50. A group of men trap wild animals in Africa and sell them to zoos before the arrival of a female wildlife photographer threatens to change their ways.
 51. John Wayne and his ensemble cast cavort over the African landscape filling orders from zoos for wild animals. Bruce Cabot plays "the Indian", a womanizing sharpshooter who is gored by a rhino in the opening scenes of the film. This becomes a running theme through the movie; their bad luck in catching rhinos, and provides the climactic ending chase. While Bruce is in the hospital, Elsa Martinelli shows up as a woman photographer from a Swiss zoo, and John wants to send her packing. She strongarms the Duke into letting her stay by promising that her zoo will buy most of their animals this season if she's allowed to go along on the hunts and take photos. Hardy Kruger, Gerard Blain, Michelle Girardon and Valentin de Vargas round out the group. They traipse over the African landscape capturing animals; Elsa also has a running gag where she collects baby elephants as the movie goes along. In the end she's acquired three of them.
 52. As I've written before in other reviews, the great success of King Solomon's Mines and The African Queen led to a demand by at least the American movie going public for a little more realism in films involving Africa. Tarzan films and other such stuff from the studio back lots just weren't going to cut it any more. Hatari is one of several films to follow in the wake of the two I previously mentioned and it's one of the best.

John Wayne, Red Buttons, Bruce Cabot, Valentin De Vargas, and Hardy Krueger are a group of animal trappers working for Michele Girardon. Cabot gets gored while trying to get a loop on a wild rhinoceros. While he's incapacitated, Gerard Blain joins this crew.

Another addition is photographer Elsa Martinelli who's a tenderfoot in the jungle and a lot of the comic situations stem from that fact. We've got her getting John Wayne interested and Michele Girardon has some of the other guys in an uproar over her. I won't say who she winds up with.

Howard Hawks directs some nice comic moments here. A running gag is how Elsa Martinelli keeps on getting adopted by stray baby elephants. Red Buttons devises a Rube Goldberg scheme to capture wild monkeys that should not be missed.

But I think some of the best scenes are simply those showing the trappers going about their dangerous job of obtaining wild jungle animals for the zoo. These men are professionals who take pride in their work, a running theme in a lot of Hawks films. Incidentally Hatari was nominated for Best Color Cinematography, losing to Lawrence of Arabia. No more sound stage Africa for the public.

I've often wondered if John Wayne was talked into this film by William Holden who at that time was the owner of the Safari Club in Kenya. Possibly this film was offered to Holden, I'm sure he also would have done a creditable job. Holden and Wayne were very good friends and if I'm right, Holden gave the Duke a real good tip. This is definitely one of John Wayne's best efforts.

Hatari is a bit dated by technology now. Tranquilizer guns were not invented yet. If they had been, the trappers would have had a lot easier time of it. Still it's a fabulous treat.
 53. A lot of animals suffered during the process of making this movie. You can watch them being dragged, chained and detained. I couldn't watched it longer after 50 minutes and was optimistic to be well entertained at the beginning. Some people reviewed it as a family movie. Sure - if you like going with your children in to the zoo and watching mentally burned animals walking up and down or if you having pig for Christmas dinner after you watched Babe then go for it. But if you really love animals spare yourself watching it.

 55. Chicago Tribune, Monday, June 18, 1962:

TOWER TICKER

by Herb Lyon

What they won't do to sell movie tickets these days. When John Wayne, Red Buttons, and Elsa Martinelli safari in June 29 in a Zebra striped plane to promote their flicker, "Hatari," they'll book an extra room at the Ambassador East: For their co-star--a cheetah! And some places won't even rent to dogs!

____________________________

The film played the Roosevelt theatre, opening Friday, June 29, 1962, for several weeks. Chicago Tribune, Friday, February 9, 1962, s. 3, p. 14, c. 4:

LOOKING AT HOLLYWOOD

by Hedda Hopper

Paramount has chosen John Wayne's "Hatari" as its 50th anniversary picture--serial numberrr 10, 371. The studio's first release 50 years ago was "Queen Elizabeth," with Sarah Bernhardt and Lou Tellegen. It was filmed in France and brought here by Adolph Zukor. . . .

____________________________ I don't know but would love an answer to this. d6a2afd33b
