Thoughts on the guys we drafted today: 2B Brandon Lowe (87) - I like this guy after reading through the scouting reports, they consider him to be one of the best offensive second basemen, possibly #1 depending on where Ian Happ ends up. Like his floor as a stable OBP guy with respectable power. Arm isn't great so he's pretty much relegated as a 2B or LF'er (was hoping possible UTIL guy). RHP Brandon Koch (118) - He's a reliever, just has two pitches, shoddy control, funky delivery. His fastball goes mid-90s and his Slider is considered on of the best breaking balls in the draft. The Rays know what they're getting into here and so I have no doubt he will developed properly. OF Joe McCarthy (148) - My absolute favorite pick in the draft PURELY on where we picked him up. He was picked in the fifth round and was considered to be first round talent at one point, I think he and Chris Betts are huge steals for us. All we need to do is sign him and hope he comes back from the back surgery well. He has excellent pitch recognition and can be an above average CF'er if he taps into power. RHP Benton Moss (178) - I've read up on him as a starter which I like very much. He has good control and four solid pitches. His fastball is weak (88-92mph), but is much better with his secondary stuff. Reminiscent of Jake Odorizzi in which they are built the same and throw the exact same pitches. The key will be his fastball. "2B" Jake Cronenworth (208) - idk why we drafted him as a 2B, I really would like him as a pitcher. For awhile he was considered a reliever, but a strong season had scouts saying he had starter potential. Fastball is iffy, another high 80's low 90's guy, but his splitter was considered THE best in the draft. The only thing I could really get on him about being a position player was his ability to play multiple positions and has good plate discipline. I'd much rather see him pitching,,, RHP Reece Karalus (238) - Dude is 6'3, 230 lbs and is pitching for some no name college's bullpen. He did have a good year, but I just think that's weird. .-. He has excellent control, the only things keeping him from being a starter is his lack of a changeup and soft slider (mid to high 70s). Compared to Burke Badenhop. Apparently. C Danny de la Calle (268) - Not gonna hit without an act of God,,,, Considered a strong pitch framer so I say backup catcher. RHP Sam Triece (298) - Don't really know what this guy could do, poor control, weird delivery, iffy three pitches. Just another senior sign for Betts and McCarthy.
