  1. Battling the fierce wind and driving rain, Mr. Miyagi ran toward the ruins of the shrine. Daniel followed him. As they got to it, the wind ripped away the collapsed roof. They could see Sato. He was stuck under a big piece of wood. He was alive.

  3. Quickly, Daniel and Mr. Miyagi went to rescue him. Sato couldn't believe they would help him, though. He was sure Mr. Miyagi would take the opportunity to kill him. When Daniel saw the fear in Sato's face, he knew that Sato didn't know Mr. Miyagi very well.

  5. The only way Mr. Miyagi could rescue Sato was to chop the wood that held him. Daniel remembered the picture of Sato in the airport, chopping the twelve pieces of wood. He wondered if Mr. Miyagi could do it. This one log was much thicker than all twelve pieces Sato had chopped.

  7. Sato closed his eyes, expecting the death blow. Mr. Miyagi raised his hand and then slashed it through the air. "Kiiaiiiii!" he cried. His hand chopped the wood with a fierce blow, and the whole beam broke in two pieces. As soon as they could remove the pieces of broken beam, Daniel and Mr. Miyagi helped Sato stand and walk to the storm shelter. Sato could not believe his good fortune. When the three of them were safely inside, Sato bowed deeply to Mr. Miyagi and Daniel. The people of the village were surprised. So was Daniel. He knew that Sato's bow of respect meant that Sato was no longer angry at Mr. Miyagi. Their battle was done. Mr. Miyagi had won!
