HL2E3 Fan Script, Chapter 4.5

The Combine cargo carrier drifted from universe to universe, before finding itself standing on solid ground beneath a smokey sky.
It had zero comprehension of what had just happened, the only functions of it were to lift things for familiar things that move and pummel unfamiliar things that move.

Speaking of unfamiliar things that move, it didn't like the changing display of the box thing it was carrying, now showing "0:20".
It gave it a good whack with its claw, sending the box thing sailing off.
The carrier at least liked what it was standing on, it looked Combine-ish, a dark featureless bridge of massive size.

The carrier noticed an explosion from where the box thing was; it knew not to trust that thing!
A large hole had been made in the bridge, and out of the smokey haze preventing more than a hundreds of metres of vision came a huge four-legged machine with massive guns.
The carrier tried to ward off the machine, seeing it was of Combine make, but went unnoticed; and the artillery-walker fell into the hole, two legs in and two legs out. The artillery-walker slipped a little further, threatening to fall into the water below; so the carrier grabbed hold of a leg, and pulled with all its might.

Creatures of many races but all in Combine military garb ran out of the artillery-walker, even an advisor. As the last of the crew made it to safety, gravity won over, and the artillery-walker as well as the carrier fell into the murky depths.
The carrier blacked out as it short circuited, tripping a switch.

It booted up with no body or senses, information instead being sent directly to its circuits.
A Combine computer attempted to communicate with its circuits, struggling with the language barrier as the carrier only understood English:

"UNIT NAME: CARRIER-532 much good save many FRIEND:
Error: "COMBINE" is of class "CulturalEntity", attempted to use as string
For saving many new body UNIT NAME:"

The carrier was incredibly confused, before suddenly being turned off. When it next booted up, it found itself in an unfamiliar body.
It had four legs and two claws as before, but far larger and built out of various pieces of this world's technology; one being the bottom half of the artillery walker that fell in the ocean.
Now 10 metres tall and wide, built of the strongest steel available to Combine industries, and moved by hydraulics, the carrier was an immensely overpowered beast of burden.

Still not understanding whatever language was spoken on this world, the carrier was confused by instructions it was given, making it useless as part of the industry on the planet.
But whenever anything went wrong, the huge carrier would do its best to set things right, much like a child in a sandcastle.

With scanning of its circuits, the Combine found a name for this English-programmed machine that had become a protector, rather than a tool: Carrier 532 of Earth, a name that made no sense in the local language as only the pronounciation and not the translation was known.
