  14. Those seeking audience or trade agreements with the Court of Twilight must first speak with Nivei, chief negotiator and economic liason. To those he meets over the course of business, Nivei's appearance is surprisingly unimpressive. While crystalline and shining, his hide is bereft of the jewels or silks expected of one of his office. He wears only simple metallic bands on his limbs and wings -- cast-offs, no doubt, from a more financially well-endowed client or acquaintance.
  15.
  16. It's all a ruse, of course; a part of the game. Nivei's never short on coin, even if his own coffers run dry. There's always someone who owes him, some favour he hasn't called in yet, some strings he hasn't yet pulled. He's as crafty as he is shining, and lives for the thrill of sealing a profitable deal. Playing the part of the poor, beleaguered pauper in the Court of Twilight helps him do just that.
  17.
  18. (Anyone doubting Nivei's ability to secure wealth need look no further than the alluring Ranna, with whom the chief negotiator is quite enamoured. For Ranna, Nivei has no end of jewels and eye-catching baubles. If only Ranna was less patiently disinterested in glittering materialism.)
  19.
  20. Trickery and guile may serve Nivei well in his office, but that's not all that rules his life. Honour guides him as well, from time to time, and it's honour that binds him to Trajan. The particulars of that link are left vague, perhaps on purpose; the only thing known for a certainty is that Nivei has made his fealty to Trajan public. It's an act not without consequence, as Nivei's son, Imperium, refuses to have anything to do with him so long as he maintains his connection to Trajan. Whatever effect the distance has on Nivei is kept obscured, subsumed along with everything else under the coatl's visage of sleek pragmatism.
