squad, battalion, or fortress. Maximus was assigned to a remote guard post, but even the few of the less adequate Ültramarines rather face Commissars than Maximus' company, and he was left to guard the post on his own, which he did without complaints and perfectly according to the Lex Legio.

Until the Ültradministration got tired of receiving daily detailed reports of nothing happening during his patrols, and decided to honorably discharge Maximus from his service against his will. Dejected, Maximus enlisted himself in what to him was the second best thing: HoNK.
