  1. It takes place in the far future, after mankind has expanded out into the Milky Way galaxy. Upon our exploration of the galaxy, we encounter another species of sentient space-faring race, but this species also knew how to use magic, which is still unexplained by science (in the story). Once humanity learns all the secrets of magic from this alien race, we promptly attempt to commit xenocide (which is the deliberate killing of an entire species), and come very very very very very very close to succeeding, so much so to the point that there isn't enough of the aliens left to sustain their population.
  2.
  3. Space-time/reality is one thing in this universe, called "the Fabric". Basically, everything that exists, and everything that has ever happened or ever will happen, is in some way woven into the Fabric. The Fabric is made up of what have been dubbed "Strings", and everything is also attached to a String. Now, the Fabric and Strings are woven by what those who have seen believe to be entities, and have been dubbed the Ashieaeri by humanity/mankind, and are seen and revered as gods.
  4.
  5. And the people who have seen the Ashieaeri are called Prophets. Once magic was introduced to the human species, as in a human used magic, all throughout the species a new recessive gene in humanity appeared. This gene allowed for the birth of Prophets. Prophets are able to open windows/gaps in the Fabric, and wander throughout space and time as an observer, though looking into the future is a strange, and dangerous experience.
  6.
  7. Right now, there are 4 different types of mages/wizards, 2 are common, 2 are exceedingly rare.
  8.
  9. The first common kind are technomages, born on or brought to Earth, which is now little more than a dead rock floating through space. They are able to perform magic with the augmentation of technology, all technomages are are least 25% robotics/cybernetics, which includes half of their brain and a limb. They are able to be mages because of their incredible intelligence, and life devoted to study and knowledge.
  10.
  11. The second type of mages are more akin to druids or shamans, they are Spirit-mages. They are born on the planet Naeaus, a lush jungle/forest planet. These mages, in order to use magic, go on journeys to the spirit world (which is yet to be explained by science), and find a spirit of whatever kind of magic they wish to use. They then prove to that spirit that they are stronger than them, so the spirit is forced to allow the spirit-mage to use the spirits powers as they see fit.
  12.
  13. The final two types of mages are exceedingly rare.
  14.
  15. One is a Prophet-Born, or as you can guess, the children of those with the Prophet gene. They are rare, for as soon as someone is found to have the gene, which can be as early as birth, they are taken to the isolated moon at an unknown location where the Prophets are trained, before being sent whereever they may go. Prophets are often found in their youth, before they have the chance to reproduce, and once one enters training to be a Prophet, they are celibate for the rest of their life. Prophet-Born inherit the ability to interact with the Fabric, but not in the same way. Prophet-Born are able to grasp the Strings of the Fabric, and manipulate and alter them ever so slightly. They are the second most powerful kinds of mages.
  16.
  17. The second are those born of half alien (species unnamed by me so far) and half human. They are beyond rare, because the alien species is on the edge of extinction, and avoids humanity at all costs. They are the only ones able to perform anything close to the "True Magic" that the aliens could, and are immensely powerful. They are feared and hated universally, with the exception of by the aliens.
  18.
  19. When Prophets explore outside the Milky Way galaxy, they find something disturbing. If they journey far enough so that they can see the entire Milky Way and the surrounding universe in one view, they see that the ENTIRE VISIBLE UNIVERSE outside of the Milky Way is roiling in constant creation and destruction. Worlds and galaxies and stars are constantly being made, then destroyed, and the materials from their destruction being made into something else. Over and over. And no one knows why, the entire conundrum being dubbed simply "the Mystery", and it has been decided that it is the purpose of the Prophets and all mages whose cause is that of humanity to unravel the Mystery.
