  1. Pointless
  2. =========
  3.
  4. There is no point in Facebook. Now, that's a very broad generalization. Many will and have assured me that they only use the service to keep up with old friends or extended family. Facebook is great in these cases. A majority of the time, however, it is a meaningless distraction. When I check Facebook, it's not to gain insight or to find something to read. I want to be entertained. I want to share. I want to consume.
  5.
  6. What is the point in this mindless consumption of mundane information about the lives of others? It may be because we care, but oftentimes it is not. Why do we concern ourselves with this data that will be forgotten in less than twenty-four hours? Why do we, in turn, share more uninspired one-line thoughts about the world? Do we not have anything better to do?
  7.
  8. Why do we participate in this repetitive, infinite loop of vapid conversation and insipid comments? Validation, of course. But there has to be something else.
  9.
  10. While I'm focusing on Facebook, this applies to other services as well, such as Twitter or Path or Instagram. Does anyone really, truly care about what you time you went to sleep? Does anyone enjoy for more than a brief moment the photographs of your cat that are smothered by trite filters? Quite frankly, no one gives a damn about what you had for lunch. Stop taking pictures and enjoy the real thing. Go to sleep when you want, or when you feel like it. Turn the lights and your phone off, and just leave everything. Be alone, be still, be quiet. Whatever you're missing doesn't matter.
  11.
  12. What you're missing is pointless.
  13.
  14. You need to be able to step away from all the technology for just a bit. It will clear your mind. Reading used to be considered frivolous. Now, it's one of the best things you can do. Turn it off. Grab a book. Read.
  15.
  16. The first thing you'll notice is the lack of notifications. The technological world we live in has us locked into a sort of permanent vigilance--almost paranoia. We're afraid that no one likes what we posted. What if I miss something important?
  17.
  18. You won't. What you're missing is pointless.
  19.
  20. At first, reading will be difficult. Nothing good is easy. That's what makes it good. We don't have to work for content on Facebook, or any other services. It's fed to us. We're being spoon-fed entertainment by Mark Zuckerburg like infants who have an inability to keep their minds occupied and actually *do* something.
  21.
  22. Then, eventually, you'll feel a sense of relaxation, almost like coming down from an adrenaline rush. This is what happens when you stop taking in information and letting it drip slowly out of your mind for a minute. All it takes is a few minutes of thinking.
  23.
  24. This won't change your life. And you shouldn't necessarily stop using Facebook, or any other service I mentioned. But I beg that you step away, take a deep breath, pick up a book, and think. At peace and accompanied only by your thoughts, you will feel serenity, a kind of peace that has eluded you since you let social drivel seep into your life.
  25.
  26. What you're missing is pointless.
  27.
  28. What you have is incredible. The very human condition is a miraculous conglomeration of various timings, cells, and pulses. Through one single event, you came into existence. Humanity came into existence. And with humanity came an idea. And from that another. Our brains are capable of processing thousands of times more information than the best computer, something we built using our brains themselves. The human mind is incredible. Please, fill your mind with things that matter. Things you care about. Things that are important. Your mind is capable of so much more than processing the latest comments on a Facebook status.
  29.
  30. Use your potential, and actually go out and *do* something. Create something. Read something. Learn something. Play something. Do something that has a point.
