  1. Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire Wonder Trade Run submission
  2. =============================================================
  3. This submission is about completing a speedrun of OR/AS with a Pokémon obtained through Wonder Trade. Wonder Trades are a feature introduced in Gen 6 that allows you to trade one of your Pokémon with a random person on the internet doing the same. The result is that you end up with an essentially random Pokémon.
  4. As you can get very bad Pokémon in such a procedure, the initial phase of the run consists in trading your Pokémon until one of them is deemed runnable. We don't want a Caterpie to complete the game for example. Typically, these runs end up using decent breed rejects. Some nice Pokémon to use are Froakie, Kangaskan, Eevee, etc.
  5. This type of run will also be different from regular runs, as items you pickup and buy, trainers you battle, TMs and HMs you use will differ from Pokémon to Pokémon. On the fly routing is the most important aspect of such a run.
  6.
  7. There is also a set of self-imposed rules within this category. They can be found here: https://pastebin.com/0eqPwnBs
  8. A summary of these rules:
  9. - The first Wonder Traded Pokémon must be between level 1 and 15.
  10. - It must not be a legendary Pokémon or a Pokémon used in the regular Any% speedrun.
  11.
  12. Therefore wireless internet access is required (worst case, I can provide it myself with a 4G connection).
  13. ============
  14. Since such a run is very reliant on luck, the estimate is fairly consequent.
  15. The estimate also includes the initial trading phase. As this trading phase can virtually last forever, I assume it is going to take at most 30 minutes. Otherwise multiple solutions to a longer trade phase are available.
  16. - We do not show the trading phase as part of the run and do it beforehand (therefore the estimate would drop by ~30 minutes, but this kind of defeats the point of this run).
  17. - We already do trades before the run is shown, trade for 30 minutes during the run, and pick the already traded Pokémon if nothing good came out of the shown trading phase.
  18. - A pool of people (probably members of the Pokémon Speedrunning Community) will have a runnable Pokémon for me ready and I, my couch, or random.org picks one of them.
  19. - I can trade using several consoles at once, resulting in 1h worth of trades.
  20. - Not all these solutions are mutually exclusive.
  21.
  22. We are slightly bending the rules for Wonder Trade runs for marathon safety:
  23. - To further increase the likeliness of getting a runnable Pokémon, I will have one Omega Ruby and one Alpha Sapphire cart. These games are very different as the opponents (Team Magma vs. Team Aqua) and the legendary (Groudon vs. Kyogre) to defeat matter a lot in your choice. Should I get a Pokémon that suits the other game much better, I will trade it to the other game.
  24. - If defeating the legendary Pokémon is too time consuming or impossible, I will just catch it with a Masterball (and trade it away too if time permits).
  25. - I am going to trade Castform and Latias in one sitting rather than two to avoid having to reconnect twice.
  26. - The run ends before the credits, not after (saving roughly 12 minutes).
  27. ============
  28. A very valid point was made by Fatzke to me:
  29. As human nature will undoubtedly cause people to try to troll us, we will fairly likely be victim of players calling their Pokémon and trainers in a very questionable way before sending them to Wonder Trades.
  30.
  31. Problem 1) We get a good Pokémon with a bad trainer name and/or Pokémon nickname:
  32. Solution: Before the actual run starts, I can rename the Pokémon and change the Origin Trainer name using a homebrewed 3DS and a program called PKHex. This procedure doesn't take very long.
  33.
  34. Problem 2) The names will still be visible if we show the trading phase on stream:
  35. Solution 1) Do not show the trades on stream (as before, kind of defeats the point of the run).
  36. Solution 2) I made a program allowing to blur sections of a screen. This will also have the side effect that people will be less tempted to try and troll us. Blurring is also less displeasing to the eye and intrusive than black bars for the viewers.
