56. Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler are three scientists at Columbia University in New York City. When their grant expires, the guys are fired and they go into business as a ghost extermination company called "Ghostbusters". Their first customer is orchestra cello player Dana Barrett, who was scared out of her apartment on the 22nd floor of a high rise apartment building on Central Park West. It seems that Dana's neighbor, Louis Tully, is also being affected by the strange happenings in the apartment building. Armed with proton guns, the Ghostbusters become wildly popular, and they are joined by Winston Zeddmore, who is looking for a job with good pay. Overzealous Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) agent Walter Peck thinks the Ghostbusters are frauds, and he has the Ghostbusters put in jail. Peck is forced to believe the Ghostbusters when New York City is put under siege by an ancient Sumerian God named Gozer the Gozerian, who is channeled through the apartment building that Dana and Louis live in, and the mayor has no choice but to let the Ghostbusters out of jail to face Gozer.
 57. Three odd-ball scientists get kicked out of their cushy positions at a university in New York City where they studied the occult. They decide to set up shop in an old firehouse and become Ghostbusters, trapping pesky ghosts, spirits, haunts, and poltergeists for money. They wise-crack their way through the city, and stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, one which will release untold evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters are called on to save the Big Apple.
 58. For the first time in my life, I watched this film a few weeks ago, and what did I think of it? Well, I can say that I enjoyed this film.

I liked the characters - how they acted, it was funny and entertaining.

I also enjoyed that the city was under attack by a powerful force, and it was up to the Ghostbusters to stop the evil.

And yes, the classic music that everyone already knows, is still catchy to this day.

My final thoughts:

This was a fun movie and I think you would like it. Another great classic film from the 80s.
 59. Every time I sit down to revisit Ghostbusters, and that's not too often, sadly, I keep forgetting how incredible and richly funny this movie was. So much so, it should never be considered an adventure or supernatural action movie up front; it should, by and far, be under the comedy section. And I'm not just talking about the key and well-known shots as the funniest ones occur when there's barely anything on screen but Bill Murray's comic genius delivery.

While I might have seen this in theatres – I was only ten when released, I don't recall. Unfortunately, my family viewed very few films back in the early eighties and I didn't start my movie obsession until the late eighties. I know I caught it somewhere, sometime following the release and did like it, but never, ever appreciated it until I got older. I don't think I was alone in that appreciation of this fantastic film.

Yes, the movie made a ton. Sure, it was a bona fide summer blockbuster. But, I think people just expected such quality back then, they probably had no idea how influential, how deep the lines and comedy was or the impact. For, I see dozens of summer movies over the past and recent decade or so, that are strictly made for profit. Made to be released, one after the next, while not caring it will fizzle after a couple of weeks to a month and then featured in a Redbox a couple of months later. Movies with very little heart inserted, too much CGI and less care taken. Despite just "being a comedy," Ghostbusters was made correctly, down to the core.

Three paranormal doctors/buddies at a university find themselves out on the street in New York just as their ghost theories become reality. Hilariously gathering the funds to make it big in the Big Apple, they open the Ghostbusters pest control business and take off…eventually.

One of their first clients is Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver,) a tough, but vulnerable broad who has an extra visitor in her refrigerator. While 1/3 'Buster at the time, Peter (Murray,) is more infatuated with her than her ghost fridge, they do follow up on her story while simultaneously capturing ghosts in the city and rise to fame.

Her storyline might be more of final clue for the upside in business for the Ghostbusters and then things get real.

Above all else in this movie was the flawless performance from Murray. While every single actor involved was also fantastic, namely Harold Ramis as Egon and Weaver's Dana, Murray's Peter was pitch-perfect. His deadpan humor was so great, that I almost feel guilty for not appreciating Dan Aykroyd's Raymond role more, or Rick Moranis and Annie Potts in their third-tier, but important characters.

Don't get me wrong; on the whole, they all did great. I just couldn't keep my focus much further than Murray during this film.

Beyond Murray and the wonderful supporting cast, was the infamous and beloved title song ('in' due to the countless times it was played,) a good score, special effects decent for the times and fairly good cinematography.

This movie screamed what I love about Summer Blockbusters, but haven't seen in about two decades. Sure, there have been plenty of great films; fun and exciting and memorable films. But, rarely will I see one that's more heart than just trying for the Box Office dollar. I miss these types of movies.

