- FAO SEO agency guys: how do you retain your clients once you ranked them?
- So lets say you've ranked them in the first 2 months, and you did it without links because that particular niche you were trying to rank for didn't even need links, but simply on page improvements and a few technical fixes.

- The client is happy but already achieved what he intended, why should he remain paying the same than before he ranked? what stops him from cancelling your services and not losing anything in the process?
- Basically you did all this work for 2 or 3 months and because you ranked him so quickly your reward is losing him
- I guess it might depend on your business model, but for sure i would prefer to do something that can bring regular money from one client, instead of having to constantly find new clients.
- Maybe you could charge some sort of higher upfront fee and then a lower monthly maintenance fee to make sure they stay ranking well?
- You could make a more long term plan of first ranking well for the initial keywords but then in time working on building the keywords they could make money from, maybe keywords in different parts of the funnel and long tail keywords.
- Maybe add more services to what you're offering, blogs, or social media or advertising?
- On the other hand, quickly ranking someone and making them happy for little money is a way to get referrals also which are very valuable.

- First of all, based on this comment in your OP, make sure you are charging enough to cover the work you're putting in. Don't massively overdeliver for a client in the first few months just to keep them on board, but make sure it is worth your while.
- Aside from that, I would echo the advice that @323410 has given. I would also perhaps add to that the following. Consider not billing them on a monthly retainer if the work is not there to do. Instead, offer regular auditing or reviews of the site and competitors to ensure that they are competitive in their industry and identify in advance if further work needs doing to keep them at the top.

- Otherwise consider looking more into CRO, digital marketing, PPC and other ways to generate further leads for the client rather than simply SEO as if the client is generating a solid return from your work then they will be much more likely to consider alternative services that you are offering.
- Well, thats a good problem to have.
- My situation is opposite :D

- Thanks. What would you say is the average life span of an SEO agency client? that would give me an idea of what I'm dealing with

- Thats a good point
- Buy more dice. ;)
- Those who get it, get it.
- so you need a lot of clients to make up for those who "dont get it"?
- I gotta be honest, I'm not yet at a point where I can "choose" clients like big agencies do, so basically whatever or whoever wants to hire me gets my services. I know big agencies actually choose very carefully their clients and make them fill long questionares to test their interest and application, but like I said I'm nowhere that point
- So basically your advice would be to focus on more volume of clients so those who leave don't make a dent?

- No, that's not what I'm saying at all. It was a reference to a legendary post made by a legendary BHW member. Sure, it's a slightly different topic, but it's effective enough to be cross-platform.
- My suggestion is to SHOW that client why they need you, even if it requires dice, a printer, and some red ink. Show them what they'd be missing out on, by not having you in their corner.
- EDIT: But yes, it wouldn't be a bad thing to continue your outreach. I'd do both.
- Once you ranked them, then its all depend on your communication skills to keep the client paying for your service. There is a thing called fear to lose the rankings.
- You can offer to help them rank for more keywords, rank a GMB listing, or provide a monitoring and maintenance package. The monitoring and maintenance package could be a low cost charge but it will be ongoing income. Make sure to give detailed monthly reports to show you are actually monitoring thier rankings.
- thanks to all of you guys, very helpful
- any of you can give me an estimate as to for how long an average client sticks with a SEO Agency? 3 months? 6 months? a year?

- The average will depend on how well you can sell yourself and your services. They can be a few months to many years. The key thing is you need to present yourself as a service that offers continued value. The best way to do this is by providing detailed monthly reports and following them up with a phone call to see how everything is going. Most customers leave because they feel they are neglected and not getting the attention they deserve, regardless of results.
- Mostly it takes quite a while than 2 months to see rank drop due to non SEO. In some niche, it happens in years. And the clients always come back eventually when they see their leads or sales dropping. So, you get the picture here, I believe.
