Sweet Briar has encountered chaos and has been essentially without leadership in Admissions, Finances, Development, Marketing, and Food Services since Rice was first Chair of the Finance Committee and later when he became chairman of the board. He is a savvy businessman and could easily have fixed this situation a dozen different ways, but he did not. Those on the board who actively sought solutions were isolated, minimized, and asked to resign by Rice.
