- Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PC, PS3, X360, WiiU) <- first WiiU game I'm reviewing!
- Setting: (4/5)
- A modern city, maybe 20 years from now. A new technology is discovered, the Augmentations. Man can make themselves stronger, faster, even smarter, at will. if they have enough money to pay for it, that is.
- The gap between the rich and the poor keeps increasing, and on completely different scale. Large companies rule the world more so than ever. And there is a price to pay. Neuropozyne. A drug to prevent the rejection of the mechanical parts. and you have to take it weekly for the rest of your life.
- On the other hand, we have the fanatics. lots and lots of fanatics. "Changing your own body is against god's will" they yell. people prefer to die "human" instead of taking a surgery that would save them, turning them into a "machine".
- Groups of human purists resort to terrorism against the pro-augmentations "drug-addicts" and "freaks".
- The setting is quite interesting. but I have to take a point because it isn't very diverse. the whole things turns around one (and one only) central point. Augmentation.
- Story: (1/3)
- The story kicks in pretty quickly so I don't want to spoil anything but I feel it's safe to say that you seen this kind of story before dozen of times.
- I also have to say that for a game that keeps talking about all the different possibilities you have to solve each problem, the story is surprisingly linear, and even the plot twists are predictable.
- Gameplay:
- The game have two main phases and it alternates between them. The free-roaming cities filled with optional quests and exploration and the closed cells filled with enemies where your only objective is to get to the end. From now on I'll be calling the latter dungeons, because what the hell.
- Cites: (5/6)
- The cities are good! although it's more fitting to call them districts. they aren't big enough to be called cities. if you played Vampire, The Masquerade Bloodlines you'll feel right at home.
- there are side quests here and multiple ways to approach any problem. combined with the free roaming this gives you a nice feeling of freedom.
- the only complaint is that the "cities" are small and there is not much to do except for quests. more shopping and maybe a casino or some arena fights could take it to above and beyond.
- In short, what I'm trying to say is that they lack a bit of exploration and a few surprises.
- As for the quests, the variety and quantity drops as you progress with the game, which is unfortunate.
- Can't give it a full score because of those two points, but don't get me wrong. it IS fun!
- Dungeons: (1.5/5)
- Sadly I can't say the same things about those. and there is a lot of those in the game!
- Unlike before you have only two ways to approach each problem. guns blazing or stealth.
- Fans will start to rage now. What do you mean stealth? you can't generalize it as stealth! there are a lot of different things you can do, and more than one of them can be called stealthy!
- Well yes... you can do "stealth" in a few different ways. but you'll be doing the same thing anyway.
- you can use the air ducts or sneak behind guards. you can leave them be or choke them. but the whole experience would just feel the same. reload when spotted.
- each individual dungeon may be fun. I had a blast in the first few. but the whole experience starts to feel the same after that.
- No optional objectives and no way to let your creativity lose. get from point A to B while avoiding or shooting enemies.
- The boss fights are nice. I'll give you that, but there isn't many of them even if you include mini-bosses like giant robots that can be killed with one EMP grenade.
- Graphics: (2/2)
- Great!
- Replayability: (0/1)
- not enough story difference for two playthroughs.
- some might want a second playthrough to try different kind of build. like gun heavy fighter. but you'll probably get to try enough of all the styles by the end of the game unless you'll try to avoid doing so in purpose.
- as for DLC, we have three.
- Tactical Enhancement Pack: silent sniper rifle, lame shotgun and free money. skip this one.
- Explosive Mission Pack: some not-very-useful explosives, Automatic Unlocking Devices (hack-a-machine grenades) and additional mission. this might pimp your intrest, but the only thing this new mission include is another not-so-well-made dungeon. you probably had enough of those by the time you'll get there. better than the first but it's still safe to skip.
- The Missing Link: Haven't played it despite owning it. supposedly story heavy DLC. You don't play with your own character and instead you get a few skill points to build new one. nice if you want to try another build.
- Final Score: (7/10)
- It's a good game. but not a great one. not one that will be remembered for years and spawn a prequel a decade after its release.
- Recommended to fans of stealth and RPGs. specially those who likes the mid ground between the huge open world WRPGs that tend to lack focus the the way too linear JRPGs.
- Specially recommended to those who like Vampire, The Masquerade Bloodlines. you did play it, right?
