“Here we go again,” Velvet said. Sun stood across from her, ready to jump.

“On three?” Sun said. Velvet nodded.

“One … two … th—”

“Wait!” Velvet shouted. Sun leaned forward too far, windmilled his arms, and grabbed a handrail with his tail to stop himself from falling.

“What?” Sun asked.

Velvet turned to look for a locker on the airbus. It was in the back, close to where she had boarded. She hurried over as more of the floor disappeared and students either jumped or fell from the bottom of the vehicle.

The small chest was locked, but she broke the hinge with the edge of her camera box. She lifted the lid and grinned.

“Parachutes?” Sun asked, looking over Velvet’s shoulder. “Isn’t that cheating?”

Velvet pulled out two parachutes, leaving a couple behind. “The first and only rule is survival,” she said. “But if you don’t want one—”

Sun snatched the second backpack from her. “Good thinking, Velvet.”

He and Velvet strapped on their backpacks.
