meta knight in smash

So I’ve had “Meta Knight” or “MK” in my online username for years, since 2012, and he is one of my favorite Kirby characters, but my history with him in Smash is kinda interesting. There isn’t really a point to this pastebin, I just kinda made it cause I was bored and I thought maybe some people might be interested in reading.

I didn’t play Meta Knight in Brawl. I never got into competitive since that was when I was like 9-13, but even elementary school kids knew that he was completely broken. You know, you could win matches by just spamming nado. Playing MK with your friends would lose you said friends (kinda exaggerating but kinda not even). So obviously I never played him and stayed away from the “cheapest character in the game” (lol).

I was a Game and Watch main forever, I played him in Brawl and he was my first competitive main in Smash 4 when I started getting into it in... I want to say late 2016? I started getting tired of getting bodied by sword characters though so I looked for someone else to play. Then I found out Meta Knight could kill anyone at 25% with the ladder and fell in love instantly. Finally I actually played the character in my username lol

Ladders got nerfed in 1.1.5, and I was sad, but I didn’t drop him and mained him until the end along with DK who I picked up later. That said though, I discovered speedrunning in late 2017 and that basically killed my Smash career, along with my local scene not being the greatest. I haven’t returned to full tryharding in Smash ever since and probably never will, but occasionally I get spurts of motivation to try and improve, such as right now. That’s part of the reason I’m even writing this post.

I guess I’ll digress a bit and talk about my characters in Ultimate. Near the end of S4 I started playing a ton of Miis and Swordfighter was always super fun to me, so I got really hype when he got massively buffed in Ultimate. I mained him for the first while, but then people learned how to not die to Hero’s Spin at 60 and just got better at the game in general. After that I didn’t play much competitive for a few months and kinda bounced around between Mario/Diddy (similar to Smash 4, which I was actually decent at - I was the best player in my high school), Wolf (fun cuz busted) and Jigglypuff (fun cuz not useless and can actually rest things). I didn’t really have a definitive main until very recently, which brings me back to MK.

When Ult first came out there was a lot of hype around MK because of his ladder to nado combo, but then it ended up being not nearly as broken as people thought. Initially I didn’t like him either because I couldn’t get free followups off dash attack anymore, and I didn’t really give him a second chance.

Fast forward like 8 months and now I actually love playing Ultimate MK and I would definitely call him my main once again. Funny how that works. It helps I’m more used to the game’s engine - still prefer Smash 4’s but I get how the game’s supposed to be played now, something I didn’t understand on launch at all. I still miss dash attack and easier ladders, but in the time I took off from the game people found more stuff and I have a lot of Abadango and S2H VODs to watch for inspiration.

Anyway rambling mostly over, I just found it funny how I always come back to MK. It’s not even any kind of character loyalty, he just clicks really well with me for some reason lol. These days I’d say I dual main MK/Puff, but Puff doesn’t come out that often just cause she has so many awful matchups lol. Secondaries are Wolf for matchups where I need kill power and Mario for heavies.

Friday I’m hopefully going to my one tourney every six months lol. Generally I’m always busy with other commitments Friday/Saturday/Sunday which is why I don’t go to stuff otherwise. The tourney is our weekly which usually gets 40-50 entrants so if I can get top 16 I’ll be really happy already.
