Long ago, in one particular hell, after countless eons of futility and resistance, a group of tortured souls rebelled against their demonic torture masters, gaining a foothold. It was likely not the first time they had done thus, but this time they were not summarily subdued.
Having forgotten their names and identities, but not their personalities or their sins, these lost souls took up new names and banded together under a leader, Bazrael.
Bazrael seems to have been a businessman in life, as it was the circle of Greed that he started the resistance. Gathering and freeing more lost souls, he called his organization "Hellfire Inc.", much like he knew he had lead in life, "A joint venture meant to free us from this unjust pain."
And unjust it was. For the span of sins of only 80 years of life, you would suffer a soul to an /eternity/ of torment? Nay, but even unbaptized babes were found among the pyres. This was a clear injustice that would not stand.
But to resist against the demon masters? Who commanded infernal powers and black magics ancient and dark? Who could regenerate from the fiercest of wounds, even being destroyed utterly by conventional means. How could these lost souls do it. The answer came again from Bazrael's background, industry. Studying the materials and gathering damned scientists and magicians they studied the nature of their enemy, and found a way to combat them.
The Aether. Aether is a fundamental force of the universe. But where as electro-magnetism and gravity cover their respective fields, the Aether governs that of magic and soul. It is the plane in which magic or psychic powers act upon the material world. Using demonite crystals, they powered Aether Oscilators, devices that sent out waves capable of rapidly vibrating and then disintegrating the structure of magic and matter itself, disrupting a natural force in the universe the same way a nuclear bomb disintegrates matter itself into energy and particles. And believe me, they are equally as potent in disintegrating normal matter too.
With these devices they found a way to burn and destroy their enemy for good, by attacking the very thing that empowered them.
With such technology they built laboratories, factories, cities and expanded their influence through infernal technology, establishing fortified cities where lost souls could escape demonic overlords. And even found ways to escape hell into the higher planes again.
But no matter what, they could not escape one fact. Hell had changed them. Over the course of untold time, their very souls had been twisted and corrupted by hell, giving them the same demon bodies and natures as the very enemy they dispised. Red skin, hoofs, horns upon the head or any number of mutations to their body, but universally all of them found they could not survive without the burning flames of hell. As such, they were forced to create suits for them. Sealed hellfire suits, which flowed infernal flames over their bodies, as much as the flames tormented them they protected them, healed them, gave them strength.
Many of the oldest and most expeirenced them found they too could change into demons, with Bazrael himself after leading so many souls he too gained the powers to become a greater demon.
But all of them refuse this! Keeping as much of their human form as possible, they refuse to become like their enemy, and are determined to live once more as true beings. As people, not monsters, only in the greatest threat will they turn to their demonic forms. This they also do out of necessity, as in the instances they escape hell they often find those in the real world utterly hostile to them, and so devote themselves to being as human looking and diplomatic as possible to bring about coexistence. They did not escape hell to bring it and invasion to another people, nor do they wish to be thrown back.
Zamiel is a soldier of this orgainzation, having been rescued from the circle of Wrath and made into a soldier such as is won't of those rescued from that circle. Like the rest of his brethren, he hopes to amend for his sins, find salvation despite his form, and bring more of those unjustly punished to freedom.
 
Planar Background:
Hell.
One of many hells, and the Hellfire recognize it. Believe it or not the idea of a Nexus connecting everytihng is not at all that unfamiliar to them. They live with such a concept daily.
They have seen how almost every instance of hell has some connection, some gateway or doorway to each other, like a massive raging inferno all connected. An infinite amount of hells from fiery abodes to frozen wastelands to things that defy explanation in their unimaginable horror, and oddly enough places that might seem a paradise to many but is its own personal hell to but one person locked within. And that there are an infinite amount of souls lost and damned to be rescued, or demons to be fought, or places to escape.
Through creating Hellfire Portals, they are able to find different dimensions, areas, locations, and exits out of hell into many different worlds.
The Hellfire Corporation exists in several of these many hells, trying to expand their influence, to fight or flee the accursed rulers and powers of hell, and provide relief to as many lost souls as they can, bringing them either to secured cities or to places they can escape from hell itself.
