41. When Captain Amazing (Kinnear) is kidnapped by Casanova Frankenstein (Rush) a group of superheroes combine together to create a plan. But these aren't normal superheroes. They are individuals who are not good enough to be real superheroes. Now, the group who include such heroes as Mr. Furious (Stiller), The Shoveller (Macy) and The Blue Raja (Azaria) must put all the powers together to save everyone they know and love.
 42. In Champion City, would be superheroes like The Shoveler, The Blue Raja and Mr. Furious can't seem to make a difference and impress either the city or its greatest superhero, Captain Amazing. However, when Captain Amazing is captured by his greatest enemy, Cassanova Frankenstein, these stumblebum heroes must join with other superhero hopefuls to save the Captain and the city.
 43. This was nothing special, but not particularly bad either at the same time. A bunch of super heroes who are average to say the least fight to save the commercialised top superhero, played by the ever-excellent Greg Kinnear (superb in As Good As It Gets).

There are some predictable and silly, yet sometimes enjoyable gags throughout the film, not the least being the superheroes themselves; including Shovelman and a man called the Spleen, whose special powers consist of his remarkable level of flatulence.

Fun but hardly intellectually taxing.
 44. This is one film i'm glad my sister didn't watch with me, because I know she wouldn't have really liked it, and that would have put me off. I was expecting laugh out loud, but what I got was a sore jaw from smiling so much, it's as tongue in cheek as it gets. I'm not a comic book fan, that's not to say I hate comic-books, still I believe if you like comic-books, then you will get something out of this. Being a Ben Stiller film is what attracted me the most, his performance was good, but sometimes I felt that having a PG rating limited it, the cast were perfect for an R rated movie. I think the R was avoided as to appeal to kids, but it could have been so much more. Still not bad, definitely worth renting for a wet afternoon.
 45. The movie will disappoint people expecting a genuine superhero epic or an over-the-top spoof. But those in the mood for an offbeat satire with a gifted cast will have a surprisingly good time.
 46. The Mystery Men originated as the team name of misfit Super Heroes led by "The Flaming Carrot." "Flaming Carrot Comics," by Bob Burden, was originally published by Aardvark-Vanaheim, then by Renegade Press and Dark Horse Comics between 1984 and 1993. The book has since relaunched in 2005 with Image Comics.

From the official Mysterymen website:

"...all you really need is a snappy costume and a cool name for the Mysterymen, the human cannon fodder of the war on crime. At their peak, they numbered about 30 (The Dirty Thirty) but it's hard to come up with an exact figure on them because of high casualty rates, the highest of any superhero team in the history of the medium."

Original comic book members:

Flaming Carrot, The Shoveler, Jackpot, Mr.Furious, Screwball, Captain Attack, Bondo Man, Jumpin' Jehosaphat, Red Rover, The Strangler, The Spleen, the Metro Marauder, Hummer, Disc Man, Jumo the Magnificent, the Whisperer, Mystic Hand, Star Shark, the Zeke.

Members invented for the movie:

The Bowler, the Blue Raja, the Sphinx, Invisible Boy

In the comics, the Mysterymen have also teamed up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - twice. a5c7b9f00b
