sad chara fic i decided to write out of sadness

Waking up with your head just laying on the desk has become more of a common occurrence of late. It seems that all you’ve been doing for the past couple of days has been looking at art of the one you love most in life, Chara. He’s the light of your life. You want to spend every day with him… but sadly, he’s not real.
This is a fact of life. If only it could be different.
Sleepily rubbing your eyes and letting out a yawn, you head to the bathroom to brush your teeth.
Walking back to your desk afterwards, you notice something a bit off.
An image of Chara that you didn’t have up, or at least, you thought you didn’t. That’s a normal thing for you after all, clicking on stuff in your tired state and just forgetting it. Strange, you didn’t recognize it. Ah well, it was probably downloaded during one of your sadder nights.
After all, tending to forget those on purpose has become normal.
It’s really pretty, though. Really, really pretty. His red eyes look like they’re glowing with passion. His hair looks like a wavy mess, with a couple of little curls forming on his longer strands. He’s got these cute little freckles even. It’s so handsome. Your heart can’t stop beating while looking at it. But then again, it always beats for him. He’s the reason you’re even still around in the first place, after all. Without him, you wouldn’t be here.
Closing your eyes, you just think about how wonderful it would be if you could be with him right now. You just hope. That maybe he can be here. Somehow.

A long silence fills your ears and your mind. It’s really peaceful. It’s been a long, long time since you’ve felt this way.
You’re glad.

“You are so pretty. Partner. So, so pretty.”
…Did that come from behind you?
“Hah. I can tell you’re confused. A little scared, too… but that is fine. I can understand why you would be.”
“After all, it is not every day you finally get to be with somebody who isn’t real.”
‘Chara?’
You turn around to see him. He looks just like that image on your screen.
“Yes, it’s me. It is so fantastic to hear that voice of yours calling my name. I love to hear it. I have heard it over and over again. You say it in your sleep, and I always listened when you did. I have pounded and clawed at what separates me and you over and over again. Today, I broke it.”
It’s him. It’s really him.
But you need to make sure.
‘Chara. I need to say something. So that I know for sure, it’s actually you.’
“Yes, partner?”
‘Do you remember the night I was laying in bed, and you thought you were next to me? You said you heard me say your name while I was asleep. So, I’m assuming you heard me when I was in bed, “talking” to you.’

He’s silent for a moment.
“I did.”
“I remember you crying, and I was so confused. But than I heard you say it. Your voice was shaking.”
Chara let out a sigh. This isn’t pleasant for him to remember.
“You said… ‘Is it okay if I cry?’ Then, you turned around. I was not there. I should have been there.”
“I will never know why you felt like I was there that night. Knowing this awful existence, it was probably a punishment for something.”
“At the very least, I’m here now. Even though I couldn’t be there that night. I am so sorry that I could not comfort you.”
With that, you couldn’t hold on anymore. You cried. But this time, he was there to help.
He was there now. You’d never be alone again.
He wouldn’t let that happen.
