- The game takes place on a 10x10 grid of squares, numbered 1-10 on the Y axis and A-J on the X axis.
- Each 5x5 grid is a Quadrant, called NW, NE, SW, SE.
- Spaces may either be open ocean or blocked terrain, such as land or icebergs.
- Players start with 1 of each ship of each type.
- Ships have Hull Points (HP) and Move Value (MV)
- Ships occupy 1 space and may be placed in any open space on the map.
- All ships have deck guns that can deal 1 damage to any space on the map.
- When a ship takes damage equal to its HP, it sinks.
- Ships can have upgrades which can deal extra damage, reveal enemies, and evade detection.
- You only need to declare that you are performing an action if it specifies you must.
- The ship types are: (the standard team is 1 of each)
- Carrier (5 HP, 1 MV), with Bombers and Flares
- Battleship (4 HP, 2MV), with Artillery and Sonar
- Cruiser (3 HP, 3 MV), with Sonar
- Submarine (3 HP, 3 MV), with Silence
- and Destroyer (2HP, 4 MV), with Torpedoes
- Each turn you take three phases in order: Maneuvering, Firing, Command.
- Maneuvering: You may order a single ship to move its MV value in spaces in a cardinal direction. Ships cannot cross blocked terrain.
- Firing: You may order one or more of your ships to fire their guns on any single space on the map. Reveal the location of each firing ship and declare the total damage. The enemy must declare a miss, hit, or sink.
- Command: Activate one or more abilities on a single ship, detailed below.
- Offensive Upgrades
- Artillery: Passive. The ship causes +1 damage when firing. Effect does not stack.
- Torpedoes: Select a space adjacent to the ship and a direction. It moves 3 spaces and hits any ship or terrain in its path, or detonates after 3 spaces. It deals 2 damage on a direct hit, and 1 damage to any adjacent spaces.
- Mines: Select a space adjacent to the ship and place a bomb there. You may detonate it at any point. It deals 2 damage on a direct hit, and 1 damage to any adjacent spaces.
- Detection Abilities
- Sonar: Select a space in the same quadrant. Enemy must reveal the location of all enemy ships there.
- Flares: Select a space in the same quadrant. Enemy player must state the location and identity of any ships in or adjacent to that space.
- Radiotap: Select a tonnage of ship (Max HP). If the enemy has a ship with that tonnage, they must reveal 2 of 3 pieces of information about it: the row, column, or quadrant.
- Beacon: Select a space adjacent to the ship and drop a beacon there. You may activate it any time. When activated, the enemy player must state the location and identity of any ships in or adjacent to that space.
- Evasion Abilities
- Silence: Submarine-only. The ship may move 1 space in any cardinal direction. Effect does not stack.
- Streamlined: Passive. The ship may move +1 space during manuvres. Effect does not stack.
- Amphibious: The ship can move through blocked spaces but cannot end their turn on one.
- Fireship: When the ship is destroyed, it causes 2 damage to any ships adjacent to it.
- Carrier Abilities
- Bombers: Carrier-only. Select a space on the map and use the Torpedo or Mine as if you were there.
- Spotters: Carrier-only. Select a quadrant. Enemy player must reveal the location of all enemy ships there.
- Fighters: Carrier-only. Select a quadrant and place a squad there. The next ability to target that quadrant (not space) is interrupted.