Well, I don't have to any more. For, I bought this one on BluRay and can revisit the "good ole days" any time I feel like it. Recommended!
 60. Ghostbusters is a hoot. It's Murray's picture, and in a triumph of mind over matter, he blows away the film's boring special effects with his one-liners. Spotting a lusty, totally transformed, fire-breathing Slgourney Weaver, whose body has been overtaken by a spirit, Murray walks past her saying, "That's a new look for you, isn't it?" Thank you, Bill. And don't get outta here, you knucklehead. We like you in this kind of movie.
 61. When three parapsychologists—Doctors Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis)—are fired from their positions at New York's Columbia University, they decide to set up shop together and become "ghostbusters" dedicated to trapping ghosts and other nasty spirits. Unfortunately, they're mostly considered to be frauds, until an ancient Sumerian god, Gozer the Gozerian, takes up residence in the high-rise apartment of Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver), and it seems that only the Ghostbusters can save the Big Apple. The script for the motion picture Ghostbusters was written by co-stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, who also wrote the sequel Ghostbusters II (1989) (1989). The film has been twice been novelized as Ghostbusters (1984) by Larry Milne and again as Ghostbusters: The Supernatural Spectacular (1985) by Richard Mueller (the movie's popularity also led to two animated television series, The Real Ghost Busters (1986) (later renamed Slimer! And the Real Ghostbusters (1988)) (1986-1991) and Extreme Ghostbusters (1997) (1997) as well as numerous computer and video games. A remake/parody, Ghostbusters (2016)—complete with new-character cameos of the original cast—was released in 2016. The Board of Regents decided to terminate their grant on the grounds that their theories were "the worst kind of popular tripe," their methods were "sloppy," their conclusions were "highly questionable," and they are all-around "poor scientists." Venkman in particular was accused of using his position with the Psychology Department as some kind of "dodge or hustle." The slime that was found in the library and other places that were haunted by ghosts is described as "ectoplasmic residue," a substance that is supposed to exist on the etheric (or spiritual) plane and can remain behind in the wake of a spiritual, i.e., ghostly, manifestation. The story provides no further explanation as to why it exists or how it seeps into the realm of the living. Perhaps it signifies amniotic fluid, in that spirits emulate birth when traversing the etheric plane.

It was sold by the jar in toy stores to children. Zuul the Gatekeeper, Gozer the Sumerian god of Destruction, and Vinz Clortho the Keymaster were all made up for the movie. However, following the release of Ghostbusters, fans made up a number of legacies, rituals and mythologies about them, none of which have any true history. The song is "Magic" by Mick Smiley. However, the answer to this question is frequently disputed by those complaining that the start of "Magic" as heard on the soundtrack album sounds nothing like the track used in the film. This is because the film uses only the second half of the song, which sounds much different from the first half. Start playing the track at about 2:20 in to hear it as it was in the film. Gozer gave the Ghostbusters a choice of the form Gozer will become as "The Destroyer". If The Ghostbusters thought and had chosen for example: The Joker from Batman, Gozer would reappear in that form to destroy them. The Ghostbusters had to clear their minds and not think of anything or anyone that would appear and destroy them. But Ray had thought of the Mr. Stay Puft Marshmellow Man and Gozer reappeared as the form chosen by Ray, which Ray believed couldn't possibly destroy them, as kids would toast marshmellows at camp fires and The Ghostbusters used their proton packs to zap at Mr. Stay Puft/Gozer and set Mr. Stay Puft/Gozer on fire. Ray's remark to Louis in the movie is "You have been a participant in the biggest interdimensional cross rip since the Tunguska blast of 1909!" First, the writers got the year wrong; the event occurred on June 30th, 1908. Ray's talking about a possible meteor strike in southern Central Russia that had a huge blast area. More info can be read here. After climbing up the 22 flights to the penthouse and going out on the roof, the Ghostbusters find that Dana (Sigourney Weaver) and Louis (Rick Moranis) have been transformed into Zuul and Vinz Clortho, two huge demonic dogs guarding Gozer's gateway. Slowly, Gozer comes sauntering through the gate. Ray orders her to stop all supernatural activity and return to her own realm. Gozer asks him if he is a god, and Ray stupidly replies, "No," so Gozer tosses all four of them across the roof, almost knocking them off the ledge. The Ghostbusters neutralize her with their proton packs, and Gozer disappears, but her voice can be heard ordering them to choose the form she is to take in order to destroy the world. Everyone tries to clear their minds, but an image of the Stay Puft marshmallow man pops into Ray's head. In that giant form, the Traveler comes walking down the street, laying wreck to everything around her. Egon suggests that they may be able to close the gate by zapping it with their proton packs and allowing the particle streams to cross. The plan is successful, Mr Stay Puft is reduced to great gobs of melted marshmallow crème, and Dana and Louis are released from their dog bodies. In the final scenes, the Ghostbusters emerge from the building to the cheers of the crowd, Dana kisses Venkman, and they all drive off in Ecto 1. For the UK television release, approximately six scenes were shortened and swearwords removed. 7cb1d79195
