  1. Night Gaunt - Making Of
  2.
  3.
  4. Core concept: 【Tall and busty】;【 Full-body rubber suit】; 【Rubbery body】
  5. This time I'll be talking about one of the monsters of the abyss, the "Night Gaunt."
  6. The original rough idea has developed to a point that it deserves to be described in greater detail.
  7.
  8. The monster's origins lay in the Cthulhu Mythos. The author of the Mythos, Lovecraft, based the monster on a nightmare he had as a child in which a monster that seemed to be covered in a rubbery skin appeared - and where its head should have been there was nothing. Another name for the Night Gaunt could be Night Demon/Oni.
  9.
  10. Many gods make use of the Night Gaunts and it seems that their method of attack is tickling.
  11. That may seem a laughable idea for an attack, but as the victim is tickled their mind slips deeper into insanity until they are finally dragged into the abyss... or meet some other fate.
  12.
  13.
  14. Given the description of a rubbery skin, the first detail that solidified was to have the Night Gaunt wearing a full body rubber suit - at least in appearance. Given that the male would have a grotesque form that joined with the female to create the final form of the creature - as is typical of the Cthulhu Mythos - at first I had considered having the male become the rubber suit. However, given the "tickling" attack I decided to instead have the Night Gaunt appear to tickle it's victims, when in fact it was coating them in a fluid which would reshape their body. Given that the male would become a Night Gaunt himself, I decided that he should change to have the same abilities as the female.
  15. And of course the reason the male victims of Night Gaunts smile lasciviously is because they are being tickled by the female.
  16. Furthermore within the world of the Encyclopedia the females become reliant upon their mates - obeying the thoughts and lust of the male - which is fitting with the original story having them act as servants to the gods. Their lack of a head, and therefore a face, also makes it impossible to read their intentions.

  24. Initially I had been thinking to color them green. However a purple color had a better connection with their "night" theme, and within the Cthulhu creatures there were others that I wanted to save green for. Thus in the final form their color was changed to purple.
  25.
  26. The Night Gaunt females transform their mates into a set of massive tentacle-like appendages which attach to their body from behind.
  27. The only female portions of the body are the body itself and the horns, with the tentacles, wings, and tail belonging to the male.
  28.
  29. The mated females are covered in a rubber suit-like substance which is created by the male. The substance completely engulfs the female's body, meaning that she has given up her entire self to her mate to be groped and toyed with at any time. The wings of the Night Gaunt also belong to the male, meaning that the female has also given up control of where she goes to her mate.
  30.
  31. In the illustration the only tail and wings that can be seen belong to the male, however the female does have her own. Unmated females make use of their own tail and wings until a mate can be found. Once mated the wings and tail are magically withdrawn and the male takes over. The hand-like parts of the wings on females are smaller and more delicate, the "fingers" ending in claws or talons.
  32.
  33.
  34. The Night Gaunt isn't simply appearing to wear a rubber suit, but rather the wings, tail, and tentacles also appear to be made from the same rubbery substance. When coloring the illustrations for a Night Gaunt I do my best to show this.
  35.
  36. The female body excretes a mucus which eventually hardens to form their rubber suit, however even with this stiff layer forming a suit more fluid can still be excreted through it.
  37. Thus the rubber suit is covered in a slick of fresh mucus which makes the surface more reflective. The mucus also releases some magical light of its own.
  38. The female body produces the greatest volume of fluid from her fingertips and breasts, which makes them seem to glow from the soft light produced.
  39. Additionally the horns and tails glow from excreted mucus, which means that in pitch black those specific parts of the body appear to be floating in the void.
  40. The smoke-like substance that comes from the Night Gaunt's back is something I designed to be a bit like a scarf. When producing the mucus which coats the Night Gaunt's body, excess magic is burnt off to create the smoke which trails after them.
  41. I think touching it would cause you to be coated with mucus.
  42.
  43. The male, who is on the back of the female, uses tentacles to wrap tightly around the waist of the female. With this anchor it is then able to thrust inside of her from behind while using other tentacles to also grope her chest.
  44. Furthermore, tentacles cover the mouth of the female's face, making it even more difficult to read her expression. And though it cannot be see, it seems that the female will often be fellating the tentacles.
  45. The tip of the tail is sharp, but it can be opened to reveal another tail which releases greater amounts of mucus.
  46. It is even able to shoot out mucus and can be inserted into the abdomen of the female.
  47. The large hands on the wings are the hands of the male, and just like the female they excrete mucus which causes them to glow.
  48. When not being used for flight the wings/hands are used to grope the body of the female!
