敗者の詩章・一「「｛Deus, Arma?｜なぜ　牙を剥く」」


砂混じりの風に混じりーー
Mixed in the wind filled with sandーー

初めて、女性が言葉らしき言葉を紡いだ。
The woman spoke words for the first time.

「わたしに、その『何かがいる』という話を伝えるためにここまで来たの？」
"You came all the way here just to tell me that 『Something is there』?"

「はい」
"Yes."

女性の問いかけに、考人がゆっくりと頷いてみせる。
The old man slowly nodded at the woman's question.

「なぜ、わたしなの？」
"Why me?"

「年を重ねていくと、ごく稀に、物事の本質が透けて見えることがある」
"When you get along in age, quite rarely you'll be able to see through the true nature of things."

足元の地表を、次に頭上の空を眺め、老人は愛おしそうに目を細めた。
the old man gazed fondly at the earth underfoot and then the sky overhead as if it were precious.

「いわばこの世界に連なる流れ……ただ、悲しいかな。
人は老いることで流れを見ることを可能としながらも、
老いることで、その流れのまま流されることを良しと思いこむようになる」
"The flow that encompasses this world so to speak.... Only, it's sad isn't it.  It's only as a person grows old that they can see the flow.   As they grow old that flow spills out and they think that it is good."


運命、定め、
Fate.  Destiny.

そう自らを納得させることで、自らの求めた約束を目の当たりにしながら、
その地に足を踏み入れることを諦めてしまう。
Yes, just when the promise we persue is before our eyes, our feet give up treading the earth.

「私の老いた目でもはっきりと分かる。しかしあなただけは、その流れの中で自分を失っていない。
そう……流れに反する者。ーー誠に羨ましい。なぜあなたは、その流れに牙を剥くことができるのか」
"My eyes may be old but they clearly understand.  You alone have not lost yourself within that flow.  Yes, you are a person who rejects the flow.  ーーI'm truly jealous.  I wonder, why are you able to bare your fangs at the flow?

「どうかしらね」
"I don't know."

 そっけなく答える女性に、老人はにこやかな表情のまま。
The old man smiled at her blunt response.

「まあ、年老いた者の遺言と思ってお聞き下さい」
"Well, please listen to this old man's last request."

「そんな重いもの、押しつけられても困るわ」
"Such a heavy thing, I'll be troubled if you force it on me."

「はは、違いない」
"Haha, no doubt."

低い声で、しばし老人は笑い続けていた。
The old man laughed in a deep voice.

笑い続けーーいつしか、その笑い声は泣き声と区別がつかなくなっていた。
The laughーーBefore one knew it. the laughing voice became a crying voice.

「……そうだな。思えば私がアレと遭遇したのもまた、
そういった意味では必然だったのかもしれませんな」
"That's right.  If I think about it the fact that I encountered THAT and the meaning behind it was probably inevitable."

その声は笑い声でも泣き声でもない。
His voice was neither laughing nor crying.

何かに怯えた、掠れ声だった。
His voice was horse as if he was afraid of something.
